、Treatment6.1 Electrolytic tin plate as produced without a surfacechemical treatment is subject to tin oxide growth that ismanifested by surface discoloration during storage and subse-quent baking operations and may adversely affect applicationand adhesion of organic coatings and lithography, and may

、cause poor solderability. A chemical treatment is thereforeapplied in most cases after the tin coating has been depositedand immediately preceding the oiling, to control tin oxideformation and growth. The chemical treatment is applied bypassing the strip through a chemical solution with or withoutFI

、G. 1 Standard Heavy Side Marking System for Differential Electrolytic Tin PlateA 624/A 624M 033current. Chemical treatments on electrolytic tin plate areapplied commensurate with each suppliers method and equip-ment; however, one of the controlling factors is the amount ofcombined chromium present o

、n the surface. Unless otherwisespecified, the surface chemical treatment will be left to thediscretion of the tin plate producer.6.2 In order of decreasing surface passivation, the com-monly used chemical treatments for tin plate are as follows:6.2.1 Cathodic Sodium Dichromate (CDC) Treatment:6.2.1.

、1 The cathodic sodium dichromate treatment is themost widely used treatment, and provides a highly passivatedsurface against the formation of tin oxides. It has the followingattributes: (1) minimum tin oxide growth after prolongedstorage; (2) minimized discoloration during subsequent bakingrequired

、for organic coatings and lithography; (3) minimizeddiscoloration due to soldering operation; and (4) provides someresistance to tin sulfide discoloration of certain sulfur-bearingfood products.FIG. 2 Standard Light Side Marking System for Differential Electrolytic Tin PlateA 624/A 624M 0346.2.1.2 Ca

、thodic sodium dichromate-treated tin plate has anaim range of 350 to 650 g of chromium per square foot ofsurface. 4000 to 7000 g of chromium per square metre ofsurface.6.2.2 Sodium Dichromate Dip (SDCD/SDD) Treatment:6.2.2.1 The sodium dichromate dip treatment provides mod-erate passivation against

、tin oxide formation.6.2.2.2 Sodium dichromate dip-treated tin plate has a maxi-mum of 200 g of chromium per square foot of surface. 2200g of chromium per square metre of surface.7. Oiling7.1 Electrolytic tin plate is furnished with an oil film appliedto both surfaces. The most commonly used oil films are dioctylsebacate (DOS) and acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC). Other oilfilms may be used. Surface act
