It was place-ism, I did not have a college degree. I did not come from a politically connected family. I had no money. So Who was going to

21、 do business with me?“ After ten months of pursuing fruitless leads, Gardner found someone willing to give him a shot. He quit his job and showed up for his appointment, only to discover his contact had been fired. No one knew who he was or why he was there. It was back to the beginning, but without

22、 steady employment. “I was doing everything I could that was legal to take care of my family- cutting grass, cleaning basements, hauling rubbish. I learned roofing. I did house painting. And I continued to pursue a career on Wall Street.“ But life remained precarious. After an argument Gardner had w

23、ith his girlfriend, someone called the police. A routine check of his license plate number turned up a backlog of unpaid parking tickets. And that led to ten days in jail. To make matters worse, while he was incarcerated, his girlfriend took their son and moved out. “I was devastated. I grew up with

24、out a father, and I had promised myself that I would never leave my son in a situation where he wouldnt know his father. Those were the most terrible days of my life. I was there with murderers and rapists, and all I could think about was: Where is my child? Will I ever see him again?“ Before landin

25、g in jail, Gardner had lined up an interview at Dean Witter, the brokerage firm. Unfortunately, the interview was scheduled for the day before he was to be released. “I begged the guard to let me make one phone call to reschedule.“ Once out of jail, Gardner went to the interview wearing all he had-t

There are two approaches to book revie

44、wing: the descriptive and the critical.A descriptive review is one in which the writer, without over-enthusiasm or exaggeration, gives the essential information about a book. This is done by description and exposition, by stating the perceived aims and purposes of the author, and by quoting striking

45、 passages from the text. A critical review is one in which the writer describes and evaluates the book, in terms of accepted literary and historical standards, and supports this evaluation with evidence from the text. The following pointers are meant to be suggestions for writing a critical review.

46、Firstly, basic requirements. Simply stated, the reviewer must know two things in order to write a critical review:the work being reviewed and the requirements of the genre to which the work belongs, such as novel, short story, biography, poetry, etc. Knowledge of the work demands not only an attempt

47、 to understand what the authors purpose is and how the component parts of the work contribute to that purpose, but also some knowledge of the author. And knowledge of the genre means understanding the art form and how it functions. Then, after that we come to what are the minimum essentials of a boo

Sufficient description should be given so that the reader, as he reads the review, will have some understanding of the authors thoughts.
