Classification4.1 Steel box culverts are furnished in five types. Each typerepresents an alternate means of providing the
21、required struc-tural strength. The shell thickness and, where applicable, thestiffener thickness and spacing class at the crown and haunchof the box culvert are permitted to differ, provided they satisfythe ordering information and the design properties (see 5.1 and6.1). Furthermore, while the box c
22、ulvert structure shall besupplied in a consistent type throughout its length, the shellthickness and, where applicable, the stiffener thickness andspacing class also are permitted to be varied along the length,in accordance with cover and loading requirements, as agreedupon between the purchaser and
23、 the fabricator.4.1.1 Type I Box Culvert, consisting of a corrugated plateshell having 6 by 2 in. 152 by 51 mm corrugations incombination with spaced, cold formed, corrugated plate stiff-eners as detailed in Fig. 2. Stiffener spacing classes shall be asdefined below and as illustrated in Fig. 3.4.1.

35、 by the hydraulic design may be important in somecases.5.1.5 The design ground surface profile documenting thelocation and magnitude of the minimum and maximum coverheight over structure top centerline (measured from the insidecrest of the corrugated plate to the finished surface of thetraveled way)
36、,NOTE 2The design specifications limit cover height to a range ofbetween 1.4 ft and 5.0 ft 0.43 m and 1.52 m. Small deviations in theheight of cover can make a significant difference in the design. It isrecommended that the purchaser specify the ground surface profile to thenearest 0.1 ft 30 mm.5.1.

Design Properties6.1 The required design properties shall be determined forthe crown and haun
46、ch segments of the box culvert in accor-dance with the ordering information and the AASHTO LRFDBridge Design Specifications, Customary U.S. Units (LRFDBridge Design Specifications, SI Units) (see 1.6 and 2.2). TheAASHTO specifications are applicable for the range of geo-metric limits given in Fig. 1
47、 and Table 1.7. Materials and Coatings7.1 The corrugated plate material utilized for the shells ofType I, II, III and IV box culverts shall be fabricated from steelsheet or plate conforming to the chemical, mechanical, thick-ness, shape, and coating requirements of Specification A761/A761M. The corr
48、ugated plate material for Type V box culvertsshall be fabricated from steel sheet or plate meeting the samerequirements of A761/A761M except with a higher minimumflat plate yield strength of 40 ksi 275 MPa and in accordancewith the requirements of 7.11.7.2 Stiffeners for Type I box culverts shall be
49、 6 by 3 in. 152by 76 mm cold formed sections fabricated from steel sheet orplate conforming to the chemical, mechanical, thickness andcoating requirements of Specification A761/A761M. Theyshall also meet the dimensions and tolerances of Fig. 2.7.3 Stiffeners for Type II box culverts shall be 3 by 5 by 0.5in. 76 by 127 by 13 mm hot rolled steel angles conforming tothe dimensional requirements of Specification A6/A6M and tothe chemical and mechanical requirements of SpecificationA36/A36M.
