Scope1.1 This specification covers glass fiber unsupportedneedled felt binder-free insulation for thermal insulation. Thismaterial is u

3、sed as the thermal insulation component in thefabrication of insulation systems for use on machinery andequipment, such as steam turbines, boilers, boiler feed pumps,and piping at temperatures up to 1200F (650C).1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associa

Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 Terminology C 168 shall be considered as applying tothe terms used in this specification.3.1.2 Definitions in Specification D 578 shall be consideredas applying to the terms used in defining glass fiber composi-tion code, proc

10、ess, and fiber diameter.4. Classification4.1 Thermal insulation shall be glass fiber, unsupportedneedled felt insulation, for use on surfaces with temperaturesup to 1200F (650C).5. Ordering Information5.1 The purchase order or contract shall specify the follow-ing:5.1.1 Quantity of each thickness (1

11、0.1).5.1.2 Any special requirements for nonstandard sizes ordimensions (10.2 and 10.3).5.1.3 Any requirements for certification (19.1).5.1.4 Any special requirements for supplementary testingrequirements (9.1).6. Materials and Manufacture6.1 The material shall consist of 100 % glass fiber yarnsneedl

12、ed into insulation felts without the use of binders. Noorganic fibers and no glass or mineral shot shall be included inthe product. The insulation felt may be composed of laminatesformed without the use of binders. The glass fibers shall meetthe designation C, Continuous Filament Yarns, in accordanc

16、in thefinal product, when determined in accordance with the Fila-ment Diameter section of Specification D 578 shall conform tothe requirements of Table 1. The certification of the fineness offiber may be either by the felt manufacturer or by certificationof the glass yarn supplier and documentation

17、by the manufac-turer as to sources of supply.6.3 All materials used shall be asbestos-free.NOTE 2The fibers from glass composition designated as “E” glass(electrical glass) in the range from D through G meet the requirements ofTables 1 and 2.7. Physical Properties7.1 When tested in accordance with S

18、ection 16, the insula-tion shall conform to the physical requirements listed in Table2.8. Performance Characteristics8.1 Needled felt glass fiber insulation may be damaged ifany of the following conditions are encountered:8.1.1 Direct exposure to hydrofluoric acid.8.1.2 Prolonged direct exposure to

19、strong caustics.8.1.3 Prolonged exposure to boiling water.8.2 Conditions outlined in 8.1 are mentioned only to makethe user aware of such applications that require specialconsideration. Contact the insulation manufacturer for recom-mendations when the above conditions are anticipated.9. Other Requir

20、ements9.1 Supplementary requirements include qualification testsand acceptance tests to special standards. These supplementaryrequirements may be made by agreement to the supplier andthe purchaser only when specified in the purchase order orcontract.10. Standard Sizes and Dimensions10.1 ThicknessThe

21、 insulation shall be furnished in thethicknesses shown in Table 3.10.2 Insulation LengthUnless otherwise specified, theinsulation shall be furnished in rolls of the lengths given inTable 3.10.3 Insulation WidthUnless otherwise specified (5.1.2),the width of the insulation shall be 60 in. (1.52 m).10

22、.4 Nominal Weight per AreaThe insulation shall befurnished in the weight per area shown in Table 4.11. Dimensional Tolerances11.1 Thickness ToleranceThe average thickness as deter-mined in accordance with 16.1.1 shall be within 60.125 in.(3.2 mm) of the specified thickness.11.2 Mass per Area Toleran

23、ceThe average weight perarea shall be within 610 % of that specified in Table 4.11.3 Insulation Length/ToleranceThe tolerance on thelengths, listed in Table 3, shall be 6 in. (152 mm), withexcess permitted. A roll may either contain a maximum of onefull thickness splice or consist of a maximum of tw

24、o pieces.11.4 WidthThe width shall be within 0.5 in. (13 mm),to +1.0 in. (25 mm) of the specified width.12. Workmanship, Finish, and Appearance12.1 Since some requirements for this material are noteasily defined by a numerical value, the insulation shall nothave visible defects that will adversely a

25、ffect its servicequalities.13. Qualification Requirements13.1 The following requirements are generally employedfor the purpose of initial material or product qualification inaccordance with Criteria C 390:13.1.1 Standard sizes and dimensions,13.1.2 Thermal conductivity,13.1.3 Fineness of fiber,13.1.

