Scope*1.1 This specification covers brick made principally fromsand a

3、nd lime and intended for use in brick masonry. Twogrades of brick are covered:1.1.1 Grade SWBrick intended for use where exposed totemperature below freezing in the presence of moisture.NOTE 1As a typical example, brick used for foundation courses andparapets in the northeastern quarter of the Unite

4、d States should conformto Grade SW.1.1.2 Grade MWBrick intended for use where exposed totemperature below freezing but unlikely to be saturated withwater.NOTE 2As a typical example, brick exposed in the face of the wallother than parapet or foundations, or brick intended for structures locatedin reg

5、ions of the United States characterized by less severe frost action orby drier climate than is found in the northeastern quarter of the UnitedStates should conform to Grade MW.1.1.3 When the term brick is used in this specification, it isunderstood to mean brick or solid masonry units.1.2 If brick h

6、aving a particular color, texture, finish, oruniformity is desired, these features shall be specified sepa-rately by the purchaser.1.3 The text of this standard references notes and footnoteswhich provide explanatory material. 9、e specified, as prescribed in Table 1.4.2 Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, brick ofGrades SW and MW shall be accepted. Grade SW shall beaccepted in lieu of Grade MW.5. Dimensions and Permissible Variations5.1 The size of brick shall be as specified by the purchaserand the average size of

10、 brick furnished shall approximate thesize specified in the invitation for bids.5.2 No overall dimension (width, height, and length) shalldiffer by more than 618 in. (3.2 mm) from the specifiedstandard dimension. The width requirement does not apply totextured finishes such as split or rocked faces.

11、 Standarddimensions of units are the manufacturers designated dimen-sions.6. Finish and Appearance6.1 All units shall be sound and free of cracks or otherdefects that interfere with the proper placement of the unit orsignificantly impair the strength or permanence of the construc-tion. 15、 delivery are not groundsfor rejection.6.2 Where units are to be used in exposed wall construction,the face or faces that are to be exposed shall not show chips orcracks not otherwise permitted or other imperfections, whenviewed from a distance of not less than 20 ft (6.1 m) underdiffused light.6.2.

16、1 Five percent of a shipment containing chips, not largerthan12 in. (12.7 mm) in any dimension, or cracks not widerthan 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) and not longer than 25 % of the nominalheight of the unit is permitted.6.3 The color and texture shall be specified by the purchaser.The finished surface that wil

17、l be exposed in place shallconform to an approved sample consisting of not less than fourunits, representing the range of color and texture specified.7. Methods of Sampling and Testing7.1 The purchaser or the purchasers authorized representa-tive shall be accorded proper facilities to inspect and sa

18、mplethe units at the place of manufacture from the lots ready fordelivery.7.2 Compressive strength, absorption, density, and dimen-sional tolerances shall be based on tests of calcium silicatebrick of any configuration or dimensions made with the samematerials, mix design, manufacturing process, and

19、 curingmethod, conducted in accordance with Test Methods C140 andwithin 12 months of production of the units.8. Compliance8.1 If a sample fails to conform to the specifiedrequirements, the manufacturer shall be permitted to removeunits from the shipment. A new sample shall be selected by thepurchase

20、r from remaining units from the shipment with asimilar configuration and dimension and tested at the expenseof the manufacturer. If the second sample meets the specifiedrequirements, the remaining portion of the shipment repre-sented by the sample meets the specified requirements. If thesecond sampl

21、e fails to meet the specified requirements, theremaining portion of the shipment represented by the samplefails to meet the specified requirements.9.
