Scope1.1 This specification covers crushed steel slag coarse andfine aggregates suitable for use in bituminous paving mixtures.1.2 Steel sl

3、ag coarse and fine aggregates are currently beingused entirely (Note 1) or combined with other mineralaggregates, such as those covered in Specification D692 orD1073, to produce paving mixtures similar to those describedin Specification D3515 or D4215.NOTE 1When 100 % of the coarse aggregate in a bi

4、tuminous mixtureis steel slag, the amount of steel slag fines in that mixture may be limitedto prevent bulking.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. Ordering Information4.1 Orders for the material under this specification shallinclude the following information:4.1.1

17、The name of material (steel slag coarse aggregateand/or steel slag fine aggregate).4.1.2 The specification designation and year of issue.4.1.3 The grading of the aggregate to be furnished, byreference to a size number in Classification D448 for coarseaggregate, grading number in Specification D1073

18、for fineaggregate, or other grading as specified by the purchaser.4.1.4 The quantity required.4.1.5 For coarse aggregate, whether the intended use is forconventional mixtures or open-graded friction course mixtures(see 6.1.2), and whether for surface courses or base courses(see 6.1.3).4.1.6 For sulf

19、ate soundness tests, which salt is to be used inTest Method C88 and whether soundness requirements areapplicable for the fine aggregate.4.1.7 Any special requirements.5. General Characteristics5.1 The coarse and fine aggregates shall consist of hard,tough, durable pieces of steel slag as defined in

20、3.1.1. Theaggregates shall be processed, as necessary to meet therequirements of this specification, by crushing or screening, orboth, and magnetic separation for the removal of metallics. Atthe time of delivery, the aggregates shall not contain injuriousamounts of foreign materials such as clay, lo

21、am, wood, trampmetal, unhydrated lime, or other deleterious materials.6. Physical Requirements6.1 Coarse Aggregate:6.1.1 GradingThe coarse aggregate grading shall conformto the requirements of Classification D448 for the size numberdesignated, or to another grading as stated in the order (Note3).NOT

22、E 3The coarse aggregate grading to be furnished is dependentupon the desired composition of the paving mixture, and whether thegrading to be used in the mixture is achieved with or without blending.Other coarse aggregate gradings may be used provided that the combinedaggregates and filler, when used

23、, will produce a paving mixture thatprovides the desired characteristics.6.1.1.1 The size to be used is dependent upon the desiredcomposition of the paving mixture, and the required size orsizes either before or after blending as specified.6.1.2 Crushed Pieces in AggregateOrders for materialunder th

24、is specification shall state the appropriate requirementsfor percentage of crushed pieces (Test Method D5821).6.1.2.1 Conventional mixtures, not less than 40 % by mass,of the pieces retained on the 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve shall haveat least one fractured face (Notes 4 and 5).6.1.2.2 Open graded fricti

25、on course mixtures, of the aggre-gate pieces retained on the 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve, not less than90 % by mass, shall have one or more fractured faces and 75 %by mass, two or more fractured faces.NOTE 4Attention is called to the distinction between conventional(dense mixtures or open mixtures) and op

26、en-graded friction coursemixtures in Specification D3515.NOTE 5Some sources of aggregate contain angular particles that willperform similarly to a mechanically crushed particle. Where laboratorytests or service records indicate this to be true, such angular particles maybe considered as crushed.6.1.

27、3 Polishing CharacteristicsThe coarse aggregates, orthe coarsest fraction of the aggregate for use in surface coursemixtures, shall be of a type known to possess adequateresistance to polishing action of the anticipated traffic (Note 6).NOTE 6No ASTM standard has been recognized to be capable ofdefi

28、ning adequate resistance to the polishing action of specific trafficconditions. Test Method D3319 has been found useful in evaluating therelative polish resistance between samples of different aggregates ormixtures containing different aggregates.6.1.4 SoundnessThe coarse aggregate, when subjected t

29、ofive cycles of the soundness test (see Test Method C88), shallhave a mass loss not greater than 12 % when sodium sulfate isused or 18 % when magnesium sulfate is used. If the salt is notdesignated by the purchaser, the aggregate shall be acceptableif it meets the indicated limit for either salt use

30、d.6.1.5 DegradationAggregate subjected to testing in accor-dance with Test Method C131 shall have a loss not greater than40 % for surface courses or 50 % for base courses.6.2 Fine Aggregate:6.2.1 The fine aggregate grading shall conform to therequirements of Specification D1073 for the size numberde

31、signated, or to another grading as designated in the order(Note 7).NOTE 7The fine aggregate grading to be furnished is dependent uponthe desired composition of the paving mixture, and whether the grading tobe used in the mixture is achieved with or without blending. Other fineaggregate gradings may

32、be used provided that the combined aggregatesand filler, when used, will produce a paving mixture that provides thedesired characteristics.6.2.2 The size to be used is dependent upon the desiredcomposition of the paving mixture, and the required size orsizes either before or after blending as specif

33、ied.6.2.3 Grading VariabilityFor continuing shipments of fineaggregate from a given source, the fineness modulus shall notvary more than 0.25 from the base fineness modulus (Note 8).The base fineness modulus shall be that value that is typical ofthe source. The base fineness modulus shall not be cha

34、ngedexcept when approved by the purchaser.6.2.3.1 The base fineness modulus shall be determined fromprevious tests, or if no previous tests exist, from the average ofthe fineness modulus values for the first ten samples (or allpreceding samples if less than ten) on the order.NOTE 8Base fineness modu

35、lus of the fine aggregate has a greatinfluence on proportioning of bituminous mixtures; therefore, largeD5106 132changes in its value may make adjustments in the mixture necessary.6.2.4 Plasticity index of the fine aggregate fraction smallerthan the 425m (No. 40) sieve shall not exceed 4.0 (TestMeth

36、od D4318).6.3 General Requirements:6.3.1 ExpansionAggregates that contain components sub-ject to hydration, such as free-lime (CaO), shall be obtainedfrom sources approved by the purchaser on the basis of eithersatisfactory performance record, aging, or other treatmentknown to reduce potential expan

37、sion to a satisfactory level(Note 9).NOTE 9Test Method D4792 is used to evaluate the potential forexpansion of dense graded materials only.6.3.2 Environmental StabilityAggregates shall be evalu-ated for environmental considerations (air quality, waterquality, and storage) using the required local, s

38、tate, and federaltest methods in effect at the time of use.6.3.2.1 The aggregate shall meet all applicable local, state,and federal environmental requirements in effect at the time ofuse.6.3.2.2 Aggregates that exhibit a potential for producingleachates shall be tested using the Toxicity Characteris

39、ticLeaching Procedure (EPA Method SW846 1311) or appropri-ate test method as approved by the purchaser. Results shallindicate that all areas tested (metals, volatiles, semi-volatiles,and organics) are below regulatory limits.6.3.3 Special RequirementsEvaluation will be required forthe following item

40、s (but not exclusive of) when specified bythe purchaser: the potential for stripping (Test Method D4867/D4867M) and friable particles (Test Method C142).7. 43、MENTSThe following supplementary requirement shall apply only when specified by the purchaser in thecontract or order.S1. Sulfate SoundnessThe fine aggregate, when subjectedto five cycles of the soundness test in accordance with TestMethod C88, shall have a weighted loss of not greater than15 % when

44、 sodium sulfate is used or 20 % when magnesiumsulfate is used. If the salt used is not stated by the purchaser, thefine aggregate shall be acceptable if it meets the requirementwhen tested with either salt.ASTM International takes no position respecting the validity of any patent rights asserted in
