When material from two or more sources is tobe blended to produce a grading to meet requirements in otherspecifications for bituminous paving mixtures, the gradingrequirements of Table 1 of this spe

Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 For defining aggregate types, see Descriptive Nomen-clature C 294, and Terminology D8and C 125.3.1.2 ex

Ordering Information4.1 Orders for material under this specification shall includethe following:4.1.1 This specif

10、ication designation including year,4.1.2 Grading (6.2 and Table 1), or alternative gradingdesignated by the purchaser,4.1.3 Supplementary requirement for sulfate soundness, ifrequired, including salt to be used (See S1), and4.1.4 Any exceptions or additions to this specification.5. General Character

11、istics5.1 Fine aggregate is aggregate passing the 9.5-mm (38-in.)sieve and almost entirely passing the 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve. Itshall consist of natural sand; or of manufactured fine aggregatefrom crushed stone, crushed blastfurnace slag, or crushedgravel; or crushed or uncrushed expanded shale, exp

12、andedclay, or expanded slate; or combinations thereof. It shall consistof hard, tough grains, free of injurious amounts of clay, loam,or other deleterious substances.6. Physical Properties6.1 To determine conformance to this specification, eachvalue for grading (and sulfate soundness, when required)

13、 shallbe rounded to the nearest 1 %, and each value for the plasticityindex shall be rounded to the nearest 0.1 unit, both inaccordance with the rounding-off method of Practice E29.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D04 on Roadand Paving Materials and is the direct respo

16、conform tothe grading in Table 1 for the Grading Number specified in theorder, or other grading designated by the purchaser.6.3 Grading Variability LimitsFor continuing shipmentsof fine aggregate from a given source, the fineness modulusshall not vary more than 0.25 from the base fineness modulus.Th

17、e base fineness modulus shall be that value that is typical ofthe source, and shall be determined from previous tests, or if noprevious tests exist, from the average of the fineness modulusvalues for the first ten samples (or all preceding samples if lessthan ten) on the order. The base fineness mod

18、ulus shall not bechanged except when approved by the purchaser.NOTE 2The proportioning of a bituminous mixture may be dependenton the fineness modulus of the fine aggregate to be used. Therefore, whenit appears that the base fineness modulus is considerably different from thevalue used in the design

19、 of the bituminous mixture, a suitable adjustmentin the mixture may be necessary.6.4 Plasticity IndexThe plasticity index of the fractionpassing the 425-m (No. 40) sieve shall not exceed 4.0.7. Methods of Sampling and Testing7.1 The aggregate shall be sampled and the propertiesenumerated in this spe

20、cification shall be determined in accor-dance with the following ASTM methods:7.1.1 SamplingPractice D75,7.1.2 Random SamplingPractice D 3665,7.1.3 GradingTest Method C 136 and Test Method C117,Procedure A,7.1.4 Fineness ModulusTest Method C 136, and7.1.5 Plasticity IndexTest Method D 4318.8. Sulfate SoundnessS1.1 The fine aggregate, when subjected to 5 cycles of thesoundness test i

22、n accordance with Test Method C88, shallhave a weighted loss of not more than 15 % when sodiumsulfate is used or 20 % when magnesium sulfate is used. If thesalt to be used is not stated by the purchaser, the fine aggregateshall be acceptable if it meets the requirements when testedwith either salt.T
