Scope1.1 This practice covers the determination of the relativeservice life of fluid traffic marking materials suc

Materials under test areapplied under prescribed conditions and periodic observationsare made using prescribed performance criteria.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as

Significance and Use3.1 This practice is an accelerated evaluation o

6、f beadretention and wear characteristics of fluid traffic markingmaterials. It is used to determine the useful life of suchmarkings in the field. The same procedures are applicable toevaluating longitudinal lines to determine service life.4. Type and Location of Pavement for Tests4.1 Select sections

7、 where traffic is moderate and free-rollingwith no grades, curves, intersections, or access points nearenough to cause excessive braking or turning movements,where wear is uniform with full exposure to the sun throughoutdaylight hours, and there is good drainage. Select surfaces thatare representati

8、ve of the pavements upon which the fluid trafficmarking material will be used in practice. Such surfacesinclude portland cement concrete, sheet asphalt, bituminousconcrete, rock asphalt, and bituminous surface treatment.5. Conditions at Time of Application5.1 Clean the test area thoroughly of all fo

9、reign material. Donot apply traffic paint when the pavement surface is damp orwet nor when the pavement temperature is below 10C (50F).Application between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. is recommended.During application record air and pavement temperaturehourly.6. Measurement of Wet Film Thickness6.1 To aid in

10、obtaining the correct film thickness, a length ofroofing paper placed by the side of the road can be used. Placea rigid metal test panel on the roofing paper and in the path ofthe test line. A 300 by 300-mm (12 by 12-in.) metal panel 1.5mm (116 in.) in thickness is satisfactory. Immediately after th

11、etest line is applied by the motorized striper, read the wet filmthickness. If the wet film thickness is not satisfactory, adjust thespray pressure and repeat until the target wet film thickness isattained. It is important that no glass beads or other interferingmaterials be present that would give

12、a false wet film reading.When the wet film thickness is correct, apply a test line acrossa tared metal panel and weigh immediately. A balance must beimmediately available and be thoroughly shielded from windas well as be of 1500-g capacity with 0.1 g or better sensitivity.As a basis for determinatio

13、n of glass bead application (7.1) theweight of a paint line 100 by 300 mm (4 by 12 in.) Measurement of Glass Beads7.1 After

14、the completion of 6.1, apply another test line to atared panel with the motorized striper, this time also adding theglass beads, and weigh immediately. 18、. Application Procedure8.1 Apply the test stripes 100 mm (4 in.) in width andtransversely on the road. At the option of the purchaser, the teststripes may be applied to the pavement at an angle of 45 to thedirection of the traffic, or longitudinally in each wheel path, inorder to increase the area o

19、f contact with traffic.8.2 Apply test stripes (trained personnel under the supervi-sion of the purchaser) by using a pavement-marking machinesimilar to the production pavement marking equipment. Applythe test stripes to at least two sections of each road surfaceselected to ensure against undetected

20、road surface problems.When more than one specimen is tested at more than onelocation, change the sequence of placement to minimize theeffect of time of day and time period before the test deck isopened to traffic.8.3 Apply at least two lines of each specimen in eachsection for better statistical rel

21、iability. A tared panel as used inthe measurement of glass beads (see 7.1) should be placedbetween the wheel track of one lines application as a doublecheck for material and glass bead application rates. Weightsbetween this reading and that found in 7.1 should agree within0.5 g. The purchaser may wi

22、sh to place another smaller panelbetween the wheel tracks to retain for future reference.8.4 The road surface test lines should have a wet filmthickness within 60.5 mil of that required by the purchaser.NOTE 1If no wet film thickness is specified, 15.0 mil is recom-mended.8.5 A fluid marking materia

23、l with which the purchaser hashad considerable production experience is included in the testseries as a control.8.6 Glass beads are placed in the paint film within 60.5lb/gal of that required by the purchaser. All glass beads aresupplied by the purchaser.NOTE 2If no bead application rate is specifie

24、d, 6.0 lb/gal of paint isrecommended.9. Performance Criteria9.1 Auto-No-Track TimeThe auto no-track time is deter-mined by passing over the freshly applied line in a simulatedpassing maneuver with a standard size passenger car withregular treads (no snow treads). A line showing no visualpick-up and

