This standard presents format and recording requirements for 12.65mm (

31、0.498-in) helical-scan magnetic tape to be used for information inter- change among processing systems, communication systems, and associ- ated equipment. This standard includes a number of new criteria that are the result of expe- riences obtained in high-density recording on magnetic tape. As addi

32、tional experience is gained, improvement in test methods and the need for addi- tional criteria should be expected. This is particularly relevant in the areas of debris generation and mechanical interaction between the magnetic tape and the recording heads. The X3B5 Subcommittee on Digital Magnetic

33、Tape, which developed this standard, consists of experienced and qualified specialists in manufactur- ing magnetic tape, and in recording digital information on magnetic tape. This standard is the fourth to utilize this cartridge form factor. The record- ing format represents a significant advanceme

34、nt in reliability and volumet- ric efficiency for 12.65mm (0.498-in) magnetic tape. In the development of this standard, careful consideration was given to current practices, existing equipment, and supplies, the broadest possible acceptance, and to provid- ing a basis for future improvements in the

35、 use of the cartridge medium. The standard contains specifications for the physical, magnetic, and per- formance properties of the magnetic media, the dimensions and character- istics of the cartridge, and the specifications for a recording and compres- sion format. The text of this standard differs

36、 from the corresponding ECMA standard ECMA-210; however, it is the intent of this standard to be techni- cally the same. There are six annexes in this standard. Annexes A, C, D, and E are informa- tive, and are not considered part of this standard; B and F are normative. Requests for interpretation,

41、AT - a magnetic tape of 12.65 mm (0.498 in) nominal width held inside the cartridge on a single supply reel. The tape shall be transported between the supply reel and a remotely located take-up reel for digital recording at a physical density of 2597 ftpmm (65 974 ftpi). The original design of this

42、HDS tape cartridge has been made using SI units. This standard provides a format, a recording method and a means of increasing the data capacity by the use of a registered data compression algorithm. The use of a labeling standard such as American National Standard for information systems - File str

43、ucture and labeling of magnetic tapes for information interchange, ANSI X3.27-1987, or later editions, will support data interchange between data-processing systems. 1.2 Purpose This standard defines the requirements and supporting test methods necessary to ensure information interchange at acceptab

44、le performance levels. It is distinct from a specification in that it delineates a minimum of restrictions consistent with compatibility in interchange transactions. The performance levels contained in this standard represent the minimum acceptable levels of performance for interchange purposes. The

45、y, therefore, represent the performance levels that the interchange items should meet or surpass during their useful life and thus define end-of-life criteria for interchange purposes. The performance levels in this standard are not intended to be employed as substitutes for purchase specifications.

46、 Wherever feasible, quantitative performance levels that shall be met or exceeded to comply with this standard are given. In all cases, including those in which quantitative limits for requirements falling within the scope of this standard are not stated but left to agreement between the interchange

47、 parties, standard test methods and measurement procedures shall be used to determine such limits. 1.3 Application 1.3.1 Conformance A tape cartridge conforms to this standard if it satisfies all mandatory requirements of all parts of this standard. The tape requirements shall be satisfied throughou

48、t the extent of the tape. 1 ANSI X3.267-l 996 Except as indicated above, the interchange parties complying with the applicable standards should be able to achieve compatibility without the need for additional exchange of technical information. 1.3.2 Dimensions The original dimensions and quantities

49、for all numeric values in this standard are in the international system of units (SI). Conversions of these units to U.S. customary engineering units (similar to British Imperial units) and centimeter-gram-second electromagnetic units (cgs-emu) have been incorporated in accordance with the procedures described in American National Standard Metric practice, ANSI/IEEE 268-1992.
