9、 Surfaces83. Significance and Use3.1 Water-blast cleaning with, (SSPC-TR2/NACE 6C 198)or without, (SSPC-SP 12/Nace No. 5) abrasive, results in flashrusting under some environmental conditions. Inhibitors areused to prevent flash rusting while drying and before coatingapplication. The inhibitor or re

10、action products of the inhibitoron the substrate becomes part of the coating systems. Coatingperformance may be influenced by the inhibitor. Solublecontaminants or unreacted inhibitors left on the surface underthe coating may cause premature failure. This practice includesa comparison of coating per

11、formance with and without inhibi-tors using various laboratory tests to simulate a range ofconditions such as high moisture, marine atmospheric or waterimmersion.3.2 The user or specifier must determine the specific testmethods to be used and exposure conditions. Some testmethods referenced may not

12、be applicable to all types ofcoatings.4. Specimen Preparation4.1 Carbon steel samples of an appropriate size, in accor-dance with Specification A 36/A36M for the specified testmethod shall be white metal blast-cleaned in accordance withSSPC-SP 5 and measure profile in accordance with TestMethods D 4

17、recommended concentra-tion 3 522_AFor each of the test and topcoat times, one panel shall be designated ascontrol and shall receive no exposure.4.2 Test panels will be treated with the inhibitor by immers-ing the dry abrasive-blasted panel in a water solution, at 75 610F (24 6 5.5C), of the inhibito

18、r at the concentrationrecommended by the inhibitor manufacturer and at five timesthis concentration (five times to simulate excessive concentra-tion above that recommended by the inhibitor manufacturer).Use deionized water in accordance with Specification D 1193.Deionized water, Type II Reagent Grad

19、e, is used to minimizetest variables. Tap water is typically used in the field and maycontain varying amounts of salts.4.3 Remove panel after 1 or 2 min immersion in theinhibitor solution and hang in a vertical position allowing theinhibited water solution to drain and dry at 75 6 10F (24 65.5C). If

20、 required by the inhibitor manufacturer, rinse panelswith deionized water to remove excess inhibitor or in accor-dance with the manufacturers recommendations (see alsoSpecification D 1193). Care should be taken not to allow thewater/inhibitor solutions to puddle since this may cause a highconcentrat

21、ion of inhibitor, after evaporation.4.4 After completely drying and prior to any appearance offlash rusting, apply the first coat of the coating system. Applycoating within 6 to8htoonesetofcontrol and exposure testspecimens and apply coating to another set of control andexposure test specimens withi

22、n 48 to 56 h. Select shorter timeswhen inhibitor shows flash rusting before either of these timeperiods.4.5 Record relative humidity range and drying time aftertreatment and before coating. Apply remaining coats as rec-ommended by the coating manufacturer.5. Procedure5.1 Select as a minimum, one of

23、the tests that best simulatesthe intended service condition of the coating system (see Table1): Specification B117, Practice D 2247, and NACE TM-01-74 Method B. Other tests on weathering, such as PracticeD 822, or cyclic testing, elevated temperatures, chemicalimmersion, radiation or design basic ac

24、cident (DBA) may alsobe used to examine inhibitors with a coating for specificexposure conditions.5.2 Use a different time schedule for comparison testingdepending on the generic coating being tested with the inhibi-tor. Schedule more frequent examination schedules in order tomore accurately identif

25、y time when changes in coating condi-tions occur.5.3 Conduct two adhesion tests in accordance with TestMethods D 4541 or D 3359, Test Method B, elcometer or tapetest procedures at each time period on both the control andexposure test samples.9Repair adhesion test areas beforecontinuing the test.6. 26、eport6.1 Report blistering and scribe corrosion as appropriate forthe test method and report conditions of test samples inaccordance with Test Methods D 714 and D 1654 at each testtime. Report adhesion test values and where failure occurredfor each test condition and time. Report sample preparationc
