Ordering Information3.1 Orders for material under this specification shall includethe following information:3.1.1 Quantity of each size,3.1.2 Wire size-diameter

Material4.1 Tin for CoatingThe tin used for coating shall becommercially pure (Explanatory Note 1). For pur

8、poses of thisspecification, the tin shall be considered commercially pure ifthe total of other elements, exclusive of copper, does notexceed 1 %. Notwithstanding the previous sentence, chemicalanalysis of the tin coating or of the tin used for coating shall notbe required under this specification. A

9、dequacy of the tincoating is assured by the continuity of coating and adherence ofcoating requirements (see 5.4 and 5.5, respectively).4.2 Copper-Base MetalThe base metal shall be copper ofsuch quality and purity that the finished product shall haveproperties and characteristics prescribed in this s

10、pecification.NOTE 1Specification B49 defines copper suitable for use.4.3 Copper bars of special qualities, forms, or types, as maybe agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser,and which will conform to the requirements prescribed in thisspecification, may also be used.5. General Requirem

11、ents (See Section 8)5.1 Tensile Strength and Elongation (Explanatory Note 2and Note 3)The tinned wire shall conform to the require-ments for elongation prescribed in Table 1. No requirementsfor tensile strength are specified. For wire whose nominaldiameter is more than 0.001 in. (0.025 mm) greater t

12、han a sizelisted in Table 1, but less than that of the next larger size, therequirements of the next larger size shall apply.5.2 Resistivity (Explanatory Note 1 and Note 4)The elec-trical resistivity of tinned wire at a temperature of 20C shallnot exceed the values prescribed in Table 2.5.3 Dimensio

The tin-coated wire shall not vary from thespecified diameter by more than the amounts prescribed inTable 3.5.4 Continuity of CoatingThe tin coating shall be continu-ous. The continuity of

17、coating on the wire shall be determinedon representative samples taken before stranding or insulating.The continuity of tinning shall be determined by the hydro-chloric acid-sodium polysulfide test in accordance with 6.3.5.5 Adherence of CoatingThe tin coating shall be firmlyadherent to the surface

18、of the copper. The adherence of coatingon the wire shall be determined on representative samplestaken before stranding or insulating. The adherence of coatingshall be determined by the wrapping and immersion test inaccordance with 6.4 for 0.0320 in. (0.813 mm) and larger sizes.5.6 JointsNecessary jo

19、ints in the completed wire and inthe wire and rods prior to final drawing shall be made inaccordance with the best commercial practice.5.7 FinishThe coating shall consist of a smooth continu-ous layer, firmly adherent to the surface of the copper. The wireshall be free of all imperfections not consi

20、stent with the bestcommercial practice.6. Test Methods6.1 Tensile Strength and Elongation (Explanatory Note 5):6.1.1 No test for tensile strength shall be required.6.1.2 The elongation of wire with a nominal diametergreater than 0.0808 in. (2.052 mm) shall be determined as thepermanent increase in l

21、ength due to the breaking of the wire intension. The elongation shall be measured between gage marksplaced originally 10 in. (254 mm) apart upon the test specimenand expressed in percent of the original length.6.1.3 The elongation of wire with a nominal diameter equalto or less than 0.0808 in. (2.05

22、3 mm) may be determined asdescribed above or by measurements made between the jaws ofthe testing machine. When measurements are made betweenthe jaws, the zero length shall be the distance between the jawsat the start of the tension test and be as near 10 in. (254 mm)as practicable. The final length

23、shall be the distance betweenthe jaws at the time of rupture. The fracture shall be betweengage marks or jaws of the testing machine, depending onmethod used, and not closer than 1 in. (25.4 mm) to either gagemark or jaw.6.2 Dimensional MeasurementsDimensional measure-ments shall be made with a micr

24、ometer caliper equipped witha vernier graduated in 0.0001 in. (0.0025 mm). Measurementsshall be made on at least three places on each unit selected forthis test. If accessible, one measurement shall be taken on eachend and one near the middle. The average of the threemeasurements shall determine com

33、 have alength of about 6 in. (152 mm). They shall be tagged or markedto correspond with the coil, spool, or reel from which they werecut.6.3.1.2 Treatment of SpecimensThe specimens shall bethoroughly cleaned by immersion in a suitable organic solventfor at least 3 min; then removed and wiped dry wit

34、h a clean,soft cloth (Cautionsee Explanatory Note 6). The specimensthus cleaned shall be kept wrapped in a clean, dry cloth untiltested. That part of the specimen to be immersed in the testsolution shall not be handled. Care shall be taken to avoidabrasion by the cut ends.6.3.2 Special Solutions Req

