Scope*1.1 This specification covers requ
3、irements for extruded(cast or blown) and compression-molded sheeting made fromlow-, medium- and high-density polyethylenes and copolymersin thickness of 0.25 mm (0.010 in.) and greater. Depending onthe functional requirements, sheeting conforming to this speci-fication is used in applications such a
4、s chemical tank linings,spacers in electrical equipment, thermoforming into such itemsas trays, pallets, and shipping containers, and as machine-shopstock.1.2 Polyethylene materials, being thermoplastics, are repro-cessable and recyclable (see Guides D 5033 and D 7209). Thisspecification allows for

17、).6. Materials and Manufacture6.1 MaterialsThe sheeting shall be manufactured frompolyethylene thermoplastic material of the special grade speci-fied in 5.1.2. The supplier shall furnish, for the material used,data for the classification properties.6.2 ManufactureSheeting shall be formed by extrusio
18、nand roll polishing, or compression.7. Detail Requirements7.1 FormThe sheeting shall be furnished flat or in rolls inthe dimensions specified.7.2 Tensile Stress at Yield and Nominal Strain at BreakSheeting shall conform to the values shown for the appropriatecell classification as found in Specifica
19、tion D 4976.7.3 ShrinkageThe sheeting, when tested as specified in11.3, shall conform to the requirements as determined betweenthe user and the supplier.7.4 Warpage and TwistThe sheeting, when tested asspecified in 11.4, shall conform to the requirements as deter-mined between the user and the suppl
20、ier.7.5 DimensionsSheeting shall be supplied in the width,length (or weight), and thickness as specified between the userand the supplier, except that is permissible for a maximum of4 % of the sheet in a shipment to be trimmed 55-mm (2-in.)undersize or half-size. Such trimmed sheet shall be packedse
21、parately from full-sized sheet. The thickness shall be testedin accordance with 11.5. Thickness tolerances are shown inTable 1.7.6 Length or Weight and Diameter of RollsSheeting inrolls shall be supplied with either the length or weightspecified, except that one roll in a shipment shall be permitted
22、to have the lesser length or weight required to make the totallength or weight of the shipment equal to the quantity ordered.Specify the diameter of the roll.7.7 ColorThe sheeting shall be of the color specified bythe user.7.8 GradeThe sheeting shall be of the grade specified bythe user.7.9 Workmans
23、hipThe sheeting shall have a smooth finishand shall be free of cracks, blisters, bubbles, discolorations,craze, surface scratches that form definite indentations, andother defects that could affect appearance or serviceability.7.9.1 Dimensional DefectsThe sheeting shall show noneof the defects descr
24、ibed in Table 2.7.9.2 Defects in Color, Appearance, and WorkmanshipThe sheeting shall show none of the defects described in Table3.8. Sampling8.1 The materials shall be sampled in accordance with thesampling procedure prescribed in Practice D 1898. Adequatestatistical sampling shall be considered an
25、 acceptable alterna-tive. A lot of material shall be considered as a unit ofmanufacture as prepared for shipment, and shall be permittedto consist of a blend of two or more production runs or batches.9. Testing9.1 Test the sheeting for the applicable characteristics listedin 7.2, 7.3, and 7.4 and Ta
26、ble 1 and Table 2 in accordance withthe test methods specified herein, for each lot submitted forinspection.10. Conditioning10.1 Condition the test specimens at 23 6 2C (73.4 63.6F) for not less than 40 h prior to test in accordance withSpecification D 4976 or as otherwise specified by agreement.In
27、cases of disagreement, the tolerances shall be 61C(61.8F).10.2 In addition, for films containing hydrophilic fillers,co-monomers, pigments or other modifiers, conditioning andtesting shall be done at 50 6 10 % relative humidity. In casesof disagreement, the tolerance shall be 65 % relative humidity.

In extruded sheet, properties are dependenton the sampling direction; therefore, test specimens shall be cutand tested in the extrusion direction or in both the extrusionand tra
33、nsverse directions if agreed upon between the supplierand the user.11.3 ShrinkageTest in accordance with Test MethodD 1204, using a minimum oven time of 30 min, and an oventemperature of 130 6 2C (266 6 3.6F) for Group 1 and 2,Classes 1 and 2 Polyethylene (Specification D 4976) and of140 6 2C (284 6
34、 3.6F) for Group 2, Classes 3 and 4Polyethylene (Specification D 4976). If previous tests on thesame grade and nominal thickness of sheeting have shown thatthe use of talc or paper is unnecessary to provide freeshrinkage, these refinements can be omitted.11.4 Warpage and TwistDetermine warpage or tw
35、ist usingtwo sheets tested in accordance with Method 6051 of Fed. Std.No. 406A except for the following: a straightedge 1-m (36-in.)long shall be used. Move the straightedge over the sheet androtate it along the sheet length about an axis perpendicular tothe plane of the sheet without permitting an
36、end of thestraightedge to extend beyond the edge of the sheet. Measureand report the maximum distance from the sheet to thestraightedge. Make the measurement with the sheet lying withits surface of maximum convexity in contact with a horizontalflat surface. The straightedge shall be light in weight

40、ment is influencedby the characteristics of the material and needs to be consid-ered by the user of this specification.11.5.2 ApparatusAn instrument as described in TestMethod D 5947 that is suitable for the material and specimengeometry being tested.11.5.3 Test SpecimensPrepare test specimens, appr
41、oxi-mately 5 by 5 cm (2 by 2 in.) in area, taken randomly across thewidth of the roll. Take at least one set of test specimens fromeach roll being tested. In the case of sheet stock, a statisticallyvalid sampling plan shall be used. Five specimens are recom-mended for sheeting of widths of five feet
42、 or less and tenspecimens are recommended for sheeting greater than five feetin width.NOTE 2Care must be taken in choosing the size of the specimen inrelation to the anvil to assure that the weight of the specimen overhangingthe anvil does not overcome the weight applied to the presser foot, whichwi
43、ll result in erroneous readings. If it is necessary to use a largerspecimen, a heavier weight should be used.11.5.4 ProcedureA procedure, suitable for the materialand specimen geometry being tested, as described in TestMethod D 5947 shall be used. The surfaces of the anvil, thepresser foot spindle,
44、and the specimens shall be clean and dry.Take one measurement on each specimen. Average the mea-surements of all the specimens of a sample to obtain thethickness of the sample.12. Certification and Inspection12.1 Certification and lot acceptance of the material shall beagreed upon between the suppli
45、er and the user, or as a part ofthe purchase contract.12.2 Periodic check inspection shall consist of the testsagreed upon between the supplier and the user.12.3 A report of the test results shall be furnished at afrequency agreed upon between the supplier and the user whenspecified in a purchase or
