Terminology3.1 Definition

5、sDefinitions shall be in accordance withTerminology C119.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 service lifea period of time over which the slatematerial is expected to require no repair or replacement due toweathering.3.2.2 ribbonsnarrow bands of carbonaceous material,darker in co

6、lor than the surrounding slate. These ribbons areinclusions of the original beds and are softer and less durablethan the surrounding material.4. Classification4.1 Roofing slate shall be classified by grade in accordancewith the physical requirements of Table 1, with the classifica-tion limited to th

7、e test specimen thickness, or greater thickness,as determined under Test Methods C 120.4.2 When comparing slates of the same grade and equalthickness, but from various sources, slates which meet therequired breaking load at the lowest specimen thickness willyield the best performance on the roof in

8、terms of resistance toimpact damage.4.3 Expected service life of the various grades, dependingon geographic location and environmental exposure, is asfollows:Grade Service Life (years)Grade S1over 75Grade S240 to 75Grade S320 to 405. 9、 be pre-ceded by the words “unfading” or “semi-weathering” or“weathering” to indicate the allowable change in the originalslate color, over time, upon exposure on the roof.5.2 Standard RoofsSloping roofs utilizing a nominalthickness of316 to14 in. (4.8 to 6.4 mm), are known asstandard roofs. These s

10、hingles shall be rectangular unlessotherwise specified. These shingles shall be machine punchedor drilled for two nails located for proper headlap.5.3 Textural RoofsSloping roofs utilizing various sizes,thicknesses, textures, and colors for architectural effects, areknown as textural roofs. These sh

11、ingles shall be machinepunched or drilled for two nails located for proper headlap.5.4 Graduated RoofsSloping roofs utilizing a greaterrange of sizes, thicknesses, and exposed lengths of shingles,are known as graduated roofs. The slates are arranged on theroof so that the thickest and longest occur

Physical Requirements6.1 Slate supplied under this specif

16、ication shall conform tothe physical requirements listed in Table 1 and be no thinnerthan the thickness of the average of the test samples reportedunder Test Methods C 120.6.2 Slates with broken corners on the exposed ends shall notbe installed when either the base or leg of the right triangularpiec

17、e broken off is greater than 112 in. (38 mm). Slates withbroken corners are acceptable for cutting stock.6.3 The curvature of shingles shall not exceed18 in. in 12 in.(3 mm in 305 mm). Curved slate shall be sheared and punchedto permit it to be laid with the convex side up.6.4 “Knots” and “knurls” a

18、re rounded defects, which affectthe smoothness of split. They are acceptable on the exposedportion of the top face but on other parts will prevent closecontact of shingles. Shingles having knots or knurls on thecovered portions projecting in excess of116 in. (1.5 mm) shallnot be used if they prevent

19、 proper fit and contact.6.5 Slate shall be free from ribbons.6.6 Not more than 1 % of broken slates, including thosehaving cracks materially precluding ringing when sounded,shall be accepted.6.7 Face dimensions shall not differ from those specified bymore than18 in. (3 mm).6.8 Slates shall be trimme

20、d with right angle corners, squareto within18 in. in 12 in. (3 mm in 305 mm).7.
