Summary of Practice4.1 The specimen is secured to a backing sheet that ismounted inside the rotatable drum with the pile surfaceex
9、posed. A metal hexapod, with six polyurethane studs, rollsrandomly on the pile surface inside the rotating drum for aspecified number of revolutions.5. Significance and Use5.1 This equipment may be used to bring about the changesin appearance and texture on the surface of pile floor coveringcaused b

Apparatus, Materials, and Reagent6.1 Hexapod Tumble Tester6.1.1 DrumConstructed of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) andcapped by a lid that is secured by a metal plate and wing nut.The drum base and lid have a locating groove to hold thespecimen backing sheet flat to the inner wall of
11、 the drum. Thedrum dimensions are:Internal Diameter 305 6 1mm (126 0.01 in.)Wall Thickness 8 mm approx. (0.3 in.approx.)Internal Depth 200 6 1mm (7.96 0.01 in.)6.1.2 Driving System, which cradles the drum on rollers andkeeps the axis of the drum level, and rotates at 3.6 6 0.2 rad/s(35 6 2 rpm). The
12、 driving direction reverses every 15 min withapproximately one-minute stationery time intervals.6.1.3 Hexapod TumblerCompromised of a mild steel 506 1 mm (1.97 6 0.04 in.) cube with 25-mm (1-in.) thick plateswelded to each side. The outside corners are welded such thatwhen the studs are fitted and t

18、device should be used.6.5 Cleaning Frame, a rectangular frame approx.1000 3 300 mm (40 3 12 in.) with a central rectangularaperture approx. 940 3 200 mm (37 3 8 in) to receive the testspecimen, of material similar construction to the test specimenand mounted on a rigid backing sheet.6.6 SolventUse o
19、nly ethyl alcohol, or isopropylalcohol,technical grade.7. Preparation of Specimen7.1 Marking SpecimenBefore cutting out the test speci-men, mark on the backing the direction of manufacture withthe head of the arrow pointing in the same direction as the layof the pile.7.2 Size of SpecimenCut the spec
20、imen approx. 940 3 200mm (37 3 8 in.) with the long dimension parallel to thelengthwise direction of the pile yarn floor covering. Take nospecimen within 100 mm (4.0 in.) of the trimmed selvedge.Alternatively, up to four smaller specimens of similar thicknessmay be tested together, although if this
21、is done, the effect offiber or finish must be considered. If this is the case, cut thespecimen to allow for a 5-mm (0.2-in.) gap between eachspecimen, and ensure that the pile lay is in the same direction.7.3 Cleaning of SpecimenPrior to testing, vacuum thespecimen to remove any loose tufts or fiber
22、s.7.4 Specimen AttachmentAttach the double-sided adhe-sive tape along each side and across the end of the specimenbacking sheet leaving 5 mm (0.2 in.) clear at each edge,pressing down firmly to ensure adhesion. If testing multiplespecimens, attach an additional strip tape at each cross junc-tion. Mo
23、unt the specimen pile surface uppermost, allowing a 5mm (0.2 in.) gap at the end and between 5 to 10 mm (0.2 to 0.4in.) between specimens to allow space for the pile when thebacking sheet is curved to fit the drum.8. Conditioning8.1 Bring the specimen to moisture equilibrium for testingin the standa
24、rd atmosphere for testing textiles approachingequilibrium from the dry side without the use of heat. Deter-mine that moisture equilibrium for testing has been attained asdirected in Practice D 1776.9. Procedure9.1 Perform this practice on a specimen prepared as de-scribed in Section 8, maintaining t
25、he Hexapod Tumble DrumTester in the standard atmosphere for testing textiles.9.2 Wipe the hexapod tumbler and the inside of the drumwith a clean lint free tissue and one of the recommendedsolvents.9.3 Inspect the studs on the hexapod tumbler for signs ofwear or damage. Replace the studs when severe
26、wear isapparent. Place the hexapod tumbler with new studs on the pilesurface drum tester and allow to tumble for a minimum of 4 hprior to regular testing.9.4 Ensure that the specimen lies smoothly around theinternal circumference when the backing sheet is curved to fitthe drum and that it is firmly
27、held in place by the locatinggrooves. If necessary, adjust the specimen length.9.5 Place the hexapod tumbler in the drum on the specimensurface.9.6 Secure the lid to the drum and position the drum on therollers of the drive mechanism. Ensure that the drum is level.9.7 Set the revolution counter for
28、2,000 revolutions. Whenthe machine stops, remove the mounted specimen and place inthe central aperture of the cleaning frame.9.8 Using the upright vacuum cleaner, make four forwardand four backward passes along the length of the mountedspecimen ensuring all the area is covered and the final pass isi
29、n the lay of the pile.9.9 Return the mounted specimen to the drum and repeat9.4-9.8 until the required number has been completed.10. Report10.1 State that the tester was operated as directed in PracticeD 5252.10.2 Report the following information:10.2.1 The number of revolutions.10.2.2 The type of v
