For comparative purposes the abso
4、rption test affords a simple andsufficiently accurate means of obtaining the desired information. As applied to slate this test requiressomewhat more care and precision than many other materials because of its dense nature and, consequently, the small quantities to be dealt with. Furthermore, the cle

On this account misleading results are often obtained on cubical specimens dueto accidental cleavage cracks in the specimens. The shapes of specimens a

Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the waterabsorption of slate.1.2 UnitsThe values stated in either SI

Thevalues stated in each system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other.Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.1.3 This standard d

Test Specimens5.1 The test specimens shall consist of square or rectangularslabs from316 to516 in. 5 to 8 mm in thickness and not lessthan 4 in. 100 mm on any side.5.2 Not less than six specimens shall be prepared from eachsample of slate, the sample being considered as an

Preparation of Specimens7.1 Split the slate to the required thickness and saw to size. When the specimens are prepared from shingles no saw cutshall be nearer

Procedure, Preferred Method8.1 Dry the specimens for 48 h in a ventilated oven at atemperature of 140 6 4F 60 6 2C. At the 46th, 47th, and48th hour, weigh
17、 the specimens to ensure that the weight is thesame. If the weight continues to drop, continue to dry thespecimens until there are three successive hourly readings withthe same weight.8.2 After drying, cool the specimens in the room for 15 minand then weigh. When the specimens cannot be weighedimmed

Deter-mine the weight to the nearest 0.0005 oz 0.01 g.8.3 Entirely immerse the specimens in filtered or distilledwater at approximately 68 6 9F 20 6 5C for 48 h, removeone at a time, wipe the surface dry with a slightly damp, absorbent towel (Note 1)
19、and immediately weigh each speci-men to the nearest 0.0005 oz 0.01 g.NOTE 1The operator should distinguish between a damp towel and awet one. In starting the operation, the towel should be sprinkled lightly. When the surface of the specimen is properly wiped off, it should appeardry.9. Procedure, Alt
20、ernative Method9.1 Occasionally it is desirable to obtain results in a shorterperiod than that required by the procedure described in Section8. In such cases, the 48 h immersion period may be supplantedby an 8 h boiling period (Note 2). In this alternative method theoperations shall be the same as d

Before the final weighing, cool thespecimens by allowing tap water to flow over them for at least30 min.NOTE 2Boi
