、m and mixed with other materials. 1.2 The requirements specified in clauses 3 and 4 apply primarily to long-term storage (generally exceeding 6 months). For short-term storage (not exceeding 6 months), for example in production and distribution warehouses with continuous flow of materiais, this stan

、dard applies analogously with the exception of the general requirements relating to the warehouse given in clause 3 and paragraph 3.1, provided that the appearance and the properties of the rubber products are not adversely affected. 2 General The majority of rubber products show signs of deteriorat

、ion in their physical properties when stored in unsuitable conditions or when handled in a manner which does not comply with the accepted practice. This may result in a reduction of their service life and they may become unuseable, e.g. through excessive hardening, softening, permanent deformation,

、as well as flaking, cracking or other surface defects. The deterioration may be caused by oxygen, ozone, heat, light, humidity, solvents or by storage under stress. Suitably stored and handled rubber products remain practically unchanged over a long period (several years) as far as their properties

、are concerned. 3 Storage warehouse The storage warehouse shall be cool, dry, dust-free and moderately ventilated. A weather protected storage in the open is not permitted. 3.1 Temperature The storage temperature of the rubber products depends on the product to be stored and the rubber base used. Rub

、ber products shall not be stored below O OC or above +20 OC. Higher and lower temperatures are permissible for short periods only. Rubber products exposed to lower temperatures during storage and in transit may stiffen. These rubber products shall be conditioned at temperatures of +20 OC or above fo

、r an adequate period before installation or subsequent treatment. To avoid moisture condensing on the rubber product it should remain packed. 3.2 Heating When stored in heated warehouses rubber products shall be protected from the source of heat. The distance between heating source and product shall

、 be at least 1 m. HZLF (ID13 .F/Q/B) Page 4 prEN 275 1 : 1996 3.3 Humidity Storage in damp warehouses shall be avoided. Care shall be taken to avoid condensation. A relative humidity of less than 70 % is most favorable, which should, however, not fall below 45 %. 3.4 Light Rubber products shall be p

、rotected from light, in particular from direct exposure to sunlight and strong artificial light containing a high proportion of ultra violet radiation. For this reason, warehouse windows shall be provided with a red or orange (definitely not blue) protective coat. 3.5 Oxygen and ozone Rubber product

、s shall be protected against air circulation by storage in air-tight containers or by some other suitable means. Since ozone is particularly deleterious, warehouses shall not contain any stationary equipment producing ozone, such as electric motors or other equipment which may produce sparks or elec

、tric discharges. Combustion gases and vapours which, as a result of photo-chemical processes, may lead to the formation of ozone, shall be avoided. 3.6 Miscellaneous Solvents, fuels, lubricants, chemicals, acids, disinfectants, sealing compounds, etc. shall not be stored together with rubber product

、s in the same warehouse. 4 Storage and handling 4.1 General Care shall be taken that products are stored in a stress-free condition, .e. without tension, pressure, or other deformation since stress may cause permanent deformation as well as the formation or cracks. Non-ferrous metals, especially cop

、per and manganese, have an adverse effect on rubber products. Therefore, rubber products shall not be stored in contact with non-ferrous metals, but protected by packing or coating with a suitable material e.g. anti-static films, paper, polyethylene or polyamide bags. Plasticized films shall not be

、used for packaging. If rubber products are powdered, the powder shall not contain any ingredients adversely affecting the rubber products. Materials suitable for powdering are French chalk, prepared chalk, fine grain mica powder and rice starch. Contact between vulcanized products of different compo

、sitions shall be avoided. Rubber products shall be stored for as short a period as possible. Rubber products shall be issued on the basis of the first in first out. 4.2 Tyres Tyres shall be stored in warehouses as per clause 3 according to paragraphs 4.2.1 and 4.2.2. H 2 LF D13. FIQIB) i Page 5 prEN

、 2751 : 1996 4.2.1 For long periods of storage tyres shall be stored vertically, in one layer, on racks, at least 1 O cm from the ground. To avoid deformation, tyres should be rotated once per month. 4.2.2 For short-term storage (not exceeding 4 weeks) tyres shall be stacked horizontally one above t

、he other on wooden slats, the stacks not exceeding 1,20 m in height. For storage longer than 4 weeks, restacking is necessary. 4.3 Flexible containers 4.3.1 Storage Flexible containers made of rubber coated fabric shall only be stored in their original or an identical packing. For this purpose, the

、metal flanges shall be sealed with a suitable adhesive paper. The container shall be loosely folded in a tubular polyethylene film which shall be heat-sealed at both ends. External packaging shall be a solid cardboard box of adequate size and thickness. Boxes of flexible containers may only be stack

、ed to a height such that no package below is damaged. The bearing surface of the cardboard boxes shall be smooth and free from sharp edges. Containers shall be issued on the basis of the first in first out (see packaging date on the cardboard box). Flexible containers having contained fuel shall be

、preserved before storing, however 1 O days after emptying at the latest. Preservation shall be performed by coating or spraying the entire internal surface of the containers with light engine oil. 4.3.2 Handling Flexible containers shall only be transported in their packages on suitable vehicles. Th

、e packages shall not be dropped or thrown. After removal from their packaging, the flexible containers shall be checked for damage. The containers shall not be lifted or moved using the metal flanges. The tools and supports used shall be free from sharp edges. When handling the containers, ambient t

、emperature shall be at least 1 O OC. 4.4 Storage of other rubber products Sheets and strips may be stored either flat or in rolls; when stored flat the whole of their surface shall be supported. Rubber coated fabrics shall be hung, coiled on rollers. Cables and cords shall be stored in coils (but no

、t stacked one upon the other), or hung coiled on rollers or reels. Drive belts shall never be stored on edge (risk of buckling) but as far as possible be hung in rolls from a spindle. During long term storage the roll shall be rotated from time to time to prevent the internal pressure from permanent

、ly acting in one direction. V-belts may be stored flat. If, for reason of space, they are hung, then the diameter of the spindle should be at least ten times the height of the section of the belt. Flexible tubes shall be stored in coils or extended. 5 Cleaning and maintenance If necessary, rubber pr

、oducts may be cleaned with neutral soap and warm water. Moreover, the rubber products may be cleaned in a 1,5 % solution of sodium carbonate or detergents recommended by the manufacturer. Residues of cleaning solution shall be removed by rinsing in water. The cleaned products shall be allowed to dry at ambient temperature. Page 6 prEN 275 1 : 1996 Solvents, such as trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride and hydrocarbons shall not be used for cleaning. Additionally, objects with sharp edges, wire brushes or abrasive paper, etc. shall not be used. HZLF DI3.FIQIB)
