1、Designation: D 5624 02 (Reapproved 2007)Standard Test Method forDetermining the Transverse-Aggregate Spread Rate forSurface Treatment Applications1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 5624; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, i

2、n the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method details the procedure for determiningthe aggregate spread rates

3、in approximately 0.33-m (1-ft)transverse increments.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. The inch-pound units shown in parentheses are forinformation only.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is there

Summary of Test Method3.1 The transverse-aggregate spread rate is determined bythe use of a series of rubber pads laid side by side width-wiseacross the pavem

6、ent. The chip spreader is then allowed toproceed across the rubber mats with the gates open allowingthe aggregate to drop onto the mats. Aggregate collected oneach of the mats is removed and weighed. The transverse-aggregate distribution then is calculated, and the aggregatespreader adjusted if desi

Significance and Use4.1 The results from this test method are used to calibrateaggregate spreaders and verify the uniformity of distributiontransversely prior to construction of the surface treatment bydete

8、rmining the average quantity of aggregate spread per unitarea.4.2 The test method is useful for quality control duringconstruction to monitor the spread rate.4.3 The samples obtained during construction by this testmethod are useful for determination of moisture content andgrading when such informat

Thisbalance (or scale) shall be readable and accurate to1gifonlythe transverse spread rate is being determined; an accuracy of0.1 g is needed if moisture content i

Allbalances, or scales, shall meet the requirement set forth inMethod E 898 for top loading, direct-reading laboratory scalesand balances.5.2 ContainersContainers, sufficient in number for thenumber of samples to be taken, and of a sufficient size to holdthe contents of one rubbe

If moisture content is to bedetermined, then the container shall be sealable.5.3 Rubber MatsRubber mats shall have grooves ofsufficient depth to prevent aggregate from rolling and slippingwhen the chips are spread. The mats shall be cut in widthsappropriate for the gate openings of the equipm

12、ent beingadjusted. Widths of 0.305 m (1 ft) have been commonly used. The length of the mats shall be a minimum of 0.9144 m (3 ft).Mats shall be cut so that the grooves are perpendicular to the0.9144 m (3 ft) side.NOTE 1Rubber floor mats conforming to these specifications areavailable at local hardwar

16、ermination of Transverse Spread Rate6.1 Place the rubber mats side by side width-wise on thepavement with the grooves perpendicular to the centerline (Fig.1). The number of rubber mats to be used shall be equal to thewidth of aggregate distribution to be monitored.6.2 Tare one container for each mat

17、 to be used. If thecontainer has a lid, tare the container with the lid. Designatethis mass as B.6.3 Drive the aggregate spreader over the pads with thegates open to allow the aggregate to fall onto the rubber mats.Open the gates a minimum of 2.44 m (8 ft) before reaching therubber mats. This allows

18、 time for the transverse-aggregatedistribution to stabilize.6.4 The aggregate spreader shall be operated in the mannerintended for use during construction. Speed and gear settingsshall be representative of anticipated construction use.6.5 After the aggregate spreader has passed over the rubbermats,

19、carefully brush from the edges toward the center of eachrubber mat. Fold each mat lengthwise into a 0.914-m (3-ft)long funnel. Pour the aggregate into a tared, and labeledcontainer. Repeat this procedure until the aggregate from eachof the mats has been placed in individual containers.6.6 Determine

20、the mass of each container of aggregate.Designate this mass as A.7. Moisture Content of Aggregate (Optional)7.1 When the moisture content of the aggregate at the timeof construction is required, obtain the samples using the stepsin 6.1 through 6.6. Place samples for moisture content deter-mination i

21、n a sealed container within 5 min of spreading theaggregate.7.2 Determine the mass of each sealed container of moistaggregate within4hofobtaining the sample. Subtract the massof the container to determine the mass of the moist aggregate.7.3 Determine the moisture content of the aggregate inaccordanc

Mix aggregate through riffle splitter at leasttwice to ensure adequate mixing.8.2 Oven dry to a constant mass.8.3 Perform sieve analysis according to Test Method C 13

23、6.9. Calculation9.1 (SI Units) The aggregate spread rate is determined bythe following:S 5C A 2 B!LW(1)where:A = mass of aggregate and container, g,B = mass of container, g,L = length of mat, mm,S = aggregate spread rate in kg/m2,W = width of mat, mm, andC = 1000, a constant for unit conversion.9.2

24、(Inch-Pound Units) The aggregate spread rate is deter-mined by the following:S 5 CA 2 BLW!9453.6(2)where:A = mass of aggregate and container, g,B = mass of container, g,L = length of mat, ft,S = aggregate spread rate in lbs/yd2,W = width of mat, ft, andC = 0.01984, a constant for inch-pound unit con

Precision and Bias11.1 Preliminary testing indicates that the reproducibility(within-laboratory) standard deviation for this test is 0.47kg/m2(0.86 lbs/yd2). Because test results are dependent uponindividual pieces of equipment,

27、local requirements for opera-tion of equipment, equipment speed, as well as the fact thatthere is no means of providing a standard material for testing,no estimate of reproducibility (between-laboratory standarddeviation) can be developed. This precision statement is onlyfor the purposes of defining

28、 the ability of one technician tomeasure the transverse spread rate for any given set of testingconditions.NOTE 2Precision estimated from data reported in “Evaluation of 1989Chip Seal Test Sections on US95A Between Wabuska and Yerington,Nevada”, University of Nevada, Reno report to Nevada Department

29、 ofTransportation, June, 1991.11.2 Preliminary testing also suggests that standard devia-tions will vary depending on whether pre-wet or pre-coatedaggregate is used. However, this has not been proven and moreresearch is being done on this subject.11.3 BiasSince there is no accepted reference materia
