Firstly, looking at the owned accommodation, we can clearly see that in 1918 there were only a li

5、ttle more than 20% of people. This grew steadily until 2001, where it peaked over more than triple what it started at: a little less than 70%. The final year of the chart shows this value at roughly 65%. Moving on to the rented accommodation, these figures show a continual decline from 1918 to 2001,

6、 with approximately 77% and 31% respectively. Again, in 2001, the trend reversed and went up slightly to finish at 35% in 2011. In summary, over the last hundred years or so it is shown that more people now own their houses whereas renting was the most popular choice at the beginning of the 20th cen

When you must speak a language that isnt your own it can cause severe social and practical conundrums. I firmly believe that, ev

8、en if you can speak a little of the local language, there will always be issues. Firstly, looking at the social side of things, it can be very difficult to communicate with others, therefore the ability to make friends and other social connections will also be incredibly hard. A good example of this

9、 is when I went to England for a summer camp to help me improve my English. I got there and there were no other Chinese speakers around. Because of this, I didnt really make that many new friends, although there was one girl I liked and we tried really hard to chat with other, sometimes successfully

10、, sometimes not. Moving on to the practical issues, the most obvious is getting around. Without some knowledge of the area and the ability to ask for directions, it would be very easy to become disoriented and lost. The other major implication would be the basic necessities: a place to stay, food an

11、d so on, not to mention the cultural differences and issues that can arise. A solution to this, one that many Chinese actually do, is to travel in group with a translator when on holiday, or go to a place with other Chinese speakers, if they are planning to stay for a long time. Overall, I thoroughl

12、y agree with the statement above, and although there are solutions to nearly any problem that presents itself, overcoming these in itself can be considered social and practical issues. (281 words ) 2 To live as an expat in a country where ones native language is not spoken can be quite daunting. In

13、fact, many misadventures and awkward situations often result from being forced to speak a foreign language, and thus I concur with the statement. It is highly likely that misunderstandings between local people and expat residents will occur in social situations. This is especially true with language

14、s that employ words with many meanings but similar pronunciations. For example, Chinese uses a tonal system, where a single word, spoken with a different tone, can have a multitude of definitions. To people whose native tongues have no tonal aspect, this can be very difficult to master, and can caus

15、e embarrassing situations where one accidentally says something offensive without meaning to. In the same vein, some local people may take advantage of foreign visitors who do not have a full grasp of the language. If they are unable to converse regularly with people, or at least understand the majo

16、rity of what people are saying, the locals may conspire to cheat them, for example, on the price of goods, if none is listed, or perhaps sell goods that are not authentic. For some, this need to learn a new language is a challenge readily accepted, a new experience to be mastered and then boasted of

17、 to their friends later. However, for those who have vital work to do, or are not staying long, having to speak the language of a foreign land is troublesome and not conducive to a productive experience. In sum, living in a country where one must speak a foreign language leads to all manner of misunderstandings and embarrassing situations, and can even affect ones livelihood in the worst cases. Thus, if one truly wishes to live as an expat in a place where ones native language is not common, one should make sure to have a firm grasp of the local language first. (322 words)
