NOTE: Filling and flooding compounds minimize

、water penetration and assist in isolating fibers from outside environmental concerns. 2 Normative references Test or inspection requirements may include, but are not limited to, the following references. 14、able, refer to the 1 compound Flow test of ASTM D 4565. 1 TIAEIA-455-8 1 -B 3 APPARAT US The following apparatus and equipment is required to perform this test: 3.1 Chamber. A temperature chamber large enough to hold the specimens in a vertical position, with sufficient thermal capacity to maintain

、the specified temperatures for the duration of the test. If the temperature chamber is of a circulating air type, the air shall not blow directly on the test specimens. 3.1.1 For all except U.S. Military applications, the chamber shall be capable of maintaining temperatures I2“c (3.6“F). 3.1.2 For U

、.S. Military applications only, the chamber shall be capable of maintaining temperatures I1 “c (1.8“F). 3.2 Temperature Indicator: Use an appropriate temperature-indicating device: 3.2.1 For all except U.S. Military applications, the temperature indicator shall have an accuracy of +/-2“c (3.6“F). 3.

、2.2 For U.S. Military applications only, the temperature indicator shall have an accuracy of +/-I “c (1.8“F). 3.3 Container. A nonhygroscopic container to catch dripping material. 3.4 necessary, to position the specimen under test. Positioning Devices. Appropriate clamps, supports, and other devices

、, as 3.5 Scale. A scale having an accuracy of at least +/-0.001 gram (0.000035 ounce) and capable of weighing the difference between the empty collection container and the collection container with the allowable quantity of drippings. 4 SAMPLING AND SPECIMENS 4.1 Number and Type of Specimens. Unless

、 otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, prepare five cable specimens for testing from each cable sample to 2 TIAEIA-455-81-B be evaluated. If needed as the result of 5.7, prepare five additional cable specimens for testing. Each cable specimen shall be representative of the cable type spec

、ified by the Detail Specification. 4.2 each specimen shall be 30.0 cm 10.25 cm (1 1.8 in IO.1 in.) in length. Specimen Length. Unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, 4.3 Specimen preparation. Prepare each cable specimen as follows: 4.3.1 Remove a 13.00 cm I 0.25 cm (5.1 in I 0.1 in.

、) section of the outer jacketing material from one end. 4.3.2 Remove all remaining non intrinsic core elements (e.g. armor, shielding, inner jackets, helically applied strength elements, water blocking tapes, other core wraps, etc.) for a length of 8.00 cm 10.25 cm (3.2 in IO.1 in.) from the same ca

、ble end. Do not disturb the remainder of the cable core (e -g -, the final buffer tubes which contain the optical fibers, fillers used for roundness of the core, etc.). 4.3.3 Remove loosely adhered quantities of filling or flooding material disturbed in 4.3.1 or 4.3.2, but assure that the core remai

、ns essentially coated by the filling or flooding material (.e., do not wipe clean) unless permitted or directed to do so by the Detail Specification. 4.3.4 For cable designs containing components, such as fiber bundles or ribbons, which might move under their own weight during the test, secure such

、components at the unprepared end of the specimen in a manner that does not disturb the remainder of the specimen. Such components may be secured by clamps, epoxy plugs, or by other means meeting the intent of this procedure. 4.3.5 When permitted by the Detail Specification, the upper end of the cabl

、e or buffer tubes may be sealed to simulate long length cable sections. 5. PROCEDURE 5.1 Preheat the chamber to the temperature specified in the Detail Specification. For U.S. Military applications only, if not otherwise specified, the test temperature shall be the maximum operating temperature spec

、ified in the Detai I Specification. TIAEIA-455-8 1 -B 5.2 Place each prepared specimen in the oven, suspended in a vertical position with the prepared end down. Measure the mass of a clean collection container and place it directly under, but not contacting, the suspended s peci men . 5.3 as defined

、 in 5.3.1 through 5.3.3; otherwise, continue with 5.4. If permitted by the Detail Specification, preconditioning may be performed 5.3.1 Stabilize the chamber temperature at 23 “c I2 “c (73 OF 13.6 OF) unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, and precondition each specimen for a period

、 of 1 hour, unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification. 5.3.2 At the end of the specified preconditioning time, measure the mass of a second collection container and use it to replace the preconditioning collection container. Measure the mass of the preconditioning collection container t

、o calculate the quantity of filling or flooding compound that may have dripped out of the cable during the preconditioning by subtracting mass found in step 5.2. A calculated quantity greater than the specified preconditioning limit shall constitute a failure. Unless otherwise specified in the Detai

、l Specification, the preconditioning limit shall be the smaller of 0.5% of the total cable specimen weight, or 0.5 gram (0.02 ounce). 5.3.3 Continue testing for 23 hours, unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, and continue with 5.5. 5.4 Detail Specification, test for a period of 24

、hours. Stabilize the chamber temperature and, unless otherwise specified in the 5.5 At the end of the specified time, remove and measure the mass of the collection container to calculate the quantity of filling or flooding compound that may have dripped out of the cable by subtracting the premeasure

Unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, report “No Flow“ for measured quantity changes less than or equal to 0.005 gram (0.0002 ounce). 5.7 Unles

、s otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, all of the cable specimens shall be permitted a maximum flow quantity of 0.050 gram (0.002 ounce). If the flow quantity from one of the five initial cable specimens exceeds 0.050 gram (0.002 ounce), but is less than 0.100 gram (0.0035 ounce), prepar

The test shall be considered successful if none of the second set of specimens have flow quantities, which exceed 0.050 gram (0.002 ounce). 6 CALCULATIONS OR Interpretation OF RESULTS 6.1 from a

The precision of this test has not been determined. No statement can be made about the bias of this test for compound flow (dri
