Requirement for Wires5.1 Before stranding, the aluminum-alloy wire shall meetthe requirements of Specification B398/B398M.5.2 Before stranding, the steel core wire shall meet therequirements of Specification B341/B341M, B498/B498M,B502, B606, B802/B802M

24、,orB803, whichever is applicable.5.3 Steel core supplied in a stranded construction shall meetthe requirements of Specification B500/B500M, if applicable.6. Joints6.1 Cold-pressure welds, electric-butt welds, and electric-butt, cold-upset welds in the finished individual aluminumalloy wires composin

25、g the conductor may be made during thestranding process. Following welding, electric-butt welds shallbe annealed for a distance of at least 150 mm on each side ofthe weld. No weld shall occur within 15 m of a weld in thesame wire or in any other wire of the completed conductor(Explanatory Note 3).6.

26、2 There shall be no joints made in the finished steel wires.7. Lay Factors7.1 The length of lay in the various layers of wire in aconductor shall conform to Table 2 (Explanatory Note 4).7.2 The direction of lay of the outside layer of aluminum-alloy wires shall be right-hand unless otherwise specifi

27、ed in thepurchase order. The direction of lay of the aluminum alloy andsteel wires shall be reversed in successive layers.8. Construction8.1 The number and diameter of aluminum alloy and steelwires and the areas of cross section of aluminum alloy wiresshall conform to the requirements prescribed in

28、Table 1.9. Rated Strength of Conductor9.1 The rated strength of a conductor shall be taken as thesum of the strengths of the aluminum alloy and steelcomponents, calculated as follows:9.1.1 The strength contribution of the aluminum-alloy wiresshall be the sum of the strengths of the 6201 wires, calcu

29、latedfrom their specified nominal wire diameter and the appropriatespecified minimum average tensile strength given in Specifi-cation B398/B398M, and multiplied by the aluminum-alloyRating Factor percentage for the conductor stranding as indi-cated in Table 3.9.1.2 The strength contribution of the s

30、teel core wires shallbe the sum of the strengths of the steel wires, calculated fromtheir specified nominal wire diameter and the appropriatespecified ultimate tensile strength given in SpecificationsB498/B498M, B341/B341M, B502, B606, B802/B802M,orB803, whichever is applicable, and multiplied by th

31、e steelRating Factor percentage for the conductor stranding as indi-cated in Table 3.9.1.3 The rated strengths of conductors calculated in accor-dance with 9.1 and 9.3 and using steel wires in accordance withSpecification B498/B498M or B802/B802M, Class A coatingare shown in Table 1.9.2 Tests for de

32、monstration of rated strength of a conductorare not required by this specification but may be made if agreedupon between the manufacturer and the purchaser at the time ofplacing an order. If tested, the breaking strength of theconductor shall be not less than the rated strength if failureoccurs in t

Mass and Electrical Resistance11.1 The mass and electrical resistance of a unit length ofstranded conductor are a function of the length of lay. Theapproximate mass and electrical resistance may be determinedusing the standard

44、 increments shown in Table 4. When greateraccuracy is desired, the increment based on the specific lay ofthe conductor may be calculated (Explanatory Note 6).11.2 In the calculation of the electrical resistance of acompleted conductor, the resistivity of coated steel core wiresshall be taken as 0.19

45、157-mm2/m at 20C, and the resistivityof aluminum-clad steel core wires shall be taken as 0.0848-mm2/m at 20C.12. Variation in Area12.1 The area of cross section of the aluminum-alloy wiresof a conductor shall be not less than 98 % of the area specified.Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, th

46、e manufacturermay have the option of determining the cross-sectional area byeither of the following methods, except that in case of questionregarding area compliance, the method of 12.1.2 shall be used:12.1.1 The area of cross section may be determined bycalculations from diameter measurements, expr

47、essed to threedecimal places, of the component aluminum wires at any pointwhen measured perpendicularly to their axes.12.1.2 The area of cross section of the aluminum-alloywires of a conductor may be determined by Test Method B263.In applying that method the increment in mass resulting fromstranding

48、 may be the applicable value specified in 11.1 or maybe calculated from the measured component dimensions of thesample under test. In case of question regarding areacompliance, the actual mass increment due to stranding shallbe calculated.13. Finish13.1 The conductor shall be free of imperfections n

49、otconsistent with good commercial practice.14. Mechanical and Electrical Tests14.1 Tests for mechanical and electrical properties ofaluminum-alloy wires shall be made before stranding (Ex-planatory Note 7).14.2 All aluminum-alloy wires composing the conductorsshall be capable of meeting the bending properties stated inSpecification B398/B398M after stranding. Routine productiontesting after stranding is not required.14.3 Routine production testing after stranding is not re-quired. However, when such tests are requested by the pur-chaser and agreed upon by
