Scope*1.1 This specification covers high-strength low-alloy struc-tu

3、ral steel shapes in Grades 50 345, 60 415, 65 450 and 70485, produced by the quenching and self-tempering process(QST). The shapes are intended for riveted, bolted or weldedconstruction of bridges, buildings and other structures.1.2 The QST process consists of in line heat treatment andcooling rate

4、controls which result in mechanical properties inthe finished condition that are equivalent to those attainedusing heat treating processes which entail reheating afterrolling. A description of the QST process is given in AppendixX1.1.3 Due to the inherent characteristics of the QST process,the shape

5、s shall not be formed and post weld heat treated attemperatures exceeding 1100F 600C.1.4 When the steel is to be welded, it is presupposed that awelding procedure suitable for the grade of steel and intendeduse or service will be utilized. See Appendix X3 of Specifica-tion A6/A6M for information on

6、weldability.1.5 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, theSI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in eachsystem are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system mustbe used independently of the other. Combining v

General Requirements for Delivery3.1 Material furnished under this specification shall con-form to the applicable requirements of the current edition ofSpecification A6/A6M.4. Ma

9、terials and Manufacture4.1 The shapes shall be produced by the quenching andself-tempering process (QST). Following rapid quenching toachieve a surface temperature below the martensite starttemperature, Ms, the shapes shall be allowed to auto-temper toa self-tempering temperature (STT) that shall be

10、 1100F595C minimum and 1300F 705C maximum. The STTshall be reported on the mill test report.4.2 For grades 60 415, 65 450, and 70 485, therequirements for fine austenitic grain size in SpecificationA6/A6M shall be met.5. Chemical Composition5.1 The chemical analysis of the heat shall conform to ther

11、equirements prescribed in Table 1.5.2 The steel shall conform on product analysis to therequirements prescribed in Table 1 subject to the productanalysis tolerances in Specification A6/A6M.6. Mechanical Properties6.1 Tensile PropertiesThe material as represented by thetest specimens shall conform to

12、 the tensile properties given inTable 2.6.2 Charpy V-notch tests shall be made in accordance withSpecification A673/A673M, Frequency H:6.2.1 The test results of full-size specimens shall meet anaverage value of 40 ft-lbf 54 J at 70F 21C.6.2.1.1 Test reports for every heat supplied are required.6.2.2

QUENCHING AND SELF-TEMPERING PROCESS (QST)X1.1 IntroductionThe quenching and self-temperingprocess, commonly referred to as “QST,” has evolved

30、from the“thermo-mechanical control processes” (TMCP) that havebeen known and used for a number of years. QST, which is avariation of TMCP, produces fine-grained steel by a combina-tion of chemical composition and integrated controls of manu-facturing processes from ingot or bloom reheating to in-lin

31、einterrupted quenching and self-tempering, thereby achievingthe specified mechanical properties in the required productthicknesses.X1.2 Outline of QSTGiven in Fig. X1.1.X1.2.1 Quenching and Self-Tempering (QST) steels of finegrain size are manufactured by producing tempered martensiteand varying the

32、 pearlite or bainite, or both. This is accom-plished through interrupted water quenching in which theduration of the quench is controlled after the final reductionpass while still in the temperature region above the Ar3. Rapidquenching is continued until the maximum surface temperatureof the steel i
