Scope1.1 This practice covers procedures for the sampling anddata reporting of bulk shipments of carbon black in three-compartment hopper rail

3、cars and compartmented bulk hoppertrailers.NOTE 1The tests to be made on the samples obtained by this practice,how many samples are taken, where they are taken, and what statisticalvalues (if any) to report shall be determined by agreement between thepurchaser and the manufacturer. This practice giv

4、es guidance for use indeveloping such agreements or for use when no formal agreement exists.The specific details of each procedure are described in appropriate ASTMtest methods used for testing carbon black.NOTE 2Some purchasers or manufacturers may consider FlexibleIntermediate Bulk Containers (FIB

Significance and Use3.1 Sampling of bulk shipments of carbon blacks is ofutmost importance since the location and number of samplestaken by different laboratories can have a significant effec

8、t onthe agreement of test values obtained. This practice is for usein obtaining representative samples of carbon black in eachcompartment or in the entire hopper car or hopper truck. Thesesamples may be used to ascertain the average quality or theuniformity of a shipment, or both.4. Sampling Procedu

9、re4.1 Withdraw approximatelya4dm3(1 gal) sample fromeach sample port, after first withdrawing at least 4 dm3(1 gal)of carbon black from each port and discarding it. Sample portsare located on each side of each compartment in a three-compartment bulk hopper rail car and on one side of a hoppertruck.4

10、.2 If sampling from the top ports of a hopper car or hoppertruck, approximately 150 mm (6 in.) of surface material shouldbe raked aside before collecting approximately 4 dm3(1 gal)for testing.4.3 Asample thief may be used to sample from the top portsof a hopper car or hopper truck. The thief must be

11、 able tosample at least 150 mm (6 in.) below the surface. Collectapproximately 4 dm3(1 gal) for testing.4.4 If sampling a hopper car or hopper truck during unload-ing it is recommended that three samples be collected fortesting from each compartment: one at the beginning ofunloading, one at approxim

12、ately the middle of unloading, andone near the end of unloading. The sample size should beapproximately 4 dm3(1 gal).4.5 If sampling a hopper car or hopper truck during loadingit is recommended that three samples be collected for testingfrom each compartment: one at the beginning of loading, oneat a

13、pproximately the middle of loading and one near the end ofloading. The sample size should be approximately 4 dm3(1 gal).4.6 Samples collected as described in 4.1-4.5 may be testedsingly or composited. See Practice D5817 for guidance onpreparing composited samples. When disputed test results ariserea

14、sonable efforts should be made for all parties to test samplestaken from the same location.5. Sample Preparation and Handling5.1 Store the samples in airtight containers until the mate-rials are needed for sample preparation or testing. Hold anyexcess material in airtight containers for possible fol

18、epen-dently, pass each sample through a single-stage riffle-typesample splitter at least twice in order to prevent stratification.See Practice D5817. This is particularly important if pelletquality tests are to be made on the sample.5.4 If individual samples are composited, pass them througha single

19、-stage riffle-type sample splitter at least three times. SeePractice D5817.5.5 Composite samples should be tested if simply theaverage value of a given property of the shipment is to bedetermined.5.6 Individual samples shall be tested if average and rangeor sample standard deviation values for a giv

20、en property of theshipment are to be determined.6. Report6.1 Report the following information:6.1.1 Number of individual samples and their location.6.1.2 Average value, if composite samples were tested.6.1.3 Individual values, average, and range or sample stan-dard deviation, if individual samples w
