Significance and Use4.1 This practice is useful as an indicator of the relativesusceptibility of bituminous-coated aggregate to water, butshould not be used as
6、a measure of field performance becausesuch correlation has not been established. If loss of adhesiondue to water is indicated, testing by other procedures should beconducted to further evaluate the mixture.4.2 This practice should not be used for acceptance/rejection by owner agencies.5. 7、1 Scoop, shovel or other implement capable of removinga representative sample from a larger mass of bituminous-coated aggregate mixture.5.2 Glass Beakers, heat-resistant, 10002000 mL capacityor suitable metal containers of similar dimensions and capacity.5.3 Source of Distilled Water (at least 500 m

Sample Preparation6.1 P
10、repare an uncompacted bituminous-coated aggregatemixture following established laboratory procedures or obtaina sample of plant-produced mixture in accordance with Prac-tice D 979. The temperature of hot mixtures shall be below theboiling temperature of water, but not less than 85C (180F),before pla
11、cing in boiling water. The temperature of mixturesthat are cold mixed shall be at or above room temperaturebefore placing in boiling water.7. Procedure7.1 For each sample tested pour distilled water into a cleancontainer (as described in 5.2) such that the container isapproximately half full and hea

15、ainer isexposed to the heat source. Bring the water back to boiling andmaintain boiling for 10 min 6 15 s. Avoid excessive manipu-lation of the bituminous-coated aggregate mixture.7.3 At the end of 10 min, remove the container from the heatsource. Skim off any free bitumen from the surface of the wa
16、terto prevent recoating. Cool to room temperature, decant thewater, and empty the wet mix onto a white paper towel.NOTE 2For comparison, a similar amount of fresh bituminous-coatedaggregate mixture should be placed into a second container, covered withunheated distilled water for 10 min, the water d
17、ecanted and the mixtureemptied onto a white paper towel.7.4 Visually observe the aggregate (coarse and fine) forretained bitumen coating.Any thin, brownish, translucent areasare to be considered fully coated. Visual observations shall bemade immediately after the sample is placed on the white papert
18、owel (Note 3). Examination of the sample under a light andwith low magnification may aid in the visual observation ofretained coating.NOTE 3Additional information can be obtained by repeating thevisual observation 24 h after boiling when the sample has dried and theeffects of moisture on the coating
19、 appearance of the sample have beeneliminated.8.
