Scope1.1 This specification covers tungsten-type andmolybdenum-type high

Classification3.1 Material in accordance with this specification is classi-fied by chemical composition. Types correspond to respectiveAIS

9、I designations.3.1.1 Types T1, T2, T4, T5, T6, T8, and T15 are character-ized by a controlled high tungsten content along with otheralloying elements.3.1.2 Types M1, M2, M3, M4, M6, M7, M10, M30, M33,M34, M36, M41, M42, M43, M44, M46, M47, M48, and M62are characterized by a controlled high molybdenu

10、m contentalong with other alloying elements.3.1.3 Types M2, M3, and M10 are further classified accord-ing to carbon range. Type M3 is further classified according tovanadium range.3.1.4 Types M50 and M52 are considered intermediate highspeed steels in view of their lower total alloy content than the

Materials and Manufacture5.1 Unless

17、otherwise specified, material covered by thisspecification shall be made by an electric melting process.6. Chemical Composition6.1 An analysis of each heat of steel shall be made by themanufacturer to determine the percentage of the elementsspecified and these values shall conform to the requirement

18、s asto chemical composition specified in Table 1. If requested orrequired, the chemical composition shall be reported to thepurchaser or his representative.6.2 Analysis may be made by the purchaser from finishedbars and forgings by machining off the entire cross section anddrilling parallel to the a

19、xis of the bar or forging at any pointmidway between the center and surface in accordance with thelatest issue of Method E59. The chemical analysis of thedrilling chips shall be made in accordance with the latest issueof Methods E30. The chemical composition thus determinedshall not vary from the li

20、mits specified in Table 1.7. Hardness Requirements7.1 Annealed hardness values when obtained in accordancewith the latest issue of Test Methods and Definitions A370shall not exceed the Brinell hardness values (or equivalentRockwell hardness values) specified in Table 2.7.2 Specimens for determinatio

21、n of minimum response tohardening shall be14-in. (6.4-mm) thick disks cut so as torepresent either the full cross-sectional area or that midwaybetween the center and outer surface of the material. If thematerial form or size does not lend itself to accurate hardnessdetermination on14-in. thick cross

22、-sectional disks, then longi-tudinal specimens may be used for hardness testing. Examplesare round bars less than12 in. (12.7 mm) in diameter; sheet;and strip. The specimens shall be heat treated intwo furnaces, one operating as a preheat furnace and the otheras a high-heat furna

36、ce. The furnaces may be either controlledatmosphere or molten-salt bath. The austenitizing temperatureranges stipulated in Table 3 cover both furnace types.7.2.1 After being austenitized for the proper time, thesamples may be oil quenched or quenched in molten salt plusair cooling. When a salt quenc

37、h is employed, its temperatureshall be 1050 to 1175F (566 to 635C) except for M3, M4,M41, , M42,M43 , M46, M47, M48, M62, and T15, when itshall be 1000 to 1075F (538 to 579C). All samples shall bedouble tempered at 1025F (552C) for 2 h each cycle exceptfor M0 and M52 which shall be given two temperi

38、ng cycles of2 h each at 1000F and M41, M42, M43, M44, M46, M47,M48, M62, and T15, which shall be given three temperingcycles of 2 h each at 1000F.7.2.2 The hardness of the specimen after the specified heattreatment shall meet the minimum hardness value for theparticular type of steel shown in Table

39、3. Rockwell C testsshould be used where possible but light-load tests may benecessary on thin specimens. These tests should be specified byagreement between seller and purchaser. The hardness valueshall be obtained in accordance with the latest issue of TestMethods and Definitions A370 and shall be

40、the average of atleast five readings taken in an area midway between the centerand surface of the largest dimension of the cross-sectionalspecimen or along the parallel surfaces of the longitudinalspecimen. The surface to be tested shall be ground sufficientlyto remove any surface condition, scale,

41、carburization, ordecarburization which might affect readings.8. Macrostructure8.1 The macrostructure of a specimen representing theentire cross-sectional area in the annealed condition andprepared in accordance with the latest issue of Practice A561shall exhibit a structure free of excessive porosit

42、y, slag, dirt, orother nonmetallic inclusions, pipes, checks, cracks and otherinjurious defects.8.2 Macroetch severity levels for center porosity and ingotpattern, illustrated photographically in Practice A561, shall notexceed the ratings specified in Table 4 for the appropriatematerial size and com

43、position.9. Decarburization9.1 Decarburization shall be determined on a specimenrepresenting a cross section of the material and prepared inaccordance with the latest issue of Methods E3. When exam-ined at 203 or greater magnification, it shall not exceed thevalues given in Tables 5-8 for the approp

44、riate size and shape ofthe material.9.2 Material ordered as drill rod, ground and polished,centerless ground, ground finished, or machine finished flatsand squares shall be free of scale and decarburization.10. Permissible Variations in Dimensions10.1 Permissible variations in dimensions shall not e

45、xceedthe applicable limits stated in Tables 8-22, incl. Where out-of-round or square requirements are shown, they shall be deter-mined as follows:10.1.1 Out-of-RoundDifference between high and lowreadings as determined by micrometers or other suitablemeasuring instruments.10.1.2 Out-of-SquareThe amo

46、unt required to be removedfrom each edge in order to square the edge with the face asdetermined with a square and suitable measuring instruments.11. Workmanship, Finish, and Appearance11.1 High-speed tool steel shall be free of heavy scale, deeppitting, laps, porosity, injurious segregations, excess

47、ive non-metallic inclusions, seams, cracks, checks, slivers, scale marks,dents, soft and hard spots, pipes, or any defects that woulddetrimentally affect the suitability of the material, after re-moval of the recommended stock allowance. (See Tables 5-8)11.2 Visual examination shall be made to ensur

48、e compliancewith the requirements for workmanship, finish, dimensions andtolerances, identification marking, and packaging.12. Sampling12.1 Unless otherwise specified, a lot shall consist of allmaterial submitted for inspection at the same time, of the sameheat, type, finish, and size, and must conf

49、orm to the provisionsof this specification.13. Inspection13.1 Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchaseorder, the supplier is responsible for the performance of allinspection requirements as specified herein.
