The value of the dollar increased slightly to 2.3 per pound in 1974 before returning to the 2.4 level

5、in 1975. Then, there was a sharp increase in the value of the dollar to 1.6 per pound in 1977. The US dollar then gradually lost value until, in 1980, it was at the rate of 2.3 to the pound. The dollar continued to appreciate in value at a more gradual pace until it stood at 1.2 dollars per pound in 1985, its highest rate over the period 1973 to 1988. This is worse for young people because they have so long to go before the end of their working lives, whereas many people who lose their jobs when they are approaching retirement age s

If a young person is then unemployed for years afterwards, they find it increasingly difficu

Young, unemployed people are more likely to use illegal drugs and commit other crimes in order to fund their habit. This is detrimental to the individual and to society. Habitual drug users a

12、re far less likely to be employed because the use of drugs makes them far less reliable employees. Higher crime rates make people feel less safe and require a larger police force with a larger budget to deal with it. A key problem of unemployment is that it wastes resources. Unemployed people do not

13、 contribute to the economy by paying taxes. If a country has a welfare system, such as Britain does, then unemployed people take money from the budget that could be used in other ways or could result in tax reductions for individuals and companies. The situation is worse with youth unemployment because they could be unemployed for a very long period. In conclusion, unemployment among young people causes a variety of problems for both the individual and for society in general.
