Terminology3.1 Definitions: For defin

7、itions of terms used in this prac-tice, refer to Terminologies C 1180 and C 1232.4. Significance and Use4.1 Masonry units and masonry specimens are sometimesremoved as part of an assessment of the condition of masonryconstruction. This document is intended to standardize thepreparation of such units

8、 and masonry specimens for compres-sive and flexural bond strength testing.NOTE 1Masonry specimens removed from existing masonry con-struction (single wythe, multi-wythe or portions thereof) will sometimescontain mortar, grout, reinforcement, or accessory materials.4.2 This practice provides informa

9、tion pertaining to theremoval of hardened mortar, cleaning, and other specialpreparation required prior to compressive and flexural bondstrength testing of a manufactured masonry unit or masonryspecimen that has been removed from usage.4.3 This practice does not address test procedures or the useof

10、test results conducted on removed specimens. This practicedoes not determine whether removed masonry materials metoriginal specification requirements.NOTE 2Compressive and flexural bond strength test results of ma-sonry units and masonry specimens extracted from the field are expectedto vary from an

11、d will likely be less than test results of masonry units thathave not been placed in service or masonry prisms that have beenconstructed within a controlled environment. Comparison of results oftests conducted on specimens removed from service to those of masonryunits prior to use or of constructed

12、prisms is difficult. Considerablejudgment is typically required for the selection and preparation ofspecimens removed from service.5. Inspection of Specimens5.1 Specimens shall be selected, removed from service, andshipped in accordance to Practice C 1532.5.2 Carefully remove specimens from transpor

13、tation pack-aging. Visually inspect specimens. Compare received speci-mens with visual assessment as reported under PracticeC 1532. 16、United States.5.2.1 If specimen shipment does not include a visual assess-ment report, note the report as missing as part of the subse-quent test report and document condition of each specimen asreceived.5.3 Take photographs of specimens as received to documentcondition prior to any preparation for

17、testing.6. Preparation for Compressive Strength Testing6.1 Preparation of Units and Prisms:6.1.1 Unless required by the testing procedure that will besubsequently used to evaluate the specimen, do not oven drythe test specimens.6.1.2 Remove all unsound material and smooth irregulari-ties of the unit

18、s or masonry specimens bearing surfaces usinga method that will not affect the integrity of the unit or masonryspecimen to produce a test specimen, either a unit or a prism,that is no more than18 in. (3 mm) out of level over 12 in. (305mm) and no more than18 in. (3 mm) out of plumb over 12 in.(305 m

19、m).6.1.3 Test specimens are subsequently capped to provide alevel-bearing surface for compressive strength testing. There-fore, it is not necessary to remove portions of hardened mortarin recesses of masonry.6.1.4 Ungrouted masonry specimens are particularly sus-ceptible to damage during handling an

20、d preparation for testing.Use care to limit the potential damage to the bond betweenmortar and manufactured masonry units in the masonry speci-men.6.1.5 If necessary, remove sound material to produce a moresuitable test specimen.6.1.6 If possible, avoid producing test specimens containingunsupported

21、 protrusions (from face shells or webs of hollowunits) whose lengths are more than twice their thickness.6.1.7 If possible, avoid saw-cuts that reduce the thickness ofthe webs and face shells of hollow units or prisms.6.1.8 If possible, prepare test specimens to minimize varia-tions in length and wi

22、dth provided such preparation does notdamage the test specimen.6.1.9 Remove loose and unsound mortar. Remove excessmortar that would interfere with capping from the top andbottom of bearing surfaces of the unit or prism. However, ifsuch removal is expected to do more harm to the test specimenthan go

23、od, leave mortar in place.6.1.10 Discard all test specimens that are damaged as aresult of removing unsound material. Resulting damage isassessed by comparing visible cracking, or chipping on the unitor prism after removal to that documented under 6.1.2 and6.1.3. Do not discard test specimens if res

24、ulting damage occursin portions of the test specimen that will be subsequently cut orotherwise modified so that the damaged portion of the masonryunit or masonry specimen will not be tested.6.1.11 Document methods used in removal of unsoundmaterials and smoothing irregularities of unit or prism sur-

25、faces.6.1.12 Take photographs of test specimens after preparationhas been completed to document condition prior to capping.6.2 Masonry Units:6.2.1 Refer to Test Methods C67for additional informationrelative to the preparation of brick and structural clay tile testspecimens prior to testing.6.2.2 Ref

26、er to Test Methods C 140 for additional informa-tion relative to the preparation of concrete masonry unit testspecimens prior to testing.NOTE 3Individual masonry units filled or partially filled with grout ormortar should not be used to determine the compressive strength of themasonry units or of th

27、e masonry assembly. If evaluation of groutedmasonry is desired, it should be performed on masonry assembliesmeeting the requirements of Section 6.3.6.3 Masonry Prisms:6.3.1 The masonry prisms shall:6.3.1.1 Include at least one bed joint,6.3.1.2 Have an aspect ratio (height divided by least lateraldi

28、mension) between 1.3 and 5,6.3.1.3 Have a height defined by at least two units, each ofwhich are no less than one-half the full height of a typical unit,6.3.1.4 Have a minimum length of12 unit and a maximumlength of 2 units, and6.3.1.5 Not contain vertical reinforcement.6.3.2 For prisms containing u

29、nits of varying sizes and/orshapes, unit height and length shall be considered that of thelargest unit height or the largest unit length within the prism,respectively.6.3.3 Refer to Test Method C 1314 for additional informa-tion relative to the preparation of masonry prisms prior totesting.7. Prepar

30、ation for Flexural Bond Strength Testing7.1 Where mortar fins and extrusions project from thespecimen to the extent that they interfere with the attachmentof the bond wrench, they shall be removed without causingdamage to the specimen. Remove only enough material toenable proper attachment of the bo

31、nd wrench apparatus definedin Test Method C 1072.7.2 Do not discard test specimens if resulting damageoccurs in portions of the test specimen that will be subse-quently cut or otherwise modified so that the damaged portionof the masonry unit or masonry specimen will not be tested.7.3 Document method

32、s used in removal of unsound mate-rials and smoothing irregularities of unit or prism surfaces.7.4 Take photographs of test specimens after preparationhas been completed to document condition prior to testing.7.5 Refer to Test Method C 1072 for additional informationrelative to the preparation of ma

33、sonry prisms prior to testing.8. Report8.1 Prepare a written report with the following information:8.1.1 Identification of structure from which specimens wereobtained.8.1.2 General description of specimens.8.1.3 Name of parties that sampled and transported thespecimens.8.1.4 Documented condition of

34、specimens as received, in-cluding photographs.8.1.5 Description of procedures used to prepare the speci-mens.C15870928.1.6 Documented condition of specimens after preparationfor testing, including photographs.8.1.7 Noted presence of unsupported projections, if any,with accompanying note that such pr
