The case came to public attention following widespread media reports of the death of Xu Yuyu, an 18-year-old high school grad

Xu was reported to have lost 9,900 yuan (1,490 US dollars) of her university tuition fees to telecom fraudsters and, according to reports, died of a cardiac arrest on Aug. 19, 2016.
