、Designation: A986/A986M 01 (Reapproved 2016)Standard Specification forMagnetic Particle Examination of Continuous Grain FlowCrankshaft Forgings1This standard is issued under the fixed designation A986/A986M; the number immediately following the designation indicates the yearof original adoption or,
、in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers the magnetic particle exami-nation of forged continuous
、 grain flow (CGF) crankshaftsintended for medium speed diesel engines.1.2 For the purpose of magnetic particle indicationassessment, the crankshaft is divided into four zones ofdecreasing operational stress.Acceptance criteria have been setfor each zone.1.3 The engines to which these crankshafts are
、 fitted arecommonly used for diesel electric locomotives, marinepropulsion, and power generation. Engines fueled by naturalgas also fall into this medium speed category.1.4 Specification A983/A983M is a product specificationthat covers the manufacture of CGF crankshafts.1.5 The values stated in eith
、er inch-pound units or SI unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, theSI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in eachsystem are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system shallbe used independently of the other. Combining values from thetwo systems may result in
