Significance and Use4.1 Solvents in a traffic paint may cause bleeding ofpavement constituents into the traffic marking, thereby render-ing the traffic marking less effective as a lane or directionalindicator. This practice describes how to prepare a panel of thecoating to be t

9、ested and a reference panel coated with a specificsolventborne traffic paint to be used as a control for evaluation.4.2 This practice can be particularly useful for evaluation ofsolventborne traffic paints, but it may also be used for othertypes of traffic markings including waterborne traffic paint

10、s.4.3 Two basic procedures are described for measuring theamount of bleeding. The procedure used shall be agreed uponby the purchaser and seller.5. Apparatus5.1 Film ApplicatorA conventional type drawdown gagethat casts a film having a minimum width of 50 mm (2 in.) andan approximate wet thickness o

11、f 380 m (15 mils) (using anapplicator clearance of approximately 760 m (30 mils).5.2 Test Panel for Coal-Tar SubstrateA 127 by 254-mm(5 by 10-in.) piece cut from a standard roll of so-called “6.8-kg(15-lb) coal-tar saturated heat resistant or rag felt.” Unlessotherwise specified, use a Specification

12、 D227 coal tar saturatedfelt.5.3 Test Panel for Asphalt SubstrateA 127 by 254-mm (5by 10-in.) piece cut from a standard roll of 6.8-kg (15-lb)asphalt-saturated felt. Unless otherwise specified, use a Speci-fication D226 (Type 1) asphalt saturated felt.5.4 Paint Composition for Use as a ControlThe pa

Preparation of Test Panels6.1 Cut 125 by 255 mm (5 by 10 in.) pieces from a roll ofcoal tar or asphalt substrate. The specim

17、ens shall be cut at least127 mm (5 in.) in from the edge.6.2 Prepare the non-bleeding contrast surface by attaching a25 mm (1 in.) of cellophane tape to the coal tar or asphaltsubstrate piece using firm pressure. The tape shall be posi-tioned so that the outside edge is at least 25 mm (1 in.) from t

18、heedge and parallel to the edge of the substrate piece.7. Procedure7.1 Place the test panel on a smooth flat surface (such as aglass panel), with the tape side up on the left, and hold in a flatposition by weighting down the edges.7.2 Draw the paint under test down over the specimen panelin such a m

19、anner that the entire width of the tape is covered,leaving the remainder of the film to the right of the tape indirect contact with the test panels. Apply the paint under test ata thickness to ensure complete hiding.7.3 Keep the coated panel in a flat position until the film isset (after which the w

20、eights may be removed) and allow thecoated panel to dry for 48 h at 21 to 27C (70 to 80F).7.4 Immediately after completion of 48-h drying, determinethe contrast in color between the portion of the film over thetape and that portion that is in direct contact with the test panelsusing one of the follo

21、wing two procedures. The procedure usedshall be agreed upon by purchaser and seller.7.4.1 Procedure A:7.4.1.1 Measure color in accordance with Test MethodE1347 in the non-bleed reference area and in the area wherebleeding is allowed to occur. Make these measurements in atleast three positions in bot

22、h the non-bleed reference area and inthe area where bleeding is allowed to occur. Determine theratio between the CIE L* value measured for the area wherebleeding is allowed to the CIE L* value measured in thenon-bleed reference area. Calculate the average of these ratios.7.4.1.2 Alternatively, deter

23、mine the delta E in accordancewith Practice D2244 for the area where bleeding is allowed tooccur compared to the non-bleed reference area. Calculate theaverage of the delta E values.7.4.2 Procedure B:7.4.2.1 Visually compare the contrast between the non-bleed reference area and the area where bleedi
