Materials and Manufacture5.1 Unless otherwise specified, material covered by thisspecification shall be made by an electric melting process.6. Chemical Composition6.1 An analysis of each heat of steel shall be made by themanufactu
18、rer to determine the percentage of the elementsspecified and these values shall conform to the requirements asto chemical composition specified in Table 1. If requested orrequired, the chemical composition shall be reported to thepurchaser or his representative.6.2 Analysis may be made by the purcha
19、ser from finishedbars and forgings by machining off the entire cross section anddrilling parallel to the axis of the bar or forging at any pointmidway between the center and surface in accordance with thelatest issue of Practice E59. The chemical analysis of thedrilling chips shall be made in accord
20、ance with the latest issueof Test Methods E30. The chemical composition thus deter-mined shall not vary from the limits specified in Table 1.7. Hardness Requirements7.1 Annealed hardness values when obtained in accordancewith the latest issue of Test Methods and Definitions A370shall not exceed the
21、Brinell hardness values (or equivalentRockwell hardness values) specified in Table 2.7.2 Specimens for determination of minimum response tohardening shall be14-in. 35、onal disks, then longi-tudinal specimens may be used for hardness testing. Examplesare round bars less than12 in. (12.7 mm) in diameter; sheet;and strip. In this case, the specimen shall be a minimum of 3 in.(76.2 mm) in length, and parallel flats shall be ground on theoriginal mill surfaces. The sp
36、ecimens shall be heat treated intwo furnaces, one operating as a preheat furnace and the otheras a high-heat furnace. The furnaces may be either controlledatmosphere or molten-salt bath. The austenitizing temperatureranges stipulated in Table 3 cover both furnace types.7.2.1 After being austenitized
37、 for the proper time, thesamples may be oil quenched or quenched in molten salt plusair cooling. When a salt quench is employed, its temperatureshall be 1050 to 1175F (566 to 635C) except for M3, M4,M41, M42, M43, M46, M47, M48, M62, and T15, when itshall be 1000 to 1075F (538 to 579C). All samples
38、shall bedouble tempered at 1025F (552C) for 2 h each cycle exceptfor M0 and M52 which shall be given two tempering cycles of2 h each at 1000F and M41, M42, M43, M44, M46, M47,M48, M62, and T15, which shall be given three temperingcycles of 2 h each at 1000F.7.2.2 The hardness of the specimen after t
39、he specified heattreatment shall meet the minimum hardness value for theparticular type of steel shown in Table 3. Rockwell C testsshould be used where possible but light-load tests may benecessary on thin specimens. These tests should be specified byagreement between seller and purchaser. The hardn
40、ess valueshall be obtained in accordance with the latest issue of TestMethods and Definitions A370 and shall be the average of atleast five readings taken in an area midway between the centerand surface of the largest dimension of the cross-sectionalspecimen or along the parallel surfaces of the lon
41、gitudinalspecimen. The surface to be tested shall be ground sufficientlyto remove any surface condition, scale, carburization, ordecarburization which might affect readings.8. Macrostructure8.1 The macrostructure of a specimen representing theentire cross-sectional area in the annealed condition and
42、prepared in accordance with the latest issue of Practice A561shall exhibit a structure free of excessive porosity, slag, dirt, orother nonmetallic inclusions, pipes, checks, cracks and otherinjurious defects.8.2 Macroetch severity levels for center porosity and ingotpattern, illustrated photographic
43、ally in Practice A561, shall notexceed the ratings specified in Table 4 for the appropriatematerial size and composition.9. Decarburization9.1 Decarburization shall be determined on a specimenrepresenting a cross section of the material and prepared inaccordance with the latest issue of Guide E3. Wh
44、en examinedat 20 or greater magnification, it shall not exceed the valuesgiven in Tables 5-8 for the appropriate size and shape of thematerial.9.2 Material ordered as drill rod, ground and polished,centerless ground, ground finished, or machine finished flatsand squares shall be free of scale and de
45、carburization.10. Permissible Variations in Dimensions10.1 Permissible variations in dimensions shall not exceedthe applicable limits stated in Tables 8-22, incl. Where out-of-round or square requirements are shown, they shall be deter-mined as follows:10.1.1 Out-of-RoundDifference between high and
46、lowreadings as determined by micrometers or other suitablemeasuring instruments.10.1.2 Out-of-SquareThe amount required to be removedfrom each edge in order to square the edge with the face asdetermined with a square and suitable measuring instruments.11. Workmanship, Finish, and Appearance11.1 High
47、-speed tool steel shall be free of heavy scale, deeppitting, laps, porosity, injurious segregations, excessive non-metallic inclusions, seams, cracks, checks, slivers, scale marks,dents, soft and hard spots, pipes, or any defects that woulddetrimentally affect the suitability of the material, after
48、re-moval of the recommended stock allowance. (See Tables 5-8.)11.2 Visual examination shall be made to ensure compliancewith the requirements for workmanship, finish, dimensions andtolerances, identification marking, and packaging.12. Sampling12.1 Unless otherwise specified, a lot shall consist of a
