This day is a public holiday and many people have picnics and camp out on the beach. They have parties that start on December 31 and at midnight they start to make no

20、ise with whistles and rattles, car horns and church bells to ring in the New Year. New Year is a day for outdoor activities such as rodeos, picnic races and surf carnivals. Country 2: In British the custom of first footing is practiced. The first male visitor to the house after midnight is usually t

21、o bring good luck. Usually they bring a gift like money, bread or coal, which is done to ensure the family will have plenty of these things all the year to come. Country 4: January 1st is an important date in Greece because it is not only the first day of the New Year but it is also St. Basils day. 27、to Smoke? Long ago, no one in Europe smoked. The tobacco plant was unknown there. It grew in America and Christopher Columbus found it there. Later he returned to Europe and told people about tobacco. He said that the American Indians often smoked it. One way of smoking was like this. The American I

28、ndians threw some tobacco leaves on a fire. Then they put long tubes in their mouths. The other ends of the tubes were over the fire, so they were able to draw the smoke into their mouths. About the year 1560 a Frenchman, Jean Nicot, was living in Lisbon, Portugal. He was very interested in all Amer

29、ican plants. Some of them were very different from the plants of Europe. He used the leaves of the tobacco plant to cure pain. When a man had a bad pain in a leg or an arm, Nicot put tobacco leaves on the painful place and tried to cure the pain in that way. We now say that tobacco contains nicotine

30、. The word nicotine comes from this mans name. Sir Walter Raleigh was a famous man in the days of Queen Elizabeth the First. He traveled widely and learnt to smoke. Then he returned to England, but he didnt stop smoking. He used to smoke two pipes every day secretly in his room. When anyone came in,

31、 he quickly hid his pipe. A man came in and found clouds of smoke in his room. More smoke was coming from Raleighs mouth, so the man got some water and threw it over Raleigh. He believed that Raleigh was burning. He ran out of the house and told everybody about it. After this, smoking was not a secr

32、et. Raleigh had a sad life and died in 1618. He died bravely and quietly. He smoked a pipe just before his death. That is the end of Part 3.
