Terminology3.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 exterior finishthe shingle, lap, or panel siding ma-terial, masonry veneer, or stucco applied over the sheathing asa protective, decorative exterior finish of the building.3.1.2 fastenersnails, staples, or screws used

7、 for applica-tion of the sheathing.3.1.3 framing membersthose portions of the studs, head-ers, bracing, and blocking which serve to receive the sheathing.Framing members can be wood or metal.3.1.4 regular wall sheathingdescribed in DefinitionsD 1554 and Specification C 208. It is 4 ft (1.22 m) wide

When installed in accordancewith Section 7, it is considered a structural sheathing providingadequate racking resistance. It is 4 ft (1.22 m) wide

9、 and12 in.(12.7 mm) or2532 in. (19.8 mm) in thickness with square-cutedges on all sides.3.1.6 vertical applicationsheathing applied with the longedges parallel to the studs.4. Significance and Use4.1 This standard provides recommendations for the instal-lation in a safe and effective manner. Actual

10、conditions mayvary greatly, and additional care should be taken to ensure asafe and effective installation.4.2 This standard presents requirements that are general innature and considered practical. They are not intended asspecific recommendations. The user should consult the manu-facturer for recom

11、mended application methods and procedures.4.3 This standard does not address the applicability ofregulatory limitations. This is the responsibility of the user.5. Materials5.1 Sheathing shall conform to ANSI/AHA A194.1 andSpecification C 208.5.2 Nails for application of sheathing to wood framing sha

(0.41 m) or 24 in. (0.61 m)on center depending on code requirements.6. Storage6.1 Sheathing shall be stored

18、 flat, and supported and pro-tected from direct contact with the ground. Sheathing shall notbe stored in a heated warehouse and shall be allowed to cometo equilibrium at job site conditions prior to application.Sheathing should be protected from rain prior to installation.7. Application (see Table 2

19、)7.1 Vertical Application (see Fig. 1)Apply 4-ft (1.22-m)wide by12-in. (12.7-mm) or by2532-in. (19.8-mm) sheathingvertically with long edges parallel to the vertical studs. Centerall joints over the framing members with a18-in. (3.18-mm)gap between edges. Leave a18-in. gap at doors, windows, andhori

20、zontal joints. Sheathing should extend from sill to plate. Ifnot, headers for adequate nailing should be provided at allhorizontal joints. Apply fasteners for12-in. or2532-in. materialusing roofing nails, common nails (5.2) or staples (5.3) forwood framing and screws (5.4) for metal framing. Applyfa

21、steners to intermediate framing members first. For woodframing, space fasteners 6 in. (152 mm) (Note 1) on center.Apply perimeter fasteners 3 in. (76 mm) (Note 1) on center anda minimum of38 in. (9.5 mm) from the edge. Apply staples(5.3) vertically with the crown parallel to the framing member.Drive

22、 fasteners flush with the sheathing surface, but do notcountersink. For metal framing, space the fasteners 5 in. (127mm) around the perimeter of the sheets and 10 in. (254 mm)into intermediate framing.NOTE 1When bracing strength is provided separately, intermediatefasteners may be 8 in. (203 mm) on

General Recommendations for Installing ExteriorFinishes Over Sheathing8.1 Regular and Structural Wall Sheathing Fasten furringstrips, stucco bases, etc., through the sheathing to the framing.8.1.1 Horizontal Lap SidingApply directly over thes

31、rs recommendations.8.1.5 Wood ShinglesApply furring strips (nominal 1 by 2in.) or larger horizontally over the sheathing and secure to eachstud. Nails must be long enough to penetrate at least 1 in. (25.4mm) into the wood framing. Space the furring strips the samedistance, center to center, as the w

32、eather exposure of theshingles. Nail shingles to the furring strips in accordance withthe shingle manufacturers specifications.8.1.6 StuccoCover the entire sheathing surface with acontinuous layer of asphalt-impregnated, water-repellent paperweighing at least 10 lb/100 ft2(0.49 kg/m2). An alternativ

33、e isClass D building paper meeting Federal Specification UU-B-790-A or an equivalent weather resistant barrier. Do not use avapor barrier such as coated roofing membrane. Head and sidelaps should be at least 4 in. (101.6 mm). Self-furring metal lathstucco bases (3.4 lb/yd2) (1.84 kg/m2) or equivalen

34、t may beapplied directly over the building paper. If necessary, use stripsof wood lath to make certain that there is at least38 in. (9.5mm) of clear space between the stucco base and the sheathing.Non-furring stucco bases such as diamond mesh metal lathshould be nailed to nominal 1 by 2-in. wood fur

35、ring stripsapplied vertically over the studs. All nailing of both furringstrips and stucco base should be done with nails or staples thatare long enough to extend through the sheathing and at least 1in. (25.4 mm) into the wood framing.8.1.7 Masonry VeneerAttach metal ties for masonry ve-neer over th

36、e sheathing with nails that penetrate at least34 in. (19.0 mm) into the wood framing members. At least 1 in.(25.4 mm) of clear space should be left between the sheathingand the back of the veneer.9.
