This test method is intended toshow whether calcium sulfate has been used in cement in suchamount to leave excess soluble sulfate in hardened mortar. Thetest method is used to establish compliance in SpecificationC 595 for those cements in which

This test method also can provide useful informa-tion on other hydraulic cements, such as those specified inSpecifications C 150 and C 1157.4.2 When this test method is used in conjunction with TestMethod C 563, use the appropriate age of test specimens (24 h,3 d

Temperature and Relative Humidity7.1 Maintain the temperature of the molding room at 23.0 62.0 C . Adjust the temperature of the dry materials and themixing water, prior to mixing, so that

17、 the temperature of themortar, immediately upon completion of mixing is 23 6 1C.7.2 Maintain the relative humidity of the laboratory so thatit is not less than 50 %.8. Preparation of Test Mortar8.1 Proportion the mortar in accordance with the instruc-tions for a six-cube batch given in the section o

18、n Compositionof Mortars of Test Method C 109/C 109M, except use awater-cementious material ratio of 0.5, by mass. Mix mechani-cally in accordance with Procedure for Mixing Mortars ofPractice C 305.8.2 Split the batch immediately after mixing then placeapproximately 450 g of mortar in each of the two

19、 polyethylenecontainers. Obtain the temperature of each portion to ensurethat it is within the range 23 6 1 C . If bags are used, twist theneck of each and seal with a rubber band; double the neck overand seal with a second band. If sheets are used to contain thesamples, gather the corners and edges

20、 to make a bag and sealin similar manner.9. Storage of Test Mortar9.1 Immediately immerse both containers in the water bathmaintained at (23.0 6 0.15 C) .10. Preparation of Cement Extract10.1 At 24 614 h, 3 days 6 1 h, or 7 days 6 3 h, after theinstant the cement and water were mixed together, remov

21、e thecontainers successively from the water bath, pulverizing eachsample in turn with the pestle in the mortar as rapidly aspossible. Immediately upon removal from the water bath treateach sample individually as follows: First pulverize approxi-mately one third of the specimen until most of it passe

22、s the2.36-mm (No. 8) sieve. Return the coarse residue to the mortarand grind another one third of the specimen as before. Repeatthe process until the entire specimen is pulverized to pass the2.36-mm (No. 8) sieve. Place 400 g of the pulverized materialin a 600-mL beaker and add 100 mL of water at a

23、temperatureof 23.0 6 0.6 C . Quickly mix to uniform consistency with aspatula; then stir mechanically for 2 min. Use a stirrer of sucha type and speed that all particles of the slurry are suspended,with no settling and no appreciable increase of the temperatureof the slurry occurs.10.2 Filter the sl

24、urry on a dry No. 2A Bchner funnel withthe aid of suction using a dry 90-mm, medium, ashless paper.Complete filtration within a period of 2 min. Filter again,whether the filtrate is turbid or not, using a new dry filter paperwithout suction.11. Analysis of the Extract11.1 Transfer 50.0 mL of the cle

25、ar extract by means of a50-mL pipet to a 400-mL beaker, dilute with distilled water toabout 250 mL, and add 5 mL of concentrated hydrochloric acid(HCl, sp gr 1.19). Heat to boiling, and proceed in accordancewith the sulfur trioxide determination section of Test MethodsC114. Perform a blank on the re

26、agents in use in the analysis.11.1.1 After the BaCl2solution is added in accordance withthe sulfur trioxide determination section of Test MethodsC114, boil the solution vigorously for 15 min.11.2 When the amount of filtrate is insufficient to provide a50-mL aliquot, use 25 mL of the extract and a fa

27、ctor twice thatgiven in Section 12.12. Calculation and Report12.1 Calculate the SO3content to the nearest 0.01 g/L ofsolution, as follows:SO3, g/L 5 W 3 6.86 (1)where:W = grams of barium sulfate (BaSO4) precipitated.12.2 Report the average of the two determinations.12.3 Report the age of the test sp

28、ecimens.13. Precision and Bias13.1 PrecisionThe single-operator (within-laboratory)standard deviation has been found to be 0.077 g/L SO3throughout the range of 0.20 to 0.85 g/LSO3. Therefore, resultsof two properly conducted tests by the same operator onwater-extractable SO3in hardened hydraulic cem

29、ent mortars ofthe same material should not differ from each other by morethan 0.22 g/L SO3. The multi-laboratory (between-laboratory)standard deviation has been found to be 0.137g/L SO3through-out the range of 0.20 to 0.85 g/L SO3. Therefore, results of twoproperly conducted tests on the same materi

30、al, from twodifferent laboratories on water-extractable SO3in hardenedhydraulic cement mortars should not differ from each other bymore than 0.39 g/L SO3.13.2 BiasNo justifiable statement can be made on the biasof the procedure in this test method for measuring thewater-extractable SO3in hardened hy
