、COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL INTRODUCTION 1 Scope 1.1 These requirements cover portable metal containers that have a nominal capacity of 6 gallons (23 L) or less and that are intended for the temporary outdoor storage and han

、dling of petroleum based ammable and combustible liquids, such as gasoline, naphtha, and kerosene. Such containers are intended for handling and transporting these liquids between a source supply and the point of use. 1.2 A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or s

、ystems new or different from those covered by the requirements in this standard, and that involves a risk of re, electric shock, or injury to persons shall be evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to maintain the acceptable level of

、 safety as originally anticipated by the intent of this standard. A product whose features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conict with specic requirements or provisions of this standard cannot be judged to comply with this standard. Where considered appropriate, revision of requi

、rements shall be proposed and adopted in conformance with the methods employed for development, revision, and implementation of this standard. 2 General 2.1 Units of measurement 2.1.1 If a value for measurement is followed by a value in other units in parentheses, the second unit may be only approxi

、mate. The rst stated value is the requirement. 2.2 Undated references 2.2.1 Any undated reference to a code or standard appearing in the requirements of this standard shall be interpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard. 2.3 Components 2.3.1 Except as indicated in 2.3.2,

、a component of a product covered by this standard shall comply with the requirements for that component. 2.3.2 A component need not comply with a specic requirement that: a) Involves a feature or characteristic not needed in the application of the component in the product covered by this standard, o

、r b) Is superseded by a requirement in this standard. 2.3.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its recognized rating established for the intended conditions of use. 2.3.4 Specic components are recognized as being incomplete in construction features or restrict in performance capabilities.

、Such components are intended for use only under limited conditions, such as certain temperatures not exceeding specied limits, and shall be used only under those specic conditions for which they have been recognized. 30、L NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL 3 Terminology 3.1 Special-purpose containers are divided into the following two categories: a) Consumer Container A container intended for only occasional use, with very limited exposure to corrosive environments. S

、ee 13.2.1. b) Industrial Container A container intended for use in more severe service application than the consumer container with more effective corrosion protection. See 13.1.1 13.1.5. 3.2 In the following text, a requirement that applies only to a particular type of container is so identied by a

、 specic reference in that requirement to the type or types of container involved. Absence of such specic reference or use of the term container indicates that the requirement applies to all special-purpose containers unless indicated otherwise. CONSTRUCTION 4 General 4.1 The total capacity of a cont

、ainer shall be at least 105 percent of the containers nominal capacity. The total capacity of the container is to be measured at the level of the lowest opening while the container is in the intended upright position. 4.2 The nominal capacity of a container shall not be greater than 6 gallons (23 L)

、 and shall be specied as the multiple of 1/4 gallon (1 L) that is immediately below its total capacity, measured as specied in 4.1. Exception: If the total capacity of the container is less than 0.52 gallons (2.0 L), the nominal capacity may be specied as 1 pint (0.5 L), 1 quart (0.95 L), or 3 pints

、 (1.5 L), as appropriate. 4.3 Internal pressure in excess of 5 psig (34 kPa) shall be relieved by overcoming the spring pressure on the pouring- or lling-valve closure, or through an independent pressure-relief device. Exception: A container that complies with the requirement in 17.2 need not comply

、 with this requirement. 4.4 The predominant color of a container intended for the storage and handling of gasoline shall be red and for kerosene shall be medium blue. 37、IBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL 5 Top, Bottom, and Body 5.1 The top, bottom, and body of a container shall be of either: a) Sheet steel provided with a corrosion-resistant coating that complies with the requirements in Corrosion-Resistant Coatings, Section 13, or b) Sheet brass, copper, stainless

、 steel, or other metal that is at least as resistant to corrosion. 5.2 The thickness of base sheet metal shall not be less than the applicable value specied in Table 5.1. Table 5.1 Thickness of sheet metal Nominal capacity Minimum thickness, inch (mm) Steel a Brass or copper 1 gallon (3.8 L) or less

、 0.016 (0.41) 0.014 (0.36) More than 1 gallon b 0.020 (0.51) 0.017 (0.43) a For coated steel, thickness measurements are not to include the coating thickness. b Applies to a container having a total capacity of more than 1.1 gallon (4.2 L), regardless of the nominal capacity of the container. 5.3 Th

、e thickness of the metal is to be determined as the average of ve micrometer readings made at points equally spaced along the edge of the full piece as rolled. Measurements are to be made not less than 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) from a cut edge and not less than 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) from a mill edge. 5.4 The t

、hickness of a drawn part shall not be reduced by more than 12.5 percent from the original thickness of the metal for a container having a nominal capacity of less than or equal to 2-1/2 gallons (9.5 L) and shall not be reduced by more than 5 percent for a container having a nominal capacity of more

、than 2-1/2 gallons. 5.5 The liquid-conning portion of the bottom surface of a container shall be recessed at least 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) above the support surface of the container. Feet, brackets, or the like, used to comply with this requirement shall have mechanical strength and durability equivalent

、to the supporting portion of a container having an extended sidewall. 44、ttom of a container shall be welded, brazed, or lock-seamed. A lock-seamed joint shall be sweated with solder. Exception: A container that performs acceptably in the Drop Test, Section 25, need not have lock seams sweated with solder. 6.2 A formed, circumferential top or bottom seam shall have stren

、gth equivalent to that of a double standing seam. A formed vertical seam shall have strength equivalent to that of an offset hook seam. A formed seam shall have a metal overlap of not less than 1/8 inch (3.2 mm). 7 Gaskets and Seals 7.1 A gasket or seal shall comply with the requirements in the Phys

、ical Property Tests on Gaskets and Seals, Section 21. 8 Closures and Nozzles 8.1 A container shall be provided with a pouring opening and a closure. The pouring opening shall have an integral pouring nozzle or accept an attachable pouring nozzle supplied with the container. The nozzle may be vented

、and the container may be provided with other pouring vents. 8.2 A closure or a exible or rigid pouring nozzle shall be of corrosion-resistant metal or of ferrous metal that is provided with a corrosion-resistant coating that complies with the requirements in Corrosion-Resistant Coatings, Section 13.

、 8.3 A closure shall comply with the Container-Leakage Tests, Section 17, and a nozzle shall comply with the Nozzle-Leakage Test, Section 16. 8.4 Except as noted in 8.9, the wall of a casting shall not be less than 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) thick. The wall of tubing, or other drawn material, shall not be le

、ss than 0.023 inch (0.58 mm) thick. Exception: The wall of tubing or other drawn material may not be less than 0.018 inch (0.46 mm) thick provided the part is rolled. 8.5 The internal diameter of a closure for an opening by which the container is intended to be lled shall not be less than the applicable value specied in Table 8.1.
