、Designation: D 5570 94 (Reapproved 2005)Standard Test Method forWater Resistance of Tape and Adhesives Used as BoxClosure1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 5570; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, t

、he year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers a procedure to determine thewater resistance of an adhesive or tape as measured by

、 theamount of tape or adhesive dissolved or dispersed in water.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. The inch-pound units given in parentheses are forinformation only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its u

、mining the percent of adhesive that is dissolved ordispersed.5. Significance and Use5.1 When a box becomes wet, the performance of the boxand its closure are reduced. It is desirable to have box closuremethods that retain an ability to keep the box closed when wet.Sealing or reinforcing methods some

、times are useful to im-prove performance of wet boxes and closures. Water resistanceis sometimes a regulatory or contractual requirement.5.2 A test result indicating that a box closure tape oradhesive is soluble or dispersible in water is an indication thatits function will be significantly impaired

、 when wet. A testresult that does not indicate solubility or dispersibility does notnecessarily ensure that the bonding ability will be satisfactorywhen wet or that the performance of the box closure will besatisfactory when wet. Distilled ordeionized water shall be used for referee purposes.6.7 Dispensing System, as required, when adhesives are tobe tested.6.8 Specimen Marking Device, such as a pencil or a penwith water resistant ink.6.9

、 Paper or Paperboard, when adhesives are to be tested, which has the ability to remain intact for at least 24 h of waterimmersion. The approximate size shall be 250 3 250 mm(10 3 10 in.).7. Test Specimens7.1 Samples of tape and adhesives shall be representative ofthe items under investigation.NOTE 1W

、ater resistance is a property that is relatively constant for agiven formulation of tape and adhesive. This type of testing is usuallyconducted only for design qualification or first article of manufacture, noton a periodic or lot-by-lot basis.8. Procedures8.1 Procedure ATape:8.1.1 Obtain three samp

、les of tape, each with an approxi-mate area of 7500 mm2(12 in.2). Dry each specimen in an ovenat 105 6 5C (221 6 9F) for 2 h. Weigh each specimen to thenearest milligram immediately after removal from the oven;weighing procedures in Practice D 644 are recommended forreferee purposes. Place specimens

、 in a container with at least 1L of water at 23 6 2C (73.4 6 4F). Hold specimens underwater by a stainless steel screen or by other means that allowcirculation of water to all surfaces of the specimens but will notdisrupt the adhesive surface. Keep specimens under water at 236 2C (73.4 6 4F) for 25