25、redeposition of the materials onto the pavementsurface when viewed from a distance of 15 m (50 ft) in thehighway direction is considered as showing no pick-up andconforming to the drying time requirements.9.1.1 The test line is applied at the same temperature, thesame wet film thickness, and the sam

26、e rate of glass beads aswill be specified by the purchaser in production application.9.1.2 The no-track maximum time is measured when thepavement temperature is from 15 to 50C (60 to 120F) andunder local humidity conditions, providing that the pavement isdry.NOTE 3A laboratory no-track test is descr

27、ibed in Test Method D 711.This test is a laboratory control test and has little or no correlation withfield results. Some paints have a tendency to skin over rapidly allowingthe specimen to meet the maximum specified time for the laboratory test,but would be unsatisfactory at that time on a road sur

28、face.9.2 AppearanceThe impression of the observer of thegeneral condition of the test lines when viewed without anydetailed inspection, from a distance of at least 10 ft. It is ameasure of satisfactory or unsatisfactory appeal to the ob-server. It includes a comparison of the color of the surfaceund

29、er consideration with the original color, taking into accountchanges due to yellowing, bleeding, darkening, fading, dirtcollection, mold growth, etc. This determination is made ineach wheel track in an area extending 229 mm (9 in.) each sideof the point of greatest wear. The appearance is rated eith

30、eracceptable or unacceptable.9.3 DurabilityThe durability is equal to one tenth of thepercentages of material remaining on the pavement (whenexamined by the unaided eye). This determination is made ineach wheel track in an area extending 229 mm (9 in.) each sideof the point of greatest wear. The per

31、cent of paint remaining onthe pavement is considered as the percent of the prescribed areaof test stripe in which the substrate is not exposed. Make theevaluations in accordance with Test Method D 913.NOTE 4In the absence of a specification by the purchaser, failure shallbe a rating less than 4 (les

32、s than 40 % material remaining on thepavement).9.4 Night VisibilityNight visibility designates the appar-ent brightness when examined at night under tungsten illumi-nation from the side of the road, with eye and light sourceseparated by 40 mm (112 in.) that corresponds to an observa-tion angle of ap

33、proximately12 . Night visibility determina-tions are made in the wheel track areas used for ratingdurability, and are based on a factor of 10 for an unexposedstandard panel placed next to the test stripe and 0 for noapparent brightness.NOTE 5In the absence of a specification by the purchaser, failur

34、e shallbe a rating less than 4.NOTE 6A new test method for night visibility using a retro-reflectometer is being developed which is expected to have much greaterprecision.9.5 Length of Useful LifeThe length of useful life isdetermined by the number of days of duration between the datethe sample was

35、applied to the road surface and the date any oneof the designated measurements falls below the specifiedminimum rating.10. Evaluation Procedure10.1 Make periodic inspections of the test sections inaccordance with 9.2, 9.3, and 9.4. Record at each inspection thegeneral daytime appearance (including c

36、olor), film condition,and night visibility (retro-reflectance).10.2 Inspect the test lines at regular monthly intervals. Asthe test lines approach failure, they should be evaluated everyD 713 90 (2004)22 weeks (weather permitting). The test lines must be evaluateduntil failure. Different types of tr

37、affic paint and markings do notwear out in a linear manner. Hence, it is not possible toextrapolate to failure some intermediate data. The winterseason is also a must when evaluating test lines.11. Calculation11.1 Make cost calculations as follows:C 5 M/L 3 F (3)where:C = cost per foot per day of us

38、eful life,M = cost of paint per gallon,L = length of useful life in days as previously observed,andF = feet per gallon actually applied.NOTE 7The cost of the glass beads is usually not included in thecalculation because it will be a constant when comparing the relativeperformance of a specified clas

Various types of paints and otherfluid marking materials, however, can have different bead wetting char-acteristics, and beads with different wetting characteristics also areavailable, either of which could influence the useful life of the line. Whentesting more than one type of material

40、 or one type of bead, the optimumcost/performance may be at a different bead application rate than thatrecommended in 8.6.11.2 To determine the relative performance of the differentfluid traffic marking materials during the course of the test, thefollowing weighted rating, R, can be used:R 5 0.30A 1