35、uired:6.3.2.1 Hydrochloric Acid Solution (HCl) (sp gr 1.088)Commercial HCl (sp gr 1.12) shall be diluted with distilledwater to a specific gravity of 1.088 measured at 15.6C (60F).A portion of HCl solution having a volume of 180 mL shall beconsidered to be exhausted when the number of test specimens

36、prescribed in Table 4 of a size as indicated in 6.3.3 have beenimmersed in it for two cycles.6.3.2.2 Sodium Polysulfide Solution (sp gr 1.142) (Ex-planatory Note 7)A concentrated solution shall be made bydissolving sodium sulfide cp crystals in distilled water until thesolution is saturated at about

37、 21C (70F), and adding sufficientflowers of sulfur (in excess of 250 g/L of solution) to providecomplete saturation, as shown by the presence in the solutionof an excess of sulfur after the solution has been allowed tostand for at least 24 h. The test solution shall be made bydiluting a portion of t

38、he concentrated solution with distilledwater to a specific gravity of 1.135 to 1.145 at 15.6C (60F).The sodium polysulfide test solution should have sufficientstrength to blacken thoroughly a piece of clean untinned copperwire in 5 s. The test solution used for testing samples shall beconsidered exh

39、austed if it fails to blacken a piece of cleancopper as described above.6.3.3 Procedure:6.3.3.1 Immersion of SpecimensImmerse a length of atleast 4-12 in. (114 mm) from each of the clean specimens, inaccordance with the following cycles, in test solutions main-tained at a temperature between 15.6 an

40、d 21C (60 and 70F):(1) Immerse the specimen for 1 min in the HCl solutiondescribed in 6.3.2, wash, and wipe dry; (2) immerse thespecimen for 30 s in the sodium polysulfide solution describedin 6.3.2, wash, and wipe dry; (3) immerse the specimen for 1min in the HCl solution, wash, and dry; (4) immers

41、e thespecimen for 30 s in the sodium polysulfide solution, wash, andwipe dry.6.3.3.2 Washing SpecimensAfter each immersion, imme-diately wash the specimens thoroughly in clean water and wipedry with a clean, soft cloth.6.3.3.3 Examination of SpecimensAfter immersion andwashing, examine the specimens

42、 to ascertain if copper exposedthrough openings in the tin coating has been blackened byaction of the sodium polysulfide. The specimens shall beconsidered to have failed if, by such blackening, exposedcopper is revealed. No attention shall be paid to blackeningwithin 0.5 in. (12.7 mm) of the cut end

43、. A grayish brownappearance of the coating shall not constitute failure.6.4 Adherence of Coating:6.4.1 Specimens:6.4.1.1 Length of SpecimensTest specimens shall be ap-proximately 12 in. (305 mm) in length and shall be tagged ormarked to correspond with the coil, spool, or reel from whichthey are cut

44、.6.4.1.2 Treatment of SpecimensThe specimens shall bethoroughly cleaned, if required, by immersion in a suitableorganic solvent for at least 3 min, then removed and dried(Cautionsee Explanatory Note 6). The specimens thuscleaned shall be kept wrapped in a clean dry cloth until tested.That part of th

45、e specimens to be immersed in the test solutionshall not be handled. Care shall be taken to avoid abrasion ofthe surface to be subjected to test. Wire of sizes 0.005 in. (0.13mm) and smaller may be cleaned after wrapping around themandrel.6.4.2 Procedure:6.4.2.1 WrappingSlowly wrap the test specimen

46、 in asuitable manner in an open helix around a polished mandrelhaving rounded ends and a diameter not to exceed four timesthe nominal diameter of the specimen. Take care not to stretchthe specimen during the wrapping operation. The spacing ofthe consecutive turns shall be approximately equal to thed

47、iameter of the wire. For sizes 0.021 in. (0.53 mm) and smaller,not more than six helical turns shall be used for the test, and forwire larger than 0.021 in., not more than three turns shall beused.6.4.2.2 Immersion TestRemove the helically wrapped por-tion of the test specimen from the mandrel and i

48、mmersecompletely in the sodium polysulfide solution (see 6.3.2) for 30s at the temperature prescribed in 6.3.3. On removal from thesodium polysulfide solution, immediately rinse the specimen inclean water and remove the excess by shaking.6.4.2.3 Examination of SpecimensExamine visually theouter peri

49、pheral surface of the helically wrapped portion of thespecimen. For wires 0.021 in. (0.53 mm) and smaller, amagnification not greater than three times may be used. Anycracking or parting of the coating in this area shown byblackening of the copper shall be cause for rejection.
