Scope1.1 This specification covers the material characteristics,physical requirements, and sampling appropriate to the selec-tion of marble for general buildin

3、g and structural purposes.Refer to Guides C1242 and C1528 for the appropriate selectionand use of marble dimension stone.1.2 Dimension marble shall include stone that is sawed, cut,split, or otherwise finished or shaped into blocks, slabs or tiles,and shall specifically exclude molded, cast and arti

4、ficiallyaggregated units composed of fragments, and also crushed andbroken stone.1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. Soundness5.1 Marbles are further classified into four “Soundness”groups: A, B, C, and D. Classifications are based on theproperties encountered in fabric

9、ation and has no referencewhatsoever to comparative merit or value. Marble is classifiedby its producer.5.2 The Soundness classifications indicate what repairs maybe necessary prior to or during installation, based on standardtrade practices.5.3 The groupings A, B, C, and D, should be taken intoacco

10、unt when specifying marble, for all marbles are notsuitable for all building applications. This is particularly true ofthe comparatively fragile marbles classified under SoundnessGroups C and D, which may need additional fabrication beforeor during installation. Only Soundness Group A marble shouldb

11、e used for exterior installations, or any applications thatrequire the stone panel to resist lateral loads or to bear weightwithout reinforcement.5.3.1 The four groups are:Group ASound marbles with uniform and favorableworking qualities; containing no geological flaws, voids,spalls, cracks, open sea

12、ms, pits or other defects.Group B Marble similar in soundness to Group A, butwith less favorable working qualities; may have some minorsmall holes or voids that may require a limited amount of oneor more of the following: waxing3, sticking4, and filling5.1This specification is under the jurisdiction

It is standard practice to repair these variations byone or more of the following methods: waxing3, sticking4,filling5, cementing, or other forms of additional reinforcement.Group D Marble

17、s similar in soundness to Group C, butcontaining a larger proportion of natural faults, maximumvariations in working qualities, and requiring more of the samemethods of finishing.66. Physical Properties6.1 Marble supplied under this specification shall conformto the physical requirements prescribed

18、in Table 1.6.2 Marble for exterior dimension use shall be SoundnessGroup A stone, free of spalls, cracks, open seams, pits, or otherdefects that are likely to impair its structural integrity in itsintended use.6.3 Marble for interior use may be Soundness Group A, B,CorD.6.4 Soundness Group B and C m

19、arbles can be reinforced,filled or cemented for use on light- to medium-duty walkingsurfaces and other interior applications.6.5 Soundness Group D marbles can be reinforced, filled orcemented for use on vertical interior applications. This groupmay also be suitable for use in some light-to medium-du

20、tyinterior pedestrian surface applications.7. Sampling7.1 Samples for testing to determine the characteristics andphysical properties shall be representative of the marble to beused.8. On commercial or institutional stairways, floors, and platforms subject to heavy foot traffic, a minimum abrasion hardness of 12.0 isrecommended. Where two or more marbles are combined fo

30、r color and design effects, there should be no greater difference than 5 points in abrasion resistance.CThe supplier of the No. 60Alundum abrasive, Norton, has indicated that the formula for Norton treatment 138S has been changed. The new abrasive is currrently moreaggressive, resulting in lower abr

31、asive hardness values (Ha) than when the standard was initially established. As such, care should be taken when interpreting Havaluesfrom tests using the new abrasive, particularly with regard to currentASTM stone standard specification requirements for abrasion resistance, which were developed when

32、the original abrasive was still in use. Committee C18 is actively studying alternatives to address this issue.DAbrasion Resistance Test Method C1353 will eventually replace Test Method C241/C241M.
