、TIA-455-86A i FOTP-86 OPTICAL FIBER CABLE JACKET SHRINKAGE Foreword (This Foreword is informative and not part of the Standard.) This Standard is from Project Proposal No. ANSI/TIA-PN-455.86-A, formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR-42.12 Subcommittee on Optical Fibers and Cables. This FOTP f

、orms a part of the latest revision of Recommended Standard TIA-455. NOTE: This FOTP was previously published in EIA Recommended Standard RS-455 as EIA/TIA-455-86. This revision is a fundamental change in the preferred methodology for testing cable jacket shrinkage. The original version of this test

、method was a jacket-only test, generally following ASTM D 4565, clause 14.2. Thus, it was a test of the native shrinkage of the as-extruded jacket material. This revision is a complete cable test, following ICEA S-87-640 and similar U.S. National Standards. This tests the shrinkage characteristics o

、f an entire cable sectionincluding the core, strength members, and other componentswhich usually affect the shrinkage of the outer jacket. The difference in the two versions lies in the definition of the test specimen. The details of the original test procedure are preserved in Annex A for the conve

、nience of users wishing to specify the original test. The revised Scope also refers to IEC 60794-1-22, method F11, for those cases where characterization of jacket shrinkage over time is required. There is one normative Annex. Key words: jacket, shrinkage. ANSI/TIA-455-86A ii This page blank. ANSI/T

、IA-455-86A 1 FOTP-86 OPTICAL FIBER CABLE JACKET SHRINKAGE 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 This method describes a procedure for determining the linear dimensional changes in extruded plastic cable jackets due to exposure at elevated temperatures while in place on a cable. 1.2 The primary use of the test procedur

、e is evaluation of optical fiber cables. Results of this testing can inform decisions of the performance of cables in closures, connectors, or other terminations. Testing of the basic morphological changes in the extruded jacket material, independent of the cable structure, is addressed in Annex A (

、normative) in order to clarify the test procedures. This Annex comprises the test procedure details of the original FOTP-86. 1.3 The intent of this procedure is to determine compliance of a cable specimen at a specified temperature for a specified period of time. Users who desire to characterize the

、 time-response of a cable specimen at elevated temperatures should consider using IEC 60794-1-22, method F11, “Sheath shrinkage (cables intended for patch cords)”. 2 NORMATIVE REFERENCES There are no normative references in this test procedure. 3 APPARATUS The following test equipment is required fo

、r this procedure. Equivalent devices meeting the intent of this procedure may be substituted. 3.1 A mechanical convection oven capable of maintaining a temperature within 1 C, over the range from 70 C to 150 C. 3.2 A linear scale graduated in 0.25 mm (0.01 inch) divisions, 30 cm (12 inches) or more

、in length. 3.3 A temperature measuring device suitable to indicate the temperature over the range for the test temperature used. 3.4 Timer graduated in minutes and capable of timing the range of test intervals used. 3.5 Heavy paper sheets approximately 40 cm x 40 cm (15 x 15 inches) with smooth, wri

、nkle- and crease-free surfaces. ANSI/TIA-455-86A 2 3.6 Talc, fine ground. 4 SAMPLING AND SPECIMENS The test sample shall be a representative sample of the cable being tested. 4.1 Unless otherwise specified, the specimen(s) shall be a whole-cable section, with all components, including the core, in p

、lace. The sections shall be 15 cm (6 in.) long and cut from a cable sample 1.0 meter (39 inches) long immediately prior to the test. Care must be taken to avoid artificially stretching the cable with the method used to cut the short section. 4.2 The specimen shall be marked with reference marks alon

、g the longitudinal axis of the cable. The marks shall be made convenient positions as close as practical to the ends of the specimen. The marks shall not damage the cable jacket. Measure and record the distance (Do) between the reference marks. 4.3 Alternative, if specified, the test specimen shall

、comply with the requirements of Annex A. 5 PROCEDURE 5.1 Unless otherwise specified, the cable sample shall be conditioned for not less than 24 hours at standard ambient conditions prior to specimen preparation. 5.2 Place each specimen on the heavy paper which has been lightly dusted with talc. 5.3

、Place the paper and specimens in the oven at the temperature and for the time period specified in the cable Detail Specification. At the end of the oven exposure period, recondition the specimens at room temperature and humidity for a period of not less than one hour unless it can be shown that shor

、ter times yield equivalent results. 5.4 Measure and record the distance (Df) between the opposite edges of the specimen at the reference marks to the nearest 0.25 mm (0.01 inch). ANSI/TIA-455-86A 3 6 INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS Calculate the linear shrinkage as a percent of the original length. Df - D

、o x 100 = Linear percent change Do Where: Df = final length of specimen in mm (inch) Do = original length of specimen in mm (inch) A negative value indicates shrinkage and a positive value indicates expansion. 7 DOCUMENTATION The test data shall include the following: 7.1 Title of test and date perf

、ormed. 7.2 Identification of the source of specimen, cable, number, or other applicable data. 7.3 Test conditions. 7.4 Equipment used. 7.5 Results of the test in the direction of jacket extrusion and in the transverse direction, if specified. 8 SPECIFICATION INFORMATION The following information sha

、ll be provided in the Detail Specification: 8.1 Type of fiber optic cable to be tested. 8.2 Procedure number (FOTP-86). 8.3 Specimen preparation. 8.3.1 Length of specimen, if other than as specified herein. 8.3.2 If Annex A is used: - Type (slab or section). -Width and thickness of slab. ANSI/TIA-45

、5-86A 4 8.4 Test Conditions - Conditioning - Oven temperature - Exposure time. 8.5 Failure or Acceptance Criteria - Allowable shrinkage - Other requirements. NOTE - Many specifications alloweither through explicit statement or inferenceuse of passing data using the criteria of Annex A to comply with

、 requirements of testing using the whole-cable specimen. ANSI/TIA-455-86A 5 ANNEX A (normative) Test Procedure for Fiber Optic Cable Jacket Shrinkage Jacket-only Specimens The following comprises the test procedure, clause 4, Test Sample, for testing extruded cable jacket independent of the cable st

、ructure. It is taken directly from FOTP-86, as originally published. For references to that revision, the clause 3; the subclauses were numbered 3.1 through 3.4. If specified, this clause is to be used in place of clause 4 of this procedure. A.4 SAMPLING AND SPECIMENS The test sample shall be a repr

、esentative sample of the cable being tested. A.4.1 The test specimen dimensions will depend on the cable jacket diameter and thickness. The method of specimen preparation should be specified in the cable Detail Specification. A.4.2 If not otherwise specified, and if the cable diameter permits, slab

、specimens shall be cut from the jacket 5 cm (2 inches) long by 1.3 cm (0.5 inch) wide. The jacket thickness shall not be reduced in preparation of the slab unless specified in the Detail Specification. A.4.3 Small diameter cable jackets may be cut as a section 15 cm (6 inches) long, or as specified,

、 from a cable sample 1.0 meter (39 inches) long immediately prior to the test. A.4.4 The specimen shall be marked with reference marks in the direction of extrusion. These marks on slab specimens are to be made at the mid-point of the width. Record the distance (Do) between the reference marks. THE
