The chart shows that the percentage of men who smoked was highest in China (67%). Indonesia had the second-highest percentage (58%) and Bangladesh had the third-highest (54%). Simila

5、r percentages of men smoked in Japan and India (47% and 46% respectively). In the Philippines, 41% of men smoked and in Vietnam the percentage was 35%. The USA had the lowest percentage of male smokers at 24%. The highest percentage of female smokers was in Bangladesh (27%), followed by the USA (19%

6、) and India (17%). 14% of Japanese women were smokers. The other four countries had much lower percentages of female smokers. In the Philippines, 8% of women smoked. In Indonesia, the figure was 4%. In China, the percentage was 3% and the lowest percentage was in Vietnam 2%. Overall, the table shows

Others, usually those with an interest in the subject, believe that history can help us to understand our current global

9、situation. I agree with the latter group. People who do not think that history can tell us much suggest that the situation nowadays is completely different to the situation in the poet. They may say that modern inventions such as aircraft and computers mean that what happened before cannot be compar

10、ed to what is happening now. They may also say that people nowadays are different to people in the poet. Opponents of this point of view say that these suggestions are incorrect. They note that history is often the story of struggles between different groups, tribes, countries or alliances or even p

11、hilosophies and that therefore similarities can easily be found. For example, there is now peace in Europe, but we can still see how the various members of the European Union try to get other member countries to do what they want. France continues to look more at Europe whilst Britain tends to look

12、more at her relationship with the USA. Other situations in the modern world are clearly directly related to historical events. The Arab-Israeli problem is a perfect example. The Jews claim that they were forced out of Palestine and now believe that they have a right to live there and have their own

The Arabs claim that they have lived in this area for at least as long as the Jews and were a majority until the state of Israel was established without their permission in the 20th century. To conclude, I think it is quite clear that history has much to tell us and that a knowledge of history is necessary for a full understanding of the present world.