Sampling14.1 The insulation shall be sampled for qualification test-ing and for inspection in accordance with Criteria C 390.Specific provision for sampling shall be agreed upon betweenthe purchaser and the supplier.15. Inspection Requirements15.1 Inspection for Quality AssuranceThe f

32、ollowing re-quirements are generally employed for purposes of acceptancesampling of lots or shipments of qualified felted insulation.15.1.1 Thickness.15.1.2 Mass per unit area.15.2 Points of InspectionWhen agreed to by the purchaserand the manufacturer, and when specified in the purchase orderor con

33、tract, the inspection of the material may be made ateither the point of shipment or point of delivery.16. Test Methods16.1 The properties enumerated in this specification shall bedetermined in accordance with the following test methods:16.1.1 ThicknessTest Methods C 167. Follow the speci-fied pressu

34、re alternative procedure of Test Methods C 167except that the expansion procedure for sample preparation isnot necessary. A test specimen shall be taken that is 4 ft long bythe full width of the insulation felt. The test specimen shall beruled off into 20 approximately square and equal areas, and th

35、ethickness measurement taken at the center of ten areas, no twoof which shall have a contiguous side. The specimen shall beplaced on a hard flat surface and the thickness shall bemeasured using a dial gage indicator. The gage shall have acircular presser foot 34 in. (76102 mm) in diameter. The foots

36、hall exert a pressure of 0.1 lb/in.2(7 gm/cm2) 6 10 %. Thegage shall be calibrated before use with a gage block. Theaverage of the ten thickness measurements shall be taken as thethickness of the test specimen.16.1.2 Area WeightTest Methods C 167, except that theexpansion procedure for sample prepar

37、ation is not necessary.The weight per unit area shall be reported in ounces per squarefoot (kilograms per square metre). The test specimen shall be4 ft long by the full width of the felt. The specimen taken forthe thickness measurement may also be used for the weight perunit area measurement.16.1.3

38、Apparent Thermal ConductivityApparent thermalconductivity shall be determined in accordance with TestMethods C 177 or C 518. In case of dispute, Test MethodC 177 shall be used.16.1.3.1 See Guide C 1045 for requirements and guidelinesfor the determination of thermal transmission properties.16.1.3.2 S

39、ee Guide C 1058 for guidelines for reportingthermal properties.16.2 Hot Surface PerformanceTest Method C 411. Thetest temperature shall be that specified in 3.1, or the manufac-turers recommended temperature, whichever is higher.16.3 Tensile StrengthThe tensile strength shall be deter-mined by the g

40、rab test method described in Method 5100 ofFED-STD-191 with the following exceptions: The test sampleshall be from 12 to 14 in. long by the full width of the felt. Fivetest specimens measuring 12 in. in the width direction by 12 to14 in. (305 by 355 mm) long shall be cut from the sample. Thespecimen

41、s shall be clamped at the top and bottom sections bya nominal12 in. (12 mm) pipe covered with 0.25-in. (6-mm)thick sponge rubber to prevent cutting and slipping of thespecimens. The clamped specimens, having a test area of about1ft2(0.09 m2) shall be attached to the grips of the testingmachine that

42、shall separate at a rate of 2 6 0.2 in. (51 6 5mm)/min until rupture occurs. Tensile strength determinationsshall be made on specimens before and after being subjected tosoaking heat to 1200F (650C) for 6 h. The tensile strengthshall be expressed in pounds per square inch (kilopascals)based on the n

43、ominal cross-sectional area. The tensile strengthfor purposes of determining conformance shall be the averageof the five measurements on these specimens (see Table 2).16.4 Fire ResistanceTest method USCG 164.009 (in ac-cordance with MIL-STD-1623).17. Rejection and Rehearing17.1 Material that fails t

44、o conform to the requirements ofthe agreed upon specification may be rejected. Rejectionshould be reported to the producer or supplier promptly and inwriting. In case of dissatisfaction with the results of the test, theproducer or the supplier may make claim for a rehearing.17.2 Upon the request of

45、the purchaser in the contract ororder, the certification of an independent third party indicatingconformance to the requirements of this specification may beaccepted instead of the manufacturers certification.17.3 In case of rejection, the manufacturer or supplier shallhave the right to reinspect th

46、e rejected shipment and resubmitthe lot after removal of the portion of the shipment notconforming to the specified requirements.18. Certification18.1 When specified in the purchase order or contract, theproducer or the supplier shall furnish a certificate to thepurchaser that the material was manuf

47、actured, sampled, andtested or inspected in accordance with this specification andhas been found to meet the requirements. The supplier shallfurnish a summary of the documentation of the qualificationtest results or the inspection test results, or both, upon request.19. Packaging and Package Marking

48、19.1 PackagingUnless otherwise agreed upon or speci-fied between the purchaser and manufacturer or supplier,insulation shall be packed in the manufacturers standardcommercial containers.19.2 Package MarkingUnless otherwise specified, eachcontainer shall be plainly marked with the manufacturersname,

49、the product name, and quantity of the material in thecontainer.20.
