TIA-604-18 i FOCIS 18 FIBER OPTIC CONNECTOR INTERMATEABILITY STANDARD Type MPO-16 CONTENTS 1 INTRODUCTION 1 2 ADAPTER STANDARD 3 3 PLUG STANDARD 4 4 APPLICATIONS 6 5 ANNEX A 16 TIA-604-18 ii TIA-604-18 1 1 Introduction 1.1 Scope FOCIS 18 presents the intermateability standa

、rd for connectors with the commercial designation of MPO-16 that support 16 fibers per row of fibers, and is used as an addendum to TIA/EIA-604, Fiber Optic Connector Intermateability Standards. The provisions of TIA/EIA-604 apply to this document. 1.2 Objective Intermateability standards define the

、 minimum physical attributes of mating connector components. Fully dimensioned components are not within the scope or intent of FOCIS 18. The requirements of FOCIS 18 have been selected with the objectives of ensuring that any combination of plugs and adapters conforming to the requirements of FOCIS

、 18 will mechanically intermate, and that intermated connector assemblies will meet their common level of performance. The common level of performance of an intermated connector assembly is the least demanding set of performance requirements in the separate performance specifications of each of the

、products in the assembly; see TIA/EIA 604. 1.3 Limitations Realization of the objectives for FOCIS 18 may be limited by the following considerations: 1.3.1 Configuration Options There are configuration options in FOCIS 18 that impose limitations on the combinations of plugs that should be combined i

、n a connector assembly: Both plugs should have the same number of fiber rows, option m; Both plugs should have the same number of fibers per row, option n; Both plugs should have the same alignment pin/hole diameter, option t; Both plugs should have the same angle of contact, option a; Only plugs wi

、th option a = 0 can use adapters with keying option k = 2; Each plug in an assembly should have a different plug interface, option c. 1.3.2 Common Performance The locations of the optical cores, as shown in Figure 3.2.3, are defined, without tolerances, by their true positions. To apply common perfo

、rmance the distribution of the optical cores, as shown in Figure 3.2.3, should be centered on their respective true positions. This standard does not control the intrinsic loss that may occur between fibers in a connector assembly. Intrinsic loss between fibers must be added to the basic connector l

、oss. TIA-604-18 2 1.4 Drawing practices To be in compliance with ANSI and ISO Engineering Drawing Practices, the following shall apply: 1. Where a tolerance of form is not specified, the limits of the dimensions for a feature control the form as well as the size. The combined effects of size and for

、m variations may not exceed the envelope of perfect form at the MMC (maximum material condition). 2. Where interrelated features of size (features shown with a common axis or center plane) have no geometric tolerance of location or runout specified, the limits of the dimensions for a feature control

、 the location tolerance as well as the size. When the interrelated features are at the MMC, they shall be perfectly located to each other as indicated by the drawing. 3. Where perpendicular features (features shown at right angles) have no geometric tolerance or orientation or runout specified, the

、limits of the dimensions for a feature control the orientation tolerance as well as the size. When perpendicular features are at the MMC, they shall be perfectly oriented to each other as indicated by the drawing. 4. As the size of a feature departs from the MMC, variations in form, location and ori

TIA-604-18 3 2 Adapter standard 2.1 Adapter designation The complete designation for a FOCIS 18 connector adapter is: FOCIS 18 A - k - m where: A designates that it is the adapter k defines the keying configuration m defines the mounting configuration 2.2 Adapter requiremen

、ts FOCIS 18 adapters shall meet the requirements of this section. 2.2.1 Adapter interface dimensions The dimensional requirements for FOCIS 18 adapters are defined in Figure 2.2.1. 2.2.2 Adapter keying options Two options have been defined for the adapter keying configuration: k = 1 shown in Figure

、2.2.1 k = 2 shown in Figure 2.2.2 2.2.3 Adapter mounting options The only mounting option specified is m = 0. The mounting features for this option are undefined. TIA-604-18 4 3 Plug standard 3.1 Plug designation The complete designation for a FOCIS 18 connector plug is: FOCIS 18 P m x n - k - a - c

、uirements FOCIS 18 plugs shall meet the requirements of this section. 3.2.1 Plug interface dimensions The dimensional requirements for FOCIS 18 plugs are defined in Figure 3.2.1. Ferrule material shall have a modulus of elasticity of less than 25 GPa. 3.2.2 Ferrule extension and contact force The tr

、avel of the ferrule relative to the plug body and the spring force on the ferrule are defined in Figure 3.2.2. 3.2.3 Number of fiber rows option The two values defined for the number of fiber rows are specified in Table 1. Table 1 Number of Fiber Rows Options Fiber Rows Option Number of Fiber Rows M

、aximum Number of Fibers m = 1 1 16 m = 2 2 32 3.2.4 Number of fibers per row option The one value defined for the number of fibers in a single row is specified in Table 2. For plugs with more than one row of fibers (m1), the number of fibers in the plug is equal to the number of fiber rows (m) times

、 the number of fibers per row (n), or m x n. The fiber configurations are shown in Figures 3.2.3a and 3.2.3b. TIA-604-18 5 Table 2 Number of Fibers per Row Options Fibers per Row Option Number of Fibers per Row n = 16 16 3.2.5 Plug keying option Only a single keying option for FOCIS 18 plugs has bee

、n defined, k = 1. The k=1 option is shown in Figure 3.2.1. 3.2.6 Contact angle option The contact angle is the angle between the plane of contact between mating fibers and a plane perpendicular to the optical axis of the plug. One option has been defined for the contact angle: a = 0, designates an a

、ngle of 0 3.2.7 Plug interface option Two options have been defined for the plug interface: c = 1, to designate a plug interface that contains alignment pins (shown in Figure 3.2.1). c = 2, to designate a plug interface that contains alignment holes. 3.2.8 Alignment pin/hole diameter option Alignmen

、n plugs of two different types. A hybrid adapter between a FOCIS 18 connector and another connector would have the dimensions of Figure 2.2.1 on one side of the centerline or optical plane and the corresponding dimensions of the other type on the other side. 4.2 Receptacles A receptacle provides an

、optical connection to a device such as an optical source or detector. It is in effect half of an adapter. A receptacle for FOCIS 18 plugs shall be designed to intermate with an option c = 2 plug.
