Whenconcentrates are used at 40 to 70 % concentration by volume inwater, or when prediluted glycol base engine coolants (50volume % minimum) are used without further dilution, theywill function effectively to provide protection against freezing,boil

General Requirements3.1 Engine coolant concentrates or prediluted glycol baseengine coolants shall be formulated with either ethylene glycolor propylene glycol meeting Specification E 1

31、177, water, andshall contain suitable corrosion inhibitors, dye, and a foamsuppressor.3.2 Ethylene glycol base engine coolant concentrates (TypeI) may contain a maximum of 15 % other glycols, as long asthe physical, chemical, and performance requirements of thisspecification can be met. Similarly, p

32、rediluted ethylene glycolbase coolants (Type III) may contain a maximum of 7.5 %other glycols as long as all of the requirements of thisspecification can be met.3.3 Propylene glycol base engine coolant concentrates(Type II) may contain a combined maximum of 1 % otherglycols (less than 0.5 % for pred

33、iluted propylene glycol basecoolants, Type IV) and all of the physical, chemical, andperformance requirements of this specification must be met.3.4 All engine coolant concentrates or prediluted glycolbase engine coolants shall conform to the general requirementsgiven in Table 1.3.5 Prediluted glycol

36、nt concentrate (Type I or II) diluted to 50volume % with water of at least the quality outlined in Table X1.1.3.6 When diluting engine coolant concentrates for actualservice, use a municipal (treated) water, or a low-mineralcontent well water (see Appendix X1, Table X1.1). If suchwater is not availa

37、ble, use deionized (demineralized) or dis-tilled water. This procedure will minimize the formation ofhard water scale and avoid the introduction of mineral com-ponents, such as chlorides and sulfates, that can increase thecorrosion rate of aluminum and iron.3.7 When installed in accordance with the

38、vehicle manufac-turers recommendations and those on the product label, enginecoolant concentrates or prediluted glycol base engine coolantsshall be suitable for use in a properly maintained coolingsystem (Appendix X1) in normal light-duty service for aminimum of one year without adversely affecting

39、fluid flowand heat transfer.4. Detailed Requirements4.1 Glycol base coolant concentrates and prediluted cool-ants shall conform to the physical and chemical requirementsprescribed in Table 2 depending on coolant type (see 1.2).4.2 The requirements listed in Table 2 for prediluted cool-ants (Types II

40、I and IV) are prescribed for the coolant aspackaged, without further dilution or adjustment.4.3 All coolant concentrates and prediluted coolants shallconform to the performance requirements listed in Table 3.4.4 Coolant concentrates shall be diluted for performancetesting as described in the individ

41、ual ASTM test methods.4.5 If necessary, the freezing point of prediluted coolantsshall be adjusted with deionized water before proceeding withperformance testing. The freezing point of prediluted ethyleneglycol base coolants (Type III) shall be 37C (34F) and thatof prediluted propylene glycol base c

COOLING SYSTEM MAINTENANCEX1.1 Filling the Cooling System:X1.1.1

44、 Before installing engine coolant, the cooling systemshould be inspected and necessary service work completed.X1.1.2 Cooling system fill should consist of coolant con-centrate and water or prediluted glycol base engine coolant (50volume % minimum).X1.1.3 When preparing solutions, the water should be

45、 ofsuch quality that it does not contain excessive solids, hardnesssalts, sulfates, or chlorides. In the absence of specific recom-mendations from the engine or vehicle manufacturer (see TableX1.1). Contact your local water department, the responsiblegovernment agency, or submit a water sample for a

46、nalyses, ifthere is a question on water quality.X1.1.4 The recommended coolant concentration is 40 to70 %.X1.2 Essential Cooling System Service:5X1.2.1 Check coolant concentration (freeze point). Themost accurate and preferred means of determining coolantconcentration is by the refractometer. (See X

47、2.1 and TableX2.1).X1.2.2 Check coolant level and condition. Replace coolantat service intervals recommended by the engine manufacturer,vehicle manufacturer, or designated service organization. Fol-low recommended practices.X1.2.3 Pressure test system for leaks (preferably whencold).X1.2.4 Test pres

48、sure cap and inspect radiator filler neck.X1.2.5 Inspect hoses and tighten hose connections.X1.2.6 Inspect drive belts and check for proper tension.X1.2.7 Test thermostat if the engine is running too hot or toocold. Replace with a thermostat recommended by the manu-facturer.X1.3 Premix coolant conce

49、ntrate and water before addingto the cooling system.X1.4 When preparing additions or when replacing thecoolant in the engine system, use only clean, low mineralcontent water. When the engine has cooled, carefully turn to the firstnotch to vent the system pressure, then remove.
