SCOPE 1.1 This specification contains the detail requirements for the preparation of oper- ator (6.3.2) manuals (except for aircraf

APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS 2.1 The following documents, of the issue in effect on the date of invitation for bids or request for proposal, form a part of this specification to the extent specified herein. 4、om the procuring activity or as directed by the con- tracting officer.) 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 General. 3.1.1 Sections. Sections specified in the outline herein which are not applicable to the particular item being covered shall be omiwd. 3.1.2 Ref ereming. 3.1.2.1 Paragraph references. Referencing fro

5、m one paragraph to another within the same manual shall be restricted to a related function having general application which must be performed in conjunction with the instructions (ix., cleaning, inspection, test- ing, servicing, etc.). Referencing to tables or figures, however, is permissable. 3.1.

6、2.2 References to other manuals. There shall be no referencing to other pub- lications for operating instructions except when such instructions are in other pocket size operators manuals. 3.1.2.3 Other required references. A 1 1 other references which cannot be included under the provisions of 3.1.2

7、.2 shall be listed in appendix A and shall be limited to those documents required by the operator/crew and which have a recorded distribution to the organization level at which the operator/ crew functions, 3.1.3 Binding. The manual shall be bound. 3.1.4 Fomt. The format shall conform to figure 1. I

The trim size of the manual shall be 4” by 5-3/4”. The manual shall not exceed 1/2” thickness. If the thick- ness o

9、f the manual will exceed 1/2”, separ- ate volumes shall be prepared by one of the following methods as specified by the pro- curing activity: a. Separate volumes for each end item or models of end items. b. Separate volumes for each function- al system of an end item (e.g., communica- tions, armamen

10、t, automotive). c. Separate volumes for each crew member in crew-served weapons providing there is not redundancy of information be- tween volumes, d. Separate volumes by the following breakout: (1) Operating Instructions (2) Maintenance Instructions 3.1.4.2 Page size. Printing area for text and art

11、 material shall not exceed 3-1/8” by 5”. Text shall be single column justified. 3.1.4.3 Type size. The type size for all text shall be a minimum of 8 point and a maximum of 10 point. 3.1.4.4 Numbering. Chapters, sections, paragraphs, appendixes, figures, tables, and pages shall be numbered in accord

12、ance with MILM-38784. An exception to this is that chapters may be placed on either a right or left hand page to avoid blank pages. If a chapter is placed on a left hand page, the page shall be numbered with a zero digit (e,g., 2-0). If a chapter ends on a left hand page and there is sufficient room

13、 to begin a new chapter, the page shall be numbered to include both chapters (e.g., 1-10/2-O). 3.1.5 Uts. A List of Effective Pages, List of Illustrations, and List of Tables shall not be included. 3.1.6 Development of text. All operating and maintenance instructions paragraphs shall be complete and

14、 self supporting except for certain referencing (3.1.2). Sentences shall be short and direct but need not be complete if a clause can convey the meaning adequately. The instructions shall be con- structed so that the operator can perform them by using the manual itself without reference to another m

15、anual or without having to request interpretation from an- other individual. The development of text and style of presentation shall be in a manner most usable by the inexperienced operator/crewman (6.3.1). ”ext may be presented in tabular, pictorial, or narrative format, or any combination thereof.

16、 Use of personal pronouns is encouraged when it is . desirable to address the instruction directly to the operator/crewman. 3.1.7 Illustrations. (See MILM-38784.) When approved by the procuring activity, the use of animated drawings, color print- ing, and other visual techniques are pemit- ted. Anim

17、ated drawings shall not include cartoon characters, Such presentations must serve a functional purpose. 3.1.8 Foldout pages, glossanes, and indexes. Foldout pages, glossaries, and indexes shall not be used. 3.1.9 Warnngs, cautions, and notes. (See MIL-M-38784 and applicable specifications of the MIL

The table of contents shall list numbers and titles of chapters, sections, paragraphs, and appen- dixes (when used) with the page number on which each begins. Layout shall

21、 conform to figure 2 using a single column format. Each volume in a set of manuals shall contain its own table of contents. 3.4 Chapter 1 - Introduction. This chapter shall consist of the following sections (see figure 1). 3.4.1 Section I - General. This section shall consist of the following paragr

22、aphs: 3.4.1.1 Purpose and scope. This para- graph shall contain the following statement: “This manual is for your use in operating and maintaining the (insert name and model of equipment) .” 3.4.18 Maintenance forms and records. Include the statement: “Maintenance forms and records that you are requ

23、ired to use are explained in TM 38-750.” 3.4.1.3 Recommending .improvements. This paragraph shall contain the following state- ment: “You can improve this manual by recommending improvements using DA Form 2028 (Recommended Changes to DA Publications), or a letter, and mail direct to (insert address
