7、4.1 The apparent density cup is filled with water andweighed to obtain the mass of water contained, which is thenconverted to a volume.5. Significance and Use5.1 This test method enables the measurement of the vol-ume of the apparent density cup to ensure that it complies withthe specified volume of

8、 25.00 6 0.03 cm3(cylindrical cup), or16.39 6 0.05 cm3(square cup). Use of an out-of-specificationcup will give erroneous apparent density values using theformulae in Test Methods B 212, B 329, and B 417.6. Apparatus6.1 Density CupA cylindrical cup (see Fig. 1) designed tohave a capacity of 25.00 6

9、0.03 cm3(as in Test MethodsB 212, B 329, and B 417) or a square cup designed to have acapacity of 16.39 6 0.05 cm3(as in Test Method B 329).6.2 Balance, suitable for weighing at least 200 g to thenearest 0.001 g.6.3 Microscope SlideA transparent microscope slide atleast as wide as the outer diameter

10、 of the apparent density cup.6.4 WaterDistilled or deionized water boiled to removedissolved air.6.5 AlcoholLow residue ethyl alcohol.6.6 WireA wire not exceeding 2.5 mm in diameter by 150mm long.6.7 ThermometerA thermometer capable of measuringthe temperature of the water to the nearest 1C.7. Proce

11、dure7.1 Boil at least 150 mL of distilled or deionized water for5 min to remove dissolved air. Cool to room temperature andhandle so as to avoid the introduction of air bubbles.7.2 Clean the density cup with alcohol and dry thoroughly.7.3 Weigh, to the nearest 0.001 g, the density cup along witha cl

12、ean, clear microscope slide. 15、 clear microscope slide horizontallyacross the rim of the density cup, spilling the excess water overthe sides of the cup and center the microscope slide on top ofthe cup.7.7 If any air bubbles appear, remove the microscope slideand return to 7.4.7.8 Dry the outside of the density cup and the expose

16、dsurfaces of the microscope slide with paper toweling. Ensurethat the absorbency of the toweling does not wick water frominside the cup.7.9 Weigh, to the nearest 0.001 g, the dried density cupfilled with water with the microscope slide on top. This is thegross mass, G.7.10 Measure the temperature of

17、 the water to the nearest1C and determine the density of the water, rw, from Table 1.8. 19、the density cup to the nearest 0.01cm3.9.1.1 Cylindrical Cup:9.1.1.1 If the measured volume of the cylindrical densitycup falls within the specified range 25.00 6 0.03 cm3,itispermissible to use 25 cm3in the formula for calculatingapparent density in Test Methods B 212, B 329, and B 417.9.1.1.2 If t

20、he measured volume of the cylindrical densitycup falls outside the specified range of 25.00 6 0.03 cm3butfalls within the broader range of 24.8 to 25.2 cm3, then themeasured volume should be used in the formula for calculatingapparent density in Test Methods B 212, B 329, and B 417.9.1.2 Square Cup:

21、9.1.2.1 If the measured volume of the square density cupfalls within the specified range 16.39 6 0.05 cm3,itispermissible to use 16.39 cm3in the formula for calculatingapparent density in Test Method B 329.9.1.2.2 If the measured volume of the square density cupfalls outside the specified range of 1

22、6.39 6 0.05 cm3but fallswithin the broader range of 16.2 to 16.6 cm3, then themeasured volume should be used in the formula for calculatingapparent density in Test Method B 329.10.
