、Designation: A 955/A 955M 09Standard Specification forDeformed and Plain Stainless-Steel Bars for ConcreteReinforcement1This standard is issued under the fixed designationA 955/A 955M; the number immediately following the designation indicates the yearof original adoption or, in the case of revision
、, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope*1.1 This specification covers deformed and plain stainless-steel bars for concrete reinforcement used in ap
、plicationsrequiring resistance to corrosion or controlled magnetic per-meability. The standard sizes and dimensions of deformed barsand their numerical designation shall be those listed in Table 1.The text of this specification references notes and footnoteswhich provide explanatory material. These
、notes and footnotes(excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be consideredas requirements of the specification.1.1.1 Supplementary requirement (S1) of an optional natureis provided. It shall apply only when specified by the purchaser. In order to obtain a controlled magnetic permeability prod
、uct, steel conforming to Supplementary Requirement S1 should beordered.1.2 The chemical composition of the stainless steel alloyshall be selected for suitability to the application involved byagreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser. This isan important consideration in achieving the desi
、red corrosionresistance or controlled magnetic permeability, or both, be-cause these properties are not provided by all stainless steels.NOTE 1The alloys shown in Table 2 have found the most use in NorthAmerica. Other alloys may also provide desired properties; consult withthe manufacturer for stain
、less steel alloy properties and availability.1.3 Bars are of three minimum yield strength levels, namely,40 000 280 MPa, 60 000 420 MPa, and 75 000 psi 520MPa, designated as Grade 40 280, Grade 60 420, andGrade 75 520, respectively.1.4 Plain rounds in sizes up to and including 2 in. 50.8 mmin diamet
、er, when specified for dowels, spirals, structural ties, and supports, shall be furnished under this specification inGrade 40 280, Grade 60 420, and Grade 75 520, respec-tively. Bending properties, when required, shall be by agree-ment between the manufacturer and purchaser. Requirementsproviding for
、 deformations and marking shall not be applicableto plain bars.1.5 Weldability of most stainless steel compositions isgenerally good, however, pre-weld or post-weld procedures, orboth, are necessary. Where material is to be welded, a weldingprocedure suitable for the chemical composition and intende
、duse or service shall be used. Retesting of physical propertiesshould be considered following welding procedures dependingupon the steel composition and welding operation involved.NOTE 2It is recommended that the user consult the manufacturer forinformation available from the Nickel Development Inst
、itute (NIDI)(Toronto, Canada).1.6 This specification is applicable for orders in eitherinch-pound units (as Specification A 955) or in SI units (asSpecification A 955M).1.7 The values stated in either inch-pound or SI units are tobe regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI unitsare s
、hown in brackets. The values stated in each system are notexact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used inde-pendently of the other. Combining values from the two systemsmay result in nonconformance with the standard.1.8 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,
、if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Materials and Manufacture5.1 The bars
、shall be rolled from properly identified heats ofmold or strand cast steel.5.2 Bars shall be furnished in one of the following heattreatment conditions, as shown in Specification A 276, and asneeded to meet the requirements of this specification.5.2.1 Annealed (A).5.2.2 Hot rolled (HR).5.2.3 Strain
、hardened (B).NOTE 3The mechanical properties of the material result from the heattreat condition of the material. Any further heat treatment of the materialmay alter those properties and affect their ability to meet the specifiedstrength level. No re-treatment should be imposed without retesting to

Chemical Composition6.1 An analysis of each heat of steel shall be made by themanufacturer from test samples taken during the pouring orcasting of the steel. Such analysis shall meet the chemicalcomposition requirements specified in Table 2 by the pur-chaser.

、cificationA 484/A 484M.7. Requirements for Deformations7.1 Deformations shall be spaced along the bar at substan-tially uniform distances. The deformations on opposite sides ofthe bar shall be similar in size, shape, and pattern.7.2 The deformations shall be placed with respect to the axisof the bar
、 so that the included angle is not less than 45. Wherethe line of deformations forms an included angle with the axisof the bar of from 45 to 70 inclusive, the deformations shallalternately reverse in direction on each side or those on oneside shall be reversed in direction from those on the opposite
、side. Where the line of deformation is over 70, a reversal indirection is not required.7.3 The average spacing or distance between deformationson each side of the bar shall not exceed seven tenths of thenominal diameter of the bar.7.4 The overall length of deformations shall be such that thegap (mea
、sured as a chord) between the ends of the deforma-tions shall not exceed 1212 % of the nominal perimeter of thebar. Where the ends terminate in a rib, the width of the rib shallbe considered as the gap between these ends. The summationof the gaps shall not exceed 25 % of the nominal perimeter ofthe
、bar. Furthermore, the summation of gaps shall not exceed25 % of the nominal perimeter of the bar. The nominalperimeter of the bar shall be 3.1416 times the nominaldiameter.7.5 The spacing, height, and gap of deformations shallconform to the requirements prescribed in Table 1.8. Measurement of Deform
、ations8.1 The average spacing of deformations shall be deter-mined by measuring the length of a minimum of ten spaces anddividing that length by the number of spaces included in themeasurement. The measurement shall begin from a point on adeformation at the beginning of the first space to a correspo
、nd-ing point on a deformation after the last included space.Spacing measurements shall not be made over a bar areacontaining bar marking symbols.8.2 The average height of deformations shall be determinedfrom measurements made on not less than two typical defor-mations. Determinations shall be based
、on three measurementsper deformation, one at the center of the overall length and theother two at the quarter points of the overall length.8.3 Insufficient height, insufficient circumferential cover-age, or excessive spacing of deformations shall not constitutecause for rejection unless it has been
、clearly established bydeterminations on each lot (Note 4) tested that typical defor-mation height, gap, or spacing does not conform to theminimum requirements prescribed in Section 7. No rejectionshall be made on the basis of measurements if fewer than tenadjacent deformations on each side of the ba
、r are measured.NOTE 4A lot, for this purpose, is defined as all the bars of one barnumber and pattern of deformation contained in an individual shippingrelease or shipping order.9. Tensile Requirements9.1 The material, as represented by the test specimens, shallconform to the requirements for tensil
、e properties prescribed inTable 3 or by agreement between the manufacturer and thepurchaser.9.2 The yield strength shall be determined by the offsetmethod (0.2 % offset), as described in Test Methods andDefinitions A 370 (paragraph 13.2.1).9.3 The percentage of elongation shall be as prescribed inTa

When the actual percentage of elongation meets orexceeds 25 % of the bending requirements in Section 10 shallbe waived.TABLE 3 Tensile RequirementsNOTE 1Check with producer for availability of grades and sizes.Grade 40 280 Grade 60 420 Grade 75 520Tensile strength, min, psi MPa 70 000 500 90
