COCOA, Fla.-They practice what they preach at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) which opened in September at the Univer- sity of Central Florida/Brevard Community College campus. The $7 million complex includes the New Energy Center, a 3

13、4,OCGsquare-foot building which is one of the more energy-effcient buildings in Florida, a state noted for its hot, humid climate The building is part of a 71,000-ft2 (65% m2) complex which also includes a visitors center and laboratory building. The complex is the site for much of the states energy

14、 research. part of the research is the New Energy Center itself. This building is projected to use two-thirds less energy than any comparably sized office building that meets Florida energy codes. “We analyzed every energy-related aspect of the building using the most authoritative computer modellin

15、g program available said FSEC Director Dr. David Block. Architects Design Group of Orlando designed the narrow office building with an axis that runs east and west. All offices receive natural light for interior illumination. In addition, ali daylit rooms are equipped with controls that dim electric

16、al lights when sunlight is available and brighten them at night and when clouds obscure the sun. Motion sensors turn off lights when spaces are unoccupied. High Corporation and has Trane high-effici- ency air-conditioning and ventilation systems. “We need to bring in outside air to ke

Philip Fairey, FSEC deputy director, said that much of the energy performance can be attributed to common sense. For example, the white roof membrane reflects 80% of the suns heat. Also, the building is a long rec

20、tangie, rather than a cube, which reduces the time the buildings walls and windows are exposed to direct solar radiation. Complementing the shape are energy-reducing design features. “Windows on the long south-facing waU are protected by exterior shades during spring, summer and fa. Only in winter a

48、duate engineer, I have a unique per- spective on the industry. I have 15 years experience as a licensed sheet metal worker fabricating and installing ductwork and packaged equipment. After reading “Duct Design Fundamentals: (April 1995 ASHRAE Journa0 by Patrick J. Brooks, P.E., I have some comments.

49、 Similar to the December 1993 article, “Achieving a Quiet Roof Top Installation: by Robert G. Harold, P.E., Brooks uses what appears to be round mitred elbows complete with turning vanes. The 90- degree mitred elbow is not in common use and while I do not like to use the term impossible, the installation of turning vanes in a round fitting as shown is time-consuming to the extent that the vanes would not be installed. I have only seen this fitting on a print once and the vanes were omitted in the installation. If the designer really wants vanes in
