Globally, 65% of degr

、adation is caused by too much animal grazing and tree clearance, constituting 35% and 30% respectively. A further 28% of global degradation is due to over-cultivation of crops. Other causes account for only 7% collectively. These causes affected different regions differently in the 1990s, with Europ

、e having as much as 9.8% of degradation due to deforestation, while the impact of this on Oceania and North America was minimal, with only 1.7% and 0.2% of land affected respectively. Europe, with the highest overall percentage of land degraded (23%), also suffered from over-cultivation (7.7%) and o

、ver-grazing (5.5%). In contrast, Oceania had 13% of degraded farmland and this was mainly due to over-grazing (11.3%). North America had a lower proportion of degraded land at only 5%, and the main causes of this were over-cultivation (3.3%) and, to a lesser extent, over-grazing (1.5%). Overall, it

、is clear that Europe suffered more from farmland degradation than the other regions, and the main causes there were deforestation and over-cultivation. 【知识模块】 写作 2 【正确答案】 The graph shows how the amount of water used worldwide changed between 1900 and 2000. Throughout the century, the largest quantit

、y of water was used for agricultural purposes, and this increased dramatically from about 500 km3 to around 3,000 km3 in the year 2000. Water used in the industrial and domestic sectors also increased, but consumption was minimal until mid-century. From 1950 onwards, industrial use grew steadily to

、just over 1,000 km3, while domestic use rose more slowly to only 300 km3, both far below the levels of consumption by agriculture. The table illustrates the differences in agricultural consumption in some areas of the world by contrasting the amount of irrigated land in Brazil (26,500 km2) with that

、 in the D.R.C (100 km2). This means that a huge amount of water was used in agriculture in Brazil, and this is reflected in the figures for water consumption per person: 395 m3 compared with only 8 m3 in the Congo. With a population of 176 million, the figures for Brazil indicate how high agricultur

、al water consumption can be in some countries. 【知识模块】 写作 3 【正确答案】 The first diagram shows that there are four main stages in the life of the silkworm. First of all, eggs are produced by the moth and it takes ten days for each egg to become a silkworm larva that feeds on mulberry leaves. This stage l

、asts for up to six weeks until the larva produces a cocoon of silk thread around itself. After a period of about three weeks, the adult moths eventually emerge from these cocoons and the life cycle begins again. The cocoons are the raw material used for the production of silk cloth. Once selected, t

、hey are boiled in water and the threads can be separated in the unwinding stage. Each thread is between 300 and 900 meters long, which means they can be twisted together, dyed and then used to produce cloth in the weaving stage. Overall, the diagrams show that the cocoon stage of the silkworm can be

、 used to produce silk cloth through a very simple process. 【知识模块】 写作 4 【正确答案】 The diagram demonstrates how rainwater is recycled. To begin with, rain falls upon a roof and is channeled into the guttering, where it drains into a water filtration system commonly a net or mesh containing activated carb

、on, or even plain old charcoal from the barbeque. Once filtered for debris, such as leaves or dead insects, the water travels into a water storage tank, where it is held before treatment. In the water treatment stage, the water is allowed to flow into a contained area where chemicals are added to re

、move any impurities. Following this, the water is deemed safe for drinking, and is returned to the water system, where it coincidentally ends up in the same house upon which the rain fell in the beginning. Overall, the process of recycling rainwater is not only very simple and efficient, as the diagram shows, but also fundamentally important for a habitable environment. 【知识模块】 写作
