Scope1.1 This practice provides a procedure for the

3、estimation ofthe quantity of liquid adhesive applied in a spreading or coatingoperation.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. (See adherend in Terminology D907).3.2.3 total quantity of liquid adhesive appliedthe weightof the adhesive on the test specimen as applied on the surfaceor at the glue joint, whether resulting

7、from a single spread, adouble spread, or multiple applications.4. Significance and Use4.1 For the bonding of adherends, the amount of adhesivepresent is critical and it is important to understand that thispractice does not ensure sufficient adhesive is present on theadherend surface.4.2 This practic

8、e can be used to supplement industry usessuch as that of visually checking the spread or the use ofmil-thickness gages.4.3 In laboratory and industrial operations, hand or me-chanical application of adhesives can be duplicated for costsavings using this practice.5. Apparatus5.1 The following apparat

9、us is required for this practice:5.1.1 A balance, capable of weighing the material accu-rately to the nearest 1 %, and5.1.2 A suitable instrument for measuring the linear dimen-sions of the specimens to the nearest 1 %.6. Test Specimens6.1 Select test specimens from portions of the actual mate-rial

10、to be coated or spread, or from the same lot or a similarone, having the same physical characteristics such as thickness,density, or texture.6.2 The size of the specimen may vary with the nature of thesubstrate.NOTE 1Materials of low porosity normally require larger test speci-mens than materials of

11、 high porosity.6.3 Use simple geometric shapes for the test specimens tofacilitate precise measurement of dimensions.6.4 For operations involving the coating or spreading ofsheeted stock, individual plies or lamina of the adherend, aminimum of 5 test specimens is required for determining theaverage

12、weight of liquid adhesive applied.6.5 For operations where the test specimen is in continuousform, such as roll stock of paper or fabric, use a test specimensufficient in size to reflect accurately the average spreading orcoating weight of liquid adhesive.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of

Conditioning7.1 Prior to the application of the adhesive, bring the testspecimens to equilibrium with the atmospheric conditionsprevailing under actual or contemplated operational use.8. Procedure8.1 Determine the linear dimensions of the test specimensand calcul

16、ate their areas to an accuracy of 1 %. Determine theweight of the test specimens to the nearest 1 %.8.2 Apply the adhesive to the test specimens in accordancewith the procedure recommended by the manufacturer, andreweigh the specimens immediately.8.3 Use only test specimens reflecting a normal unifo

17、rmapplication of adhesive (by visual inspection) in calculating theweight of liquid adhesive applied.9. 19、 of surfaces spread.NOTE 2For bonding operations where both contacting surfaces of thejoint are spread with adhesive, the formulas above should be used for eachsurface spread and the combined weight shall equal the total weight ofadhesive applied.10. Report10.1 Report the following information:10.1.

20、1 Complete identification of the adhesive applied,10.1.2 Method of applying adhesive,10.1.3 Complete description of the adherend test specimens(composition or type, moisture content, size, source, etc.)10.1.4 Number of test specimens used (or total area of testspecimens if from a continuous operatio

21、n) and calculatedweight of adhesive applied to each specimen,10.1.5 The average calculated weight of the liquid adhesiveapplied per thousand square feet of surface of joint area, and10.1.6 Any qualifying remarks concerning the test proce-dure.11.
