This specification covers one conposition of drawing quality, special killed cold rolled carbon steel strip for the manufacture of small arms ammunition cartridge cases and am

13、le laws and regulations unless a specific exemption has been obtained. 3,l Fabricability, The steel strip shall be capable of being formed into the required cartridge cases when subjected to actual manufacturing operations (see 4.3.11, 3.2 Yype of steel. The steel shall be aluminurn killed (drawing

The chemical composition as determined by product analysis, shall meet the requirements of table I, subject to the tolerances
16、for product analysis as given in FED-STD-66. This product analysis, if required, shall be performed by the producer. 3.3,l.l The aluminuni content, as determined by product analysis, shall be within the range of 0.02 to 0.07 percent unless otherwise agreed upon by the procuring activity and the supp
17、lier. 3.4 Hardness. The maximum hardness of the steel strip shall be Hockwell B70. 3.5 Condition. The steel shall be furnished in the spheroidized annealed, cold rolled No. 4 skin rolled temper, The steel shall show uniforni carbide distribution at a magnification of LOOX, and small carbide spheroid
18、s, uniformly distributed at a magnification of 1OOOX. . 3.6 Austenite qrain size. The austenite grain size of the steel shall be No. 5 or finer. The grain size requirement shall be met if seventy percent of the grains are No. 5 or finer. 3.7 Soundness. The standards for soundness shall be as specifi
19、ed by the procuring activity or as agreed upon between the procuring activity and the s uppl ie r . 3.8 Finish. The strip shall be furnished with a No. 1 finish (dull finish). 3.9 Dimensions and tolerances. Cold rolled Carbon steel strip shall be furnished in accordance with the dimensions specified
20、 in the contract or order. Tolerances shall be in accordance with the applicable tolerances shown in FED-STD-48. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or order, the strip material shall be furnished with a No. 3 edge slit but shall not be filed. 3.10 Identification narkinq. Identification marki
21、ng of strip in coils or cut lengths shall be as specified in the contract or order, 3.11 Workmanship. The strip material shall be clean and free of injurious imperfections such as laminations, segregation, pipe, surface defects, and other defects which might detrimentally affect the material for the
22、 intended use. 4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS 4.1 Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor is respmsible for the performance of all inspection requirements as specif ied herein. 24、orth in the cpecif ication where such inspections are deerned necessary to assure supplies and services conf orn to prescribed requirements, 4,1,l Responsibility for compliance, All itens must meet all requirements of sections 3 and 5, The inspection set forth in this specification shall becoae a pa
25、rt of the contractors overall inspection system or quality program, The absence of any inspection requirements in the specification shall not relieve the contractor of the responsibility of assuring that all products or supplies submitted to the Government for acceptance comply with a11 requirements
26、 of the contract, Sampling in quality conformance does not authorize submission of known efective material, either indicated or actual, nor does it commit the Government to acceptance of defective material. 4,2 Lot, A lot shall consist of all strip of the same heat, same thickness For purposes of an
27、alysis of chemical composition and width, subjected to the same annealing procedure, and submitted for inspection at the same time, and deteraination of austenite grain size, a lot is defined as one heat, 4,3 Sampling, 4.3,l Pa.bricability, A sufficient sample of strip shall be taken from each lot:
28、to manufacture a minimum of 4000 cups, 4*3,2 c lier ni cal composition, One sample shall be taken from each heat for chernical analysis , 4,3,3 Harness, Three samples shall be taken rom each lot for hardness test i ng , 4,3*4 Condition. One sample shall be taken from each lot for microscopic exanina
29、tion for compliance with 3,5, 4,3,5 Austenite grain size, One sample shall be taken for each heat for austenite grain size determination. 4.3,6 Soundness, The number of samples required for testing for soundness requirements shall be as specified by the procuring activity or as agreed upon between t
30、he procuring activity and the supplier, 4.4 Examination, 4.4,l Visual, A representative sampling of the steel in each lot shall be examined for conformance with the requirements for finish (see 3-81? identification marking (see 3,10), and workmanship (see 3,111, Comparison of the workmanship shall b
31、e made with the standards established as in 3.11. 4.4,2 Dimensions and tolerances, Not less than 5 percent of the coils or cut lengths from each lot shall be measured or conformance with the dimension anil tolerance requirements (see 3.91, Thickness neasurements shall be made with a micrometer at a

33、d by the procuring agency (see 6-21 and where there is evidence that indicates that the specimen was not representative of the lot of Inaterial, and when the detail specification does not otherwise specify, at least two specimens shall be selected to replace each test specimen which failed. All spec
34、imens so selected for retest shall meet the requirements of the specification or the lot shall be subject to rejection. 4,4.3 Preparation for delivery. Prior to shipment, examination shall be made for conformance with the requirements of section 5, 4.5 Tests, 4.5.1 Fabricability. The 4000 cups shall
35、 be subjected to all the operations in the manufacture of the applicable cartridge case or the specified strip. Cartridges assembled from the cases shall be subjected to the firing tests of the applicable cartridge case specif ications and examined for defects, 4.5.2 Chemical composition. Samples fo
36、r chemical analysis shall be prepared and tested in accordance with ASTPI A751. 4.5,3 Hardness. Sampes for hardness tests shall be prepared and tested in accordance with ASTI.1 E18, Hardness readings shall be taken at both ends and at the center of the specimen; at least three readings shall be take
37、n at each position, 4.5.4 Condition, The sample shall be polished and suitably etched and shall be examined under a magnification of 1OOX for uniformity of carbide distribution and at 1OOOX for uniform distribution of small carbide spheroids. 4.5.5 Austenite grain size, Samples for austenite grain s
38、ize shall be prepared an tested in accordance with ASTE1 112, 4,5.6 soundness. Soundness test samples shall be prepare and tested as specified by the procuring activity or as agreed upon between the procuring activity and the supplier, 4.6 Rejection and retest. 4-6.1 Rejection. Unless otherwise spec
39、ified (see 6-21 where one or i1iore test specimens fail to meet the requirements of the specification the lot represented by the specimen or specimens shall be subject to rejection, 5. PACKAGING 5.1 Preservation and packaging, Preservation and packaginy shall be level A or C as specified (see 6,2).
40、5,l.l Level A. For military requirements, preservation for shipment shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-163, 5.1-2 Level C. 42、er for the node of transportation employed, 5.3 Ilarking, In addition to any special marking required by the contract or order, marking for shipment shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-129. 6,l Intended use, Cold rolled carbon steel strip covered by this specification is intended for use in the manu
