And I havent had any work sin

11、ce then. Anyway, Im too old to work now. As far as Im concerned, the Development Cooperation has done nothing to help people like me. All the money has been wasted on leisure centres and luxury housing which none of us could afford even if we were working. This area is just as depressed now as it wa

12、s when the Cooperation was set up eight years ago. Now, Okay, they opened a few electronics firms, but how many people are unemployed there! My wife used to work in a news agency in the town centre but nearly all the shops had closed down. So she lost her job, too. No one around here has got money t

13、o spend anymore. Woman: Since the Development Cooperation was set up eight years ago, over 3,000 new jobs have been created here. At that time this was one of the most depressed regions in the country. When the shipyard closed down, this affected the economy of the whole area, causing many small bus

14、inesses and shops to go into liquidation. The spending power has decreased dramatically. The percentage of unemployed people was one of the highest in the country. This has greatly decreased over the last eight years, mainly because weve managed to attract new companies to the area as well as foreig

15、n investments. A large chunk of our budget has also been spent on training people in skills such as using computers in order to make them more employable. Man: Many of my staff and people used to work in the shipyard. And after a long period of unemployment in many cases we have been able to give th

16、em a training thanks to the grants of Development Cooperation. Our company has effectively created 300 new jobs in this area. And Im proud we have been able to do our bit. However, far too many people are still looking for work or have to move away in order to find jobs. I sometimes wonder what will

17、 happen to this area once the Development Cooperation ceases to exist at the end of next year. I just hope this area can continue to attract new companies. Man: Like many people in this area, I come from a family of shipbuilders. And I worked as a designer at the shipyard until it was closed ten yea

18、rs ago. Of course, I was worried about my job then, but I was amazed how easily I managed to get into a new career. I was given free training by the Development Cooperation. First, I did a basic course in computing, then my line manager sent me on a more advanced IT course. As well as me personally,

19、 I think this area has been affected enormously from the Cooperation. Several new electronics firms opened here in the last six years or so thanks to the incentive offer by the Cooperation, like Loya-nts and Grants to set up companies. Another good thing is that new housing has been built on the sit

20、e of the old shipyards: and a big new sports complex and leisure centres have just been opened. Woman: The Development Cooperation offered me training in basic computing skills. The idea.is to get more women into work because traditionally there hadnt been opportunities for women around here. Well,

21、the course was good. In fact, I did quite well on it. But the problem is out of the 30 women who did it with me, how many of them have got jobs six months later? The figures came out last week. And it turns out only six of us got work: and I only work mornings and not the work Ive been trained for.

22、The whole idea has its benefits, but it doesnt work out as planned. I think there are two reasons for that: firstly, there just arent enough jobs around here compared to the number of people who were doing courses: the other thing is that there are no childcare facilities. If my husband was working,

23、 I couldnt go out to work as well. Ive got limited experiences of other companies, because this is my first job. I knew someone who was already here and h

25、e put in a word for me and I didnt even have to do an interview. I learned the trade here and stayed. Mercifully we seem to be free of personnel problems which what seems to afflict a lot of companies. One thing, though, my own department was the only one that didnt exceed its financial limits last

26、year. I do think we ought to watch budgets. Thankfully, business is good at the moment. Weve just landed a huge contract, so we have got money to spend, but who knows. Man: After I finished university I found myself without a job. Not that worried me as I thought I got something. As I expect, you kn

27、ow, last year big firms and teams recruited new staff in the final-year students. And I had been offered one or two jobs when they came round. But I didnt fancy them. I went around after college, started knocking on doors, literally, and see if there is anything available. These people said yes. Its

28、 a good firm. I think they have everything under control. On the other hand, I disagree with some of their priorities. Their lavish hospitality, for instance, but really mean when it comes to investment, plant and equipment, which is asking for trouble. Woman: This firm is one of the leading names i

29、n my particular field, so I was pretty pleased to get a chance to come here. I was actually head-hunted, which was very flattering. It was all very secret, meetings in restaurants and other venues. It meant that I had been formally interviewed. Wonderful, as I hated interviews. Mind you, I wasnt tha

30、t surprised as I had a lot of success in my previous job. I ran into senior people from here at conferences and exhibitions, so I knew people. Now that I am here, I found something I didnt expect: namely, a company culture that was indifferent to customers, anything from not answering letters to del

31、aying refunds, its complacency resulting from lack of competition. It wont do. But I am confident I can alter this. And then I think the future is bright. Man: I wanted to teach engineering, but I ended up doing it, which is not the usual way round. Believe it or not, I failed several interviews aft

32、er I got my degree and left university. So I really practiced interview technique and also started writing to different firms, hoping to get something on the off chance, which is exactly what happened. Because this company had a vacancy, they hadnt yet advertised, and asked me to come for an intervi

33、ew, and I passed the interview. I was so nervous, I remember. I wont stay here though. They dont really seem to know what they want to sell, or if they want to sell it to you. As soon as something better turns up, I will take it. I might try working abroad and make use of my foreign languages. Man:

34、Things are very good at the moment, but with certain reservations. Its the best job I have ever had, viewing it just as a job. It is very interesting and the salary is very acceptable, I must say. Before I got the job, people in the know were saying it was an expanding field. So when I saw their adv

35、ertisement in the paper, I applied for it immediately. Now I am here. I have become aware that there seems to be too many people in charge and no one to do anything. I just told they do something about it. Everyone here is happy now, but they will step into trouble, I am sure, if they dont face to s

36、olve the problem.
