Summary of Test Method4.1 The material shall be tested in the “dry” condition or inthe “as manufactured and
7、received” condition (see Note 1) butthe procedure must be consistent with that as given in thematerial specification. If the material is to be tested in the “dry”condition it shall be dried to constant mass. If the materialspecification does not give conditioning instructions, a condi-tioning enviro
8、nment of 73F 6 4F (23C 6 2C) and 50 65 % relative humidity per Practice C870 shall be used. Fromthe measured mass and measured dimensions, the density ofthe product is calculated.NOTE 1Some materials may contain volatiles such as moisture whenmanufactured or shipped, or both.5. Significance and Use5
9、.1 Dimensional measurements of the product thermal in-sulation are essential in determining compliance of a productwith specification limits. Dimensional measurements of vari-ous test specimens are also required by the specific testmethod.5.2 Density measurements of the product insulation areuseful
10、in determining compliance of a product with specifica-tion limits, and in providing a relative gage of product weights. For any one kind of insulation, some important physical andmechanical properties, such as thermal conductivity, heatcapacity, strength, etc., bear a specific relationship with itsde
11、nsity. In order to design for equipment supports, check thematerial for the “as received density” where the moisturecontent of the product as received and then installed has thepotential to be consequential.6. Test Specimen7.1 The test specimens shall be of commercial size when-ever practicable, but shall not be less than 4 in. wide by 8 in.long (100 mm wide by 200 mm

If not specifiedthere, then in accordance with Practice C390 test at least fivespecimens.7.2 When less than full commercial size pieces are testedends and sides shall

Conditioning8.1 If the specimens are to be conditioned, condition thespecimens to constant mass in accordance with Practice C870.Consult the materials specification for any
20、specific condition-ing requirements.8.2 If the specimens are not to be conditioned, test as soonas possible.9. Procedure9.1 After conditioning, measure the width and length of thespecimen to the nearest 1 mm unless different tolerances aregiven in the material specification, or there are differentme

At approximately alongthe A-B and C-D lines for the width and the A-D and B-C linesfor the length. For specimens larger than 10 ft2(1 m2) in area, there shall be
23、an additional two thickness measurements foreach additional 10 ft2(1 m2) in size. These would be in thecentral section of the specimen as shown by locations E and F.There shall also be an additional length or width measurementfor each additional meter increase in length or width over 3 ft(1 m) long.
24、 These measurement positions shall be spacedapproximately equally within the original measurement areadefined by A,B,C,D.9.4 Measure and record the mass.10.
