3、 This classification system covers requirements for cellulose acetate thermoplastic compounds plasticized with either diethylphthalate or dimethyl phthalate and are suitable for injection molding and extrusion. These compounds have an acetyl contentbetween 39 and 40 %. It does not include materials

4、compounded for special application. Cellulosic plastic materials, beingthermoplastic, are reprocessable and recyclable. This classification system allows for the use of those cellulosic materials, providedthat all specific requirements of this classification system are met.1.2 The properties include

5、d in this classification system are those required to identify the compositions covered. Otherrequirements necessary to identify particular characteristics important to specialized applications are specified by using the suffixesas given in Section 5.1.3 This classification system and subsequent lin

6、e call out (specification) are intended to provide a means of calling out plasticmaterials used in the fabrication of end items or parts. It is not intended for the selection of materials. Material selection can bemade by those having expertise in the plastic field only after careful consideration o

7、f the design and performance required of thepart, environment to which it will be exposed, fabrication process to be employed, costs involved, and inherent properties of thematerial other than those covered by this classification system.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standar

Classification4.1 This classification system covers the following groups, classes, and grades (see Table CA):

Materials and Manufacture6.1 Materials supplied shall be as uniform in composition and size, and as free of contamination as can be achi

Physical Requirements7.1 Test specimens of the material shall conform to the requirements prescribed in Table CA.7.2 Molded specimens, for

28、 those tests requiring them, shall be prepared in accordance with Section 10.7.3 Conformance to the requirements of this classification system shall be determined in accordance with Section 11.8. Sampling8.1 Sampling shall be statistically adequate to satisfy the requirements of 12.4.8.2 A batch or

29、lot shall be constituted as a unit of manufacture as prepared for shipment and can consist of a blend of two ormore “production runs.”9. Number of Tests9.1 Routine testing of each batch or lot shall be limited to properties designated in Table CA of this classification system.9.2 One set of samples

30、for those tests that are designated (Section 12) shall be considered sufficient for testing the batch or lot.The average results from those samples shall comply with the requirements prescribed in this classification system.10. Specimen Preparation10.1 Physical property requirements in Table CA are

31、based on injection molded specimens 3.2 mm thick. Specimens machinedfrom compression-molded blanks or extruded strips can be used, provided it can be shown that the results are comparable.10.2 Prior to molding cellulose acetate, dry the material to a moisture content of 0.2 % or less. The primary re

32、ason for dryingthe material is to eliminate visual defects such as surface imperfections and bubbles. Material spread in a tray to a maximum depthof 50 mm and exposed in a circulating-air oven at 75 to 90C for 3 h is recommended. Formulations containing either very lowor very high levels of plastici

33、zer can require slightly higher or lower drying temperatures respectively. Control the injectionmolding cycles in accordance with Practice D3641, using a melt temperature 25 to 35C above the “cold point.” (The “cold point”is the lowest melt temperature at which it is possible to obtain a full shot w

34、hen all other operating variables are held constant withinthe normal operating range.) Mold temperatures between 35 and 60C have been found desirable.As a rule, thin-section moldingsand higher hardness materials (lower plasticizer content) require higher mold temperatures.10.3 Test specimens injecti

35、on molded from cellulosic materials are subject to “overpacking” if the gate size is too large, andthis can result in brittleness in the gate area as well as throughout the entire specimen. A gate size 1.5 mm square has been foundto produce satisfactory test specimens.11. Test Methods11.1 Determine

Inspection and Certification12.1 Inspection and certification of the material supplied with reference to a specification based on this classification systemshall be for

43、conformance to the requirements specified herein.12.2 Lot-acceptance inspection shall be the basis on which acceptance or rejection of the lot is made. The lot-acceptanceinspection shall consist of plasticizer content determination (see Table CA, Footnote 1) and color as specified in 6.3.12.3 Period

44、ic check inspection with reference to a specification based on this classification system shall consist of the tests forall requirements of the material under the specification. Inspection frequency shall be adequate to ensure that the material iscertifiable in accordance with 12.4.12.4 Certificatio

45、n shall be that the material was manufactured by a process in statistical control, sampled, tested, and inspectedin accordance with this classification system and that the average values for the lot meet the requirements of the classificationsystem (line call out).12.5 Areport of test results shall

46、be furnished when requested. The report shall consist of results of the lot acceptance inspectionfor the shipment, the results of the most recent periodic-check inspection, and the percent by weight of recycled plastic, as definedin Guide D7209, if requested.NOTE 5TheASTM publication Manual on Prese
